If your goal in life is "being happy," you don't actually have a goal. Nobody wakes up and goes looking for happiness like it's their phone or their keys. Lazarillo de Tormes wasn't chasing happiness, he was trying not to starve. Happiness is what comes after you get the necessary stuff done, it's not something you hunt for.

Same with people "searching for meaning." They fill their lives with abstract garbage and end up emptier than before.

This obsession is just nihilism. People spend all day online doing nothing and go to bed just as empty as they woke up. Looking for happiness on the internet is like looking for it by whipping yourself. Just log off more and you'll be happier.
>>
So what are you doing here champ?
>>
>>25564292
Same as you. That's why I know it doesn't work.
>>
>Felicity and pain always alternate. [The muse] serves as a focus and challenge. She gives happiness. Here I use the English language precisely—hap: happening. She provides hap; provides happening.
>>
>>25564270
People who think they should be happy all the time are the least equipped to deal with being sad. I try not to get caught up too far in either direction because neither are true.
>>
>>25564315
The trick is learning to be happy when things are just okay.
>>
>>25564270
I'm just looking to pass the time.
>>
>>25564270
It is not necessarily vacuous to say you're looking for happiness because happiness is one of the few things you can seek that isn't just the means to another end. You're trying to get money for security, you're trying to get security to make opportunities for your family, you want opportunities for your family because you want to meaningfully deny the entropy inherent in the world, etc. Why do you want happiness though? I don't mean biologically what is the mechanism, I mean it in the same way I meant these other things. What is the reasoning?

It's easier in Greek where there are different words for happiness, just like there are for love. If I say I want happiness in English but when I say it you know I mean something more like the Greek eudaimonia it's obviously not nihilism.

What you're saying is that seeking nothing is nihilism, because the kind of happiness you're talking about is nothing.

I had this weird eureka moment the other day. Part of me really wanted to make a video game, because I just thought it would be cool, but every time I sat down to make one I just got profoundly restless and understimulated and went back to browsing Twitter and Youtube a few hours in. It was a pretty silly problem at first, but I took it more seriously when I discovered that I physically could not get past this barrier. But I had to know whether or not I could make a video game, so I persisted.

What I discovered, is that one specific mental block prevented me from making a game. It was that I didn't consider the act of game development to be a significant or meaningful activity. What I wanted was the finished game -- I had no interest in art, programming, writing, scripting, debugging, or any of that. But on a whim I told myself, "What would happen if you decided that game development does matter? What if you decide that all this is meaningful?" And to do this, I thought about how I love learning, and that while game development might not be a traditional field of study, by putting myself through this, I will learn something that a textbook can't teach you. What that something is, is unclear, but I'm now making a lot of progress.

I think the West has conned itself into believing that it can have an ideology-free culture. We killed religion and immediately replaced it with hedonism. What weighed me down there, was simply the crippling weight of hedonist ideology. If the people don't orient their lives around God, they still have to orient it around something. If you don't give them an answer, they'll just cling onto the first thing they find

happiness in intrinsic contentment i.e. not contingent on external factors. A wise man is happy in slavery.

>DUDE! SIXES!
When there's one 6 I'm like, ok that's a number. Nothing to worry about.
When there's two 6s I'm getting uncomfortable, but it's all in my head, that's on me.
When that third 6 drops? And right after the other two? I know something's wrong. Evil emanates from these numbers and I call on Jesus who comforts me, but afterwards, for a while I feel the stain of these three numbers in a row.

Sounds like they were looking for happiness incorrectly

Pleasure is the core point of life. If one were to seek maximal pleasure they would optimize their ability to attain it, which would lead to
• close friendships / alliances (teamwork makes the dream work)
• living heathily
• optimizing for power
• seeking a higher sphere of sentience

Are you the guy from the zoomer doomer thread or are more people thinking the same thing? What kind of game are you making

I think the eye of providence is a good symbol for a lot of things growth-related, like learning a new skill. The menial process of building a perfect structure (pyramid) at some point ascends. You just have to force it, and you'll learn to love it

>Are you the guy from the zoomer doomer thread or are more people thinking the same thing?
Yep
>What kind of game are you making
It's a short little shooting game where you try to clear all the enemies on each screen in a small amount of time. It doesn't look impressive now, but I hope to go all out with "game-feel" and pixel art eventually

> The menial process of building a perfect structure (pyramid) at some point ascends. You just have to force it, and you'll learn to love it
Jung's union of opposites has assisted me quite a lot lately. If you tell someone you want to make a game, but you feel like you *can't* make a game, then they'll say something smarmy like, "Oh well it seems like you don't really want to, because if you did then you'd be making one". But both of you are right. You want to make a game, but you also don't want to at the same time. So just affirm both poles. Just work on a game for a bit each day, and then stop whenever you feel like it.

