What's the longest book you've ever read?
>>
>>25565967
The Bible i think
>>
>>25565967
The Stand, by King. 1100 pages and I remember like, 3-4 scenes. Must have been exceedingly boring because I remember more scenes from supposedly "lesser" books. I read Shike by Shea around the same time and I remember a dozen scenes at least.
>>
Reverend Insanity.
>>
>>25565967
Either the Bible, My Struggle (Knausgaard), or In Search Of Lost Time.
>>
Probably Les Misérables. Read a bunch of other 1000+ pages books but this was the longest of the ones I can think of.
>>
>>25566076
same. The premise and overall plot of the Stand still sound like something I'd really enjoy but I remember 2/3rds of the book was just people talking on the road and the weird visions/dreams they were having.
The complete version has maybe 200 pages of actual events
>>
ISOLT x3
>>
>>25565967
I'm very close to finishing Against the day. It's the first time I've ever read a 1000-page book. weirdly enough, I wasn't that surprised when Cyprian becomes a crossdressing nun. He was already a fag I guess

In Search of Lost Time.

Some law books, hansards, WTO shit, decline and fall.
been meaning to read a really schizo novel that is in the 3k pages but I need to know when i can next get time off work to power though it.
>>
>>25566285
Is it worth it? Do you get anything out of just reading Swann's Way (often released standalone)?
>>
>>25566169
Could you please tell me how this was? This is one of those things I'd like to read when I'm retired because it's so long
>>
>>25566407
NTA but yes to both questions. Swann's works either as keystone of the broader story or stand-alone experience, although the ultimate effect of the full book is absolutely worth it.
>>
I find it funny that the length of a book is one of its most talked about characteristics but basically no-one gives a fuck about the length of a film
>>
>>25565967
reading is fucking dead in this society retard you really think anyone here actually tells the truth about what they read?
>>
>>25566390
Shalom
>>
>>25566486
Books vary much more wildly in length, nearly all films are like 80-120 minutes
>>
>>25565967
I read the 11 volume story of civilisation by the Durants if you count that as one book, if you don’t it’s probably still one of those since some of them are like 1300 pages long and are way bigger than standard paperbacks
>>
Journey to the West sure ain't a rainy day read.
>>
1.5 million words, ~5000 pages. Read it twice. Very entertaining.
>>
>>25565967
I looked up some longer ones I've read:

The Glory and the Dream: A Narrative History of America, 1932–1972 - 472,000

War and Peace - 587,000 words (I think my copy was like 1,300 pages)

The Holy Bible (Catholic) about 1,000,000, but it's multiple works

The Second Apocalypse - 1.2 million (but it's 7 volumes)

A Song of Ice and Fire - 1.7 million (5 volumes)

Sun Eater - 2.2 million (7 volumes plus five shorter novels and short stories, but I didn't read all of those)

The Story of Civilization - 4.4 million, 11 volumes, but I didn't read the first volume or finish up the section running through Napoleon.

That's probably still the longest though. Just the one on medieval history is quite a doorstopper and then it basically has two more volumes for the late Middle Ages.
>>
>>25566801
I forgot Gibbon. That would actually count as one book and is 1.5 million, but I'll admit to skimming quite a bit and I also simply listened to parts (and fell asleep lol).

Gibbon has many great lines in there, but it goes on forever.
>>
>>25566407
Yes, it's a great read, you could read just Swann's Way but as >>25566450 said you won't get the full experience of the whole story with just Swann's Way. My personal favorite is The Guermantes Way.
>>
The Deipnosophistai
>>
>>25565967
The Sot Weed Factor

Jerusalem by Alan Moore, 1,180 pages wherein he admits that his hometown will someday probably be suicide bombed by Muslims but that's just part and parcel innit.
>>
>>25568884
>Jerusalem by Alan Moore
Why are British intellectuals so willing to let themselves be systematically destroyed by outsiders? China has lots of protectionists for its people and their majority atheist so it cant be the secularism.
>>
>>25568890

>>
>>25566407
I found Swann's Way infuriating. He spends so long pining over a woman he didn't even want. What gives?
>>

>>
>>25565983
Same. But I am reading a Veda (damn curiosity and hubris) so if I complete that, it will be my new record. Fucking Rig is over 8000 pages.
>>
>>25568890
It's something in the soul. To realize the mess your people have made and either interpret it as ignorance with consequences leading to entropy, or pioneering with consequences leading to greater strength. The Brits were never genuinely popular as successors to Rome so it's clear what pricked their ears over the centuries, it wasn't praise.

