>>25576062just finished this book and i have to say it has the most plausible aliens i've ever read. the books gives us both an alien psychology and ecology. it's up there with rendezvous with rama and solaris as one of the bests in first contact stories. i found it obnoxious that some of the human characters use they/them pronouns, but given that in the setting humans seem to be grown in tanks i turned a blind eye because they might actually be sexless.

>be reading Voyage of the Jerle Shannara #3: Morgawr>first couple of chapters feature the Morgawr himself inserting his hand into the back of several hundreds of slaves, one at a time, feeding upon their lives and mindraping them into becoming unaware slavesThis shit is disgusting and DARK and filthy. Looking forward to seeing the Morgawr get his shit pushed in later.
Currently reading The White Luck Warrior and it feels like the dark stuff is rather tame compared to its reputation. There are worse scenes in Berserk and that’s a manga aimed at young adults. Maybe the last two books will do it justice.

>autumn arrives>feel like reading 19th century mainstream fiction instead of SFFHSee you next summer, working class specimens.
I made the mistake of starting to read the wheel of time 2 years ago, fuck me do I regret it.>Slow as fuck>endless repetetive desciptions of everything>every character is a moron>Jordan clearly had a thing for difficult women (and spankings, and public nudity, did I mention spankings?)>Weird shit like the collared mindbroken womenBut since it starts out ok you are kind of in a frog boiling situation, where by the time you realize it's is shit you are already so far into it that you keep reading in the hopes that you did not just waste time. But no it kept getting worse and worse, with the absolute lowest point being book 10, where the entire book literally nothing happens to advance any main plot line. Also Perrin is the most boring character alive, and somehow Jordan managed to stretch the arc where his downright abusive wife gets kidnapped over 4 books. I was recently contemplating that I hadn't read as many interesting books the past 2 years only for me to realize it was because I wasted time reading this mediocre slogfest that is somehow considered a classic of the genre.I am currently about a fourth through the first Sandorson book, and my god is it an improvement. It is actually clear what character is where in scene and who is talking, descriptions don't just repeat over and over and don't drag on endlessly. Characters actually have noticable character traits instead of being vaguely bitchy. The story actually moves forward instead of just stagnating. I know Sanderson is disliked on the internet for basic prose among other things, but he is a far better writer than Jordan.