And you can do this with whatever you want. If part of you wants to learn Russian - screw it. Just start today. Pick up the book and start learning words. It's a really powerful cure to being a manchild. The manchild spends his entire life trying to devise an abstraction compromise to all his desires in his head. A clever person just feels something and then acts on it. Your brain will handle the rest

Terry Davis regarding work and the secret to life is: "You know the secret? The difference between heaven and hell is, like, doing your work. You feel really shitty if you don't do your work. If you do your work, it's fuckin' awesome."

How much are you using AI?
I think there is an opportunity in making a high quality mod.
Starfield is a good example of a very high quality game with a laughably low quality writing. Everything seems like it's written for children (the corporation questline is a great example).
It seems like R* and Bethesda make this amazing, massive budget worlds and give it the most retarded characters, where everyone is meant to be a slapstick idiot

To make a high quality mod, I think the hard part (other than marketing etc) is the writing. I'm definitely interested in collaborating with somone if you're interested
>>
>>25567778
You're ESL, right? No offense but that will pose some challenges for writing, you'll need an editor at minimum. I'm not going to be doing any writing for a long time on my project, so I'd decline desu. But you should ask writing general and the adgd thread on /bant/ if they want to collab. Post a sample of your writing too in your post
>>
>>25567785
Nigga I am not ESL. Is it because is I said
>It seems like R* and Bethesda make **this** amazing, massive budget worlds and give it the most retarded characters

I'm not a writer, I'm a software developer though i have no game dev expierence (nor do I need it with AI!)
>>
>>25567788
So what you saying is you're a glorified monitor watcher.
>>
>>25567788
Well your writing is really bad to be honest, so if you want to become a writer I'd start by fixing that up.
>>
>>25567792
I'm a slave at the prompt factory. But I taught myself to code / found a way into the job market pre-AI
>>
>>25567793
And your game looks like complete dogshit despite, I would think, being able to prompt a dramatically better one in seconds. I wasn't judging you for it

I saw a science fiction competition with a $10k prize earlier this year. An idea was to read the entries and find someone from that and pay them, though I never did it. I don't have to be a writer. I was more looking for someone to plan it with / bounce ideas off of and clearly you're not it
>>
>>25567797
Based and grim
>>
>>25567803
Kek, chill out dude. I wasn't trying to be mean, I actually thought you were an ESL. If you do plan on writing in the future you should just get someone to proof/edit your stuff is all.

Pursuit of pleasure is the most fundamental instinct. Something we have as soon as we're born

The funny thing is you're the point you're trying to make is already taking it as an axiom
>Just log off more and you'll be happier.
You're basically saying people have unable to correctly pursue happiness, and all of their pursuits lead to less happiness than if they were to just touch grass and not try at all

>If the people don't orient their lives around God, they still have to orient it around something
I am still looking for that "something". I'm 35 and the only way for me to make existential dread disappear is to surround myself with little pointless pleasures like video games, porn and alcohol. I feel like this is wrong, this is not the "right" way to live life, but so far I haven't found anything that tells me "distracting yourself to death isn't worthwhile, you should suffer instead". I want to find that thing so bad, I want to believe that not all lives are equal and some deserve to be lived more than others, but so far my quest has brought me nothing but emptiness and disappointment.

I think it has to do with the illusion of free will smuggled through language. Learn to be happy, make yourself happy, do things that make you happy and other lazy aphorisms scattered throughout literature, religion and self help. The trick is to understand that your happiness was never in your control, just like pain or fear.
>>
>>25564270
>Nobody wakes up and goes looking for happiness
Actually yes they do.
Everybody wakes up and wants to have a good day.
Everybody wakes up wishing they were a master and not a slave.
And everybody already rich and driven wakes up trying to accomplish excellent work so that they may feel pride and build things they find beautiful.