I do want to get back the time I spent on Guermantes Way since compared to Swanns Way it was just a shitpost.
>>
>>25565967
Atlas Shrugged. Read it aloud to my wife.

We call it "Bookshelf Shrugged".
>>
>>25571206
Guermantes Way was, as I recall it, more earnest yet ironical in depicting the motivations of the characters. At the same time, it had those romanticist ideas induced by French terms for eg. places in the mind of a young mind that I could very much relate to, as it was similar to thoughts I had when looking at a map of my country. Is English not like this?
>>

I don't count pages, I'm not autistic.

>since compared to Swanns Way it was just a shitpost
What's not to like about GW if you like Swann's? Volumes 3 and 4 are arguably the peak of the whole affair, with the sheer richness of their social worlds.

Currently forcing myself to finish Schattenfroh out of sheer spite.
Absolutely hate this dumb brick, this is why you should never allow professors to write fiction.
Like I get what he's trying to do, but somewhere along the line he forgot you're supposed to actually be entertained/engrossed by the book you bought. I already hate my father so I could have just saved myself 10 eur out of the 30 eur book price by buying myself 20 eur of acid instead
>>
>>25566407
Yes. My God, yes. Proust is probably the best writer we've ever had (at least for what concerns the hyper-introspective style of writing).
>>
>>25565967
Cambridge's History of Latin America. Several volumes, 8k pages, I think.
Conclusion: latinx people are retarded.
>>
>>25575713
...said Jesus and the Apostles
>>
>>25565967
Romance of the Three Kingdoms unabridged, it's ~2300 pages last I checked
>>
Reading Proust in a language other than French seems pointless though. What's remarkable of it is just the pure literary value tied to the language. Or what do you think is the value of Du côté de chez Swann or Le coté de Guermantes if not the pure language? A premonition of the later parts? The fictive duchess is just made up of memories and reflections starting from the language (and from the aroma of biscuit). There is no greater metaphysical insight or morale, just a man caught up reminiscing about the past, forgetting and finding time and age in language.
>>
>>25577879
You’re genuinely retarded and unread.
>>
>>25577883
You sound like the type of person having read a translation and patting yourself on the shoulder as Proust-reader in a public place while ordering pound cake with a cup of tea.
I can tell from your frustrated ad hominem and lack of argument.
>>
>>25577879
>There is no greater metaphysical insight or morale, just a man caught up reminiscing about the past, forgetting and finding time and age in language.
Sounds like there's a whole lot of metaphysical insight
>>
I don’t know. I read a lot. Recently the longest thing I can remember reading was the full three volume version of the Gulag Archipelago which is a little over 2,000 pages. It took over a month but it was a fantastic book that everyone should read.
>>
This is a data mining thread.
>>
>>25565967
Longest in terms of page count, or in terms of how long it took to read? The latter would be Being and Time; I don't know what the former would be off the top of my head.

Second for me. Gibbon's Decline and Fall exceeds it by about 500 pp or so
>>
>>25580290
Impressive. My parents had one but I was always topical in my relationship to it. I did read a Webster's 10th Collegiate Dictionary, however, and note down all the words I liked. Though I don't miss childhood I sometimes think.. oh, never mind

I used to be anxious about long books, but recently finished Giles Goat Boy which pushes 800p. This feat (for me) unlocked the ability to read so many fatties, and ive already acquired a few more.

Probably one of the I Spy or Where's Waldo? books. Also the widest.

>>
>>25565967
The Hebrew Bible. Read it cover to cover with commentary from Robert Alter. It took a while to finish.
>>
>>25566779
Hate Scientology but love this series. If only LRH stuck with fiction instead of finding a cult.
>>
>>25568890
It's weird. /pol/ blames Chinese or Jewish influence but they have always had low trust society and weird worship of Islam
>>
>>25566486
Especially considering a book can be read in short sessions but a movie is consumed in a single sitting. Personally I can read for hours at a time, but the idea of sitting watching a movie for 3+ hours is hell to me.
>>
>>25582238
My son is working his way through this, prefers the books. Anything I should know?
>>

all demographic replacement is spiritual punishment for colonialism, which China hasn't done. Isn't it curious that countries are largely overtaken by people groups they previously wronged (Rome: goths, England: The whole middle east, most of Asia, west Africans, America: Mexicans with Native American heritage

China didn't colonize anyone (except poking the japs a bit but they already paid blood for that) so they aren't getting colonized in the same way.

Britbong here, our values of tolerance are literally pathological. We have so much collective historical guilt over the legacy of empire that we cannot help but let outsiders walk all over us as recompense.