Tried reading Dagger & Coin book 1. The red flags were there. Just the more subtle red flags, like characters doing things with barely established reasons, implying a character has some deep seated relationship that informs how he interacts with future people, but it just ends up being tacit flashbacks to what happened to that relationship & you never get to really appreciate how much the relationship means because its presented in the most generically tragic way possible, underpinning an already generic gruff ex soldier type. But I didn't care much for how shallow rhe characters were until a certain plot point rhat destroyed the sensibility of the fictional world it was creating. I don't know if Fantasy writers really understand or appreciate despite their worlds being madeup, how much they are sneakily borrowing from real life for their worlds and character interactions to make sense, they get all the surface level stuff, but never truly the why's. Its almost like they don't quite ask themselves "If this was a real world, why would X allow this when it directly jeopardizes their interests" they can only write the immediacy of a consequence to a decision, not the underlying thing. So for example to make things simple. Its like somebody cheating on a medical exam with AI, and the immediate possible consequence the writer identifies is the student getting caught and thrown out of school rather than the more significant implication that if they did not get caught, a broken system where unqualified doctors make it through & healthcare quality of life goes down, & degrees are valued even less to skew heavily towards apprenticeship, which only further lengthens the already long time needed to produce ready doctors, which means that the amount of available doctors only becomes less and less at any given time blah blah blah. You get the point, Fantasy seems allergic to considering but most importantly engaging with these implications intelligently. Sci Fi too desu, atleast what Ive been exposed to (The Red Risings and Sun Eaters).
It was really The Dragons Path book that made me realize that there might just be something fundamentally wrong with the genre, even when it tries to be serious and "complicated" and give attention to stuff rarely considered in Fantasy, like banking, finance and economics. It just utterly fails as far as I'm concerned. And its not purely because they are not "realistic" its moreso that they don't have the same considerations in creating their world that the real world does and has to, because these are real lives and people in jeopardy when and if shit fucks up. Not just a collection of insular POVs who have to be conveniently special by mandate and have the most absurdly lucky and convenient things happen to them for their story to move forward, therefore casting away the legitimacy of the world in response because the world is supposed to be independent of people, not dependent on them. There is a back & forth relationship of course, but the world functions because we dont strictly have to build its foundations from the ground up, only harness them. So it doesn't change on a whim, it remains largely consistent, only our understanding changes, and thats important for things to matter.I don't know what the answer from henceforth is here. I just cant really believe that this genre is this bad at writing anything meaningful. I genuinely wonder how the fuck people get through fantasy without being depressed unless theyre just consuming it like popcorn TV, something somewhats straightforward, with familiar "likeable" archetypes to attach oneself to to get through the day and pass the time. I have a couple of books on my radar to move forward with. Either revisit Dandelion Dynasty. Or finally try Guy Kavriel or whatever his name is. Or that Japanese guy one anon mentioned.
>>25577942Your problem is fundamental to all media.
why is there a guy reading fantasy novels he hates just to 'prove' his theory that all fantasy novels are shit in the fantasy novel thread?what's the point man. like why even waste your time here. why is everyone in /lit/ like this
>>25578014he is just disappointed in the genre and expected more, it's not his fault the average sff-fan is braindead. people suck GRRMs lil pudgy dick and call him the greatest fantasy writer of all time, but his villains are cartoonish carboard cutouts that make no sense to anyone with even the tiniest knowledge of psychology, philosophy, sociology, etc.
>>25577942Read literary fiction instead. I recommend The World According to Garp if you want complex, believable, but flawed characters.
this book was no better than the previous one but was still enjoyablenonetheless, I couldn't help to raise a brown at how easily people forgot that the ape-man committed magnicide and slain dozens of innocent people before little provocationlike, there has been a real risk of starting a racial war yet the few decided to follow a guy, normally stoic even amoing his stoic race, to kill human and destroy structures while provlaiming himself a godalso, there was this new council of wizards which the author decided to link with the events of the first book, which retroactively made them incompetentother thing: picrel is the german print of the book (english name is Sword of Bheleu); it's a complete lie, for there is no dragon (or reptile) in this book, and I think it didn't even depict a horse
>>25578014Tbf SciFi is better than fantasy. The best fantasy novels are far less thought provoking in concept than the best SciFi novels. But prose and characterization can vary between them - very few scifi novels have as beautiful prose as The Buried Giant, for instance.

>>25577487I remember loving the first six books but bear in mind I was 14 when I started reading it. I eventually came to hate the series during Jordan's final tears and Sanderson's attempt to finish it. Still fond memories of those first six but I'm afraid they wouldn't hold up if I read them again now.
>>25577677I liked it