In fact everybody wants to be happy.
>>
>>25564270
Go read some Jefferson, like Jesus Christ if happiness is your goal then happiness is your goal, there’s not some other thing where you forget what you were doing. Lazarillo de Tormes is writing Spanish, go read Gongorra if Spanish is really a thing that has to get attention or has value to trust or believe about anything. Pretty sure happiness is a goal that can be pursued and also when you claim a thing that does not make the opposite true, like if you claim happiness is your goal then that is your goal, there’s not some other force that’s comes in and is like things are actually opposite, no, phrases mean what phrase and if you are pursing happiness than you are pursuing and have a goal

I lived a life online for the first thirty years of my life. Only got my first full time job at 29, got married at 31, then moved out of my parents home and for the first time in my life no longer lived attached to my laptop. Would I say my life is happier now? Sure. But it’s due to a life where I have much less time to dwell on things. In saying that, the happiness is slowly fading, although I’m yet to find out if I’ll eventually go back to baseline. I still have times where I wish I ceased to exist, wish I could leave my marriage because I’m not good enough and because of the added burden I’ve put on someone else. I still overthink and get anxious. My mind is still a hellhole at times. But being busy definitely lessens the amount of time I have to be in my head. I think rather than happiness, I chase peace, peace in my mind
>>
>>25570607
>wish I could leave my marriage because I’m not good enough and because of the added burden I’ve put on someone else
Listen, it's the other way around, it always was. She is the woman, she is indebted to you. You should want to leave, not for the reasons you said, because she is the burden and she is not good enough.
If you got one wife you could get 100 more. She is a woman.

Good luck, ultimately 95% of your time will be 3D modelling, uv unwrapping, colouring texturing your models. It’s by far the largest part of making a game. Coding is the quick easy part.
A month in blender will give you the answer if you are cut out for it or not.
I spent a few months attempting making a fps. Coding was ok, modelling guns was ok but when it came to modelling the enemies I was just absolutely filtered.
It was still an experience but I should have just started at 3D modelling, thats the hard filter on if you can make a game or not.
>>
>>25567778

Ai is incredibly painful for coding, it can make ok basic scripts but the problem is a game needs like 20 scripts interacting with each other and it falls over hard at that point. You will end up needing to be able to read code and understand it or you will never end up with a working game.
Ie shooter you need character movement, camera movement, weapon manager, gun script, bullet script, player health script, enemy health script, enemy move script, enemy gun script, enemy projectile script, ammo pickup script, health pickup script, music script, sound effect script etc etc
All of those need to interact correctly with each other.
That’s not even getting into finite state machines which is how the enemy has ai. Then you have to line up all your enemies animations to trigger st correct time, bullets to hit enemy going at high speed, not shoot through walls.
You have the systems in the game engine for enemies to walk around map, not through walls etc, scripts to make doors work. It’s 1000s of lines of code, ai can make a template for one at a time but they won’t work with each other.
>>
>>25570664

You will basically post 10 scripts into an ai, explain what they all do, ask it to write a script to attach to an enemy projectile so it will recognise when hits player do x, when hits flagged environment object will do y, it will now give that script plus make changes to 5 of your existing scripts, you will put it into the game and it won’t work at all, then you will spend your entire weekend trying to solve this shit.
Eventually you will basically have hundreds of back and forwards with The ai to you basically just learn to code because the ai will just keep fucking it up because it’s too complex for it once their are multiple scripts interacting with each other
>>
One last thing, if you are making a fps dive straight into finite state machines. I had to recode my entire game as I made it without them first.
The minute you have the scenario your scripts are telling your enemy to move and shoot on the same frame and you didn’t program it with a finite state machine is the minute you realise it will never work. Same for shoot and die or move and stagger or really any point your enemy has a heirachy of things it’s being told to do and needs a way to always do the right one.

You have a capacity to help others suffer less. There are other ways to bring meaning into your life, but you can stand against the natural brutal order of the universe, the uncaring suffering it casts on all of its sentient creatures, with some effort.

Most people do this the laziest possible way by having a family and doing what they can for them. But it is just as meaningful to do it for people who aren't family.

Make two dozen meals and hand them out to the homeless on a Saturday. Go to the senior center and set up a table with a sign that says "I'll help you with your phone." Anything at all like that.

I mean, I'm saying this to you but I also think you won't do it. It's such a small chance. But doing that will give you exactly what you say you want. And you meet other people doing these things who are worth knowing, who are doing the same thing as you.