>>25578102That you still expect any kind of media to come anywhere close to the richness of living life.
>>25576062Solar Cycle finished. 15/10 incredible
>>25578143I only seem pedantic because the stuff I've read has been really shallow, but also character focused without the depth. If you write deep characters and complex themes, then I won't care as much about your worldbuilding. I have actually never cared about worldbuilding or systemic details this much until reading fantasy and scifi, and thats because those things are uniquely tied to the characters and themes in a way not a lot of other fiction I've consumed is. Sci-Fi and Fantasy from what I read seem like very inherently "social" themed genres, and by "social" I just mean "society and the concerns of how we relate to one another and value things as a collectives, and how that informs the individual" Or in other words "politics" But I didn't say "politics" because particularly dumb people have a very narrow idea of what that is, and so wouldn't think the things I put in quotes is politics. So "sociology" might be more apt idk. Fantasy draws so heavily from medieval society, Sci-Fi projects our society forwards, both are based on a more "real" foundation than most anime, but not real enough like many TV shows, that they don't need to justify them. Maybe its just the hardest genre to write, you dont need any worldbuilding if youre writing about pocket monsters that can come out of tiny balls, where you travel from town to town fighting leaders at gyms. Its so nonsensical that It can't even pretend to be deep or meaningful, its purely for retarded children. In a TV show like The Sopranos, or The Wire, explicitly political shows, you still don't need to justify the worldbuilding, just pull from contemporary politics and the world.A lot of fantasy is just straight up about class, the chosen bumpkin, the disgraced prince/knight, the surprsingly cunning noble wife, the bandit, the orphan. Whatever stupid archetype, is always drawing from "how does society judge this person based on class, gender, or race, and how can I be cringe with that" So you'll see the disgraced king forced to live like a peasant, the chosen one end up respected and commanding like a noble, the noble wife surprising the reader with how much she knows about the men's game of politics and war, the bandit/orphan who would actually be a good person if society wasnt so mean to them. The only reason it doesn't seem political is because its abstracted from real life, it takes politics and makes it vague, general, non specific, uncomplicated, so that the orcs are obviously the bad foreigners who just can't seem to be civilized, the nobles and knights are obviously not inherently better, but at the same time, the noble class is still preserved, never truly challenged, how else would the chosen farmboy get respect without the disgraced prince being able to see his true betterness by living like a peasant. I can't help but expect "richness" like the real world when fantasy steals so many real life political themes, and class systems, to prop up its narratives and characters.
Its ironic that I can argue the average fantasy or scifi is actually more cheaply dependent on "politics" or sociology than something like The Wire.
the apex is fantasy is mythology and deeply religious, and most likely long lost in translationthe irony of complaining about how all modern works (both fantasy and sci-fi) are political over philosophical/religious should not be lost on you

These Horn books are such a fucking slogIt's just a constant deluge of nothing happening straight-up - everything is indirect, every single event is just informed by people talking about it in the past tense, and even then so much of what they say is just obtuse or allusive. Wolfe did it a few times in the Silk books with a couple of particularly egregious examples towards the end - particularly the actual climax of the whole story, where they approach Mainframe at last, and then immediately cut to the characters saying "wow, what happened at Mainframe was crazy, huh?" - but those were instances in a generally clear narrative. In the Horn books it's like the whole thing. It's not enough that it has the rambling non-linear framing of an old man recounting his memories, that's tolerable. Even within he refuses too just speak those memories. So much of the story just doesn't exist, he'll briefly say "this reminds me of the time [some major plot point happened]", throw out a morsel of story completely out of context, and then not refer to it again for a hundred pages. Like who the fuck is Pig? I keep thinking, soon he will tell me who Pig is, soon Pig will be introduced. and it just refuses to happen. For one and three quarters books I've been hearing offhand references to this Pig fella and he still doesn't exist.I HATE THISAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAI'M NOT EVEN FINISHED GREEEENaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

as someone that has historically torn Greg Egan down for his horrible characters and unrealistic takes on humanity in a post scarcity world, I find it really weird that the focus of the internet's discourse around book of the new sun, book of the long sun, and book of the short sun is character moralities and motivations. For as deep as those worlds are, most people delve deep into the text to come out with opinions like "Severian is a womanizer who can't be trusted!" and "Silk sure does love to leer at whores!" I don't think that these commenters are stupid because they're obviously good at parsing Wolfe's text, but it just feels odd for such a rich world that that is where the discussion is. First of all, Severian and Silk are both characters in what is pretty much a totally alien world and society divorced from modern day, so it's a bit reductive to judge them by modern day sensibilities.. Secondly these are scifi novels, so who really cares...? They don't seem super out of line for normal people, it's not like Severian is like "Holy SHIT Jolenta's tits are HUGE, who cares about the Autarch or the coming of the new sun, because I'm the one who is about to cum!"

I've finally read every book I own. It feels so freeing. I also feel like a poorfag now cause I have nothing to read and my ereader is broken.
ngl I tried reading dandelion dynasty again, and im almost genuinely astonished by how much worse I find the writing now, so many instances of writing that is just "X character felt X way". "X character was sure that Y character was a good person", "X character felt that they could trust Y character". "X character couldn't believe that Y character would act in such a way, but X character was fine with it" The last one in particular illustrates my problem, characters will "feel" certain ways, but theres no actual character there so the only frame of reference you have for why they feel that way is the literal text saying so. I've already addressed why Show vs Tell is a flawed dichotomy. So the actual problem isn't whats being told, its that the telling is substituting a character. Notice the contradiction "X character couldn't believe Y character would do such a thing but was fine with it" Why the fuck should anybody care if it doesn't seem to matter enough for the character to "not be fine" with it? Theres just nothing there, nothing to actually give meat to the idea either way, no reason to understand why he would be fine with it, or why not, other than mere superficial difference, but thats contradicted by the disregard of the difference. Even if your excuse was "He is just observing that something is different, but he is not making a judgement" That doesn't make the characterization any more interesting, its still just "X is this, and Y is this" and theres nothing deeper. My theory, based on what I know of the Chinese History, is that this is just shitty foreshadowing of the fact that the two main characters have differences worth noting by one of those characters, enough to eventually care about in an extended context. The problem I will have then, is that either character will still not be anymore characters for that to not feel like pieces on a board who were on the same team, which were always different, simply being literally moved, to fight against eachother arbitrarily. Because the rules are arbitrary, they're not based in anything with enough depth to either explain the change, or to allow the change to be possible.I've been trying to think of how to communicate this. Mata Zyndu is very clearly a pure product of his upbringing, so much so that he's not actually a person, he has no real values, its just an extension of where he came from, theres no doubts, no questioning, no challenge, and therefore he never has to "be" those values because it could be either way. This isnt to say those values don't have reasons to be believed in, but Mata believes in them because they are his family's values, not because of the reasons they were developed and affirmed. That is the problem, there can be no complexity there because the values then become hollow representations of a side, not an actual thing.
Kuni Garu is similar but in the opposite direction, he seems to have taken nothing actually from his family or environment, he simply believes and acts a certain way because he just does, so its just the opposite end of the same problem. Why is Kuni so kind? Because he just is. Why does Luan Zya say Kuni has a noble mind despite being a commoner? Did he read any books? Develop a unique fascination with nobles because of an association with something he values by virtue of an experience he had? No. Thats just how Kuni is. It means that the depth of character can never ever be anything but exactly what is presented, exactly what he does, exactly what he says, exactly how he thinks. You can understand why people would like him. You can't what kind of unique circumstances would make the person so uniquely charming, charismatic, kind, understanding, noble, forgiving, and basically the model shonen main character who is always inexplicably empathetic and understanding in the face of evil, so much so that he can talk no jutsu anybody and it'll work because he, nor the people he deals with were ever real enough, nor were their problems real enough, to actually have to be engaged with "You think war sucks and is pain? Well people can be good because, I one person will be good to you", "Wow thank you naruto, I never considered such an arbitrary fact that some people can be nice, so war that results in pain doesnt suck and I dont need to hate the people who war and shit, also I hate war but am incredibly violent and evil, thats not incoherent at all, but we'll pretend it is because this isnt a real person anyway". I am obviously paraphrasing based off memory and some naruto fanboy will say Pain from Naruto isnt that stupid and simplistic, but I'm 90% confident he is.And unfortunately you run into the same problem with all fantasy, where the characters are just unfortunately too fundamentally intertwined with the world building and themes, so its almost impossible to get away with writing weak characters and still say anything meaningful about your fictional world. I havent even talked about how the "bad guys" in the book are literal ridiculous caricatures that exist solely to give the main characters a conflict to fight against. The book tries just a tiny bit to give them emperor some depth by making him go on a spiel about how he's uniting and advancing the fictional china by conquering it all. But he dies so quickly that his perspective doesnt get to meaningfully establish itself. I also predict that Kuni will arbitrarily adopt that similar perspective because hes a character that just does stuff because he just does.
