Who's taking the plunge?
>>25577300There's so much important lit to read that isn't midtier muh pomo getting mass printed under the zioworldorder
Bing bing wahoo have an upvote my fellow truelit patrician
>>25577300I put my pre-order in a couple days ago in case vollmann won the Nobel and they decided to jack up the prices. It Won't be released in my country till mid November however. Americans seem to be receiving their preorders now.>>25577312Cool story bro
>>25577300Hmm. I read his Rainbow Stories and a bit of Whores For Gloria and one or two other things and it seems clear that his strength is in direct vérité reporting, with the minimum possible amount of literary tarting up. It's absolutely not in planning or organization or invention. So a massive novel . . . naaa.
>>25577300>A Table for 4chanBit on the nose innit
>>25577395Crazy opinion, Seven Dreams and Europe Central are his best books.
>>25577304>midtier muh pomo getting mass printed under the zioworldorderHe was investigated by the FBI as a potential suspect for the Unabombings, and had to fight with his publisher to get this one out.
>>25577300I'm poor, so $130 for the box set is all my money. It was supposed to be the last of my alcohol money, but I'm trying to quit (again). I've been needing something to distract me from wanting to drink. I don't have much to live for. I've never read anything written by Vollmann, but I'm thinking about buying this box set when it comes out next weeks or whenever it does, and just going all in. My a light history buff and know a lot about CIA and like Americanism, so this seems like a fascinating book. Might be just interesting enough to keep me busy for a few months. I'm thinking about doing a slow-read and writing lots of notes on the book and doing a long review that I'll post on here after I'm finished. I'm not interested in reading any of his other books, so I wont bother. I'm just going to jump right into this one. I did read about 10 pages of Dying Grass or whatever it's called (I only got the free sample to Kindle) just to make sure I don't hate his writing style before I go into A Table of Fortune. His style seems like a more schizophrenic version of DFW, lacking almost any rhythm other than one sentence might logically follow from another one, which seems very intentional since imposing rhythm is human nature and every writer naturally does it. So I actually find his schizophrenic style to be interesting enough as a style choice, and should pose well with the topic of CIA Americanism, which itself feels like a very schizophrenic topic. So yeah, I'll be one of the few who will take the plunge and read this absolute massive schizo-slop. Why not?
>>25577300I hope Vollmann has at least 500 pages dedicated to 9/11, most of which should take place during that day, in New York, from the POV of people in and around the Towers. I want to feel like I'm there in that moment watching the towers fall from the street below. I want to smell the smoke and asbestos in my nose. I want to feel the shaking under my feet as the second tower comes down.
>>25577300Is this what's cool in trendy contemporary lit circles? 3000 page novels? jesus christ
>>25578761Try a 3,000 page treatise on the ethics of violence.
>>25578407We should all aspire to this
>>25579211Based Vollmann normalizing the 3,000 page novel (the future of standard novel formats), which should be easy to achieve if you co-write with Grok
>>25577304brain damage post
>uppercase words>italicized words>using the pynchon tone of "a certain blah blah" and "by which i mean" quirky conversational tonethis guy always feels like a rip-off of someone better idk
>amazon sample is entirely about islamic terrorismwho gives shit could anything be more irrelevant?
>>25581994It's 4 volumes. It's about the CIAs involvement in shaping America and It spans from the cold war to 2019. Islamic terrorism was a pretty big deal and will be very relevant again pretty soon my surface dwelling friend.
>>25582017Just read a fucking history book that already covers this you fucking dork
>>25582022I do. Not sure how that's relevant. Fiction facilitates different responses than just reading facts.
>>25582017you tried two terror attacks in the like the last two weeks and both failed without one casualty. no one cares.
>>25582026historical fiction is for chicks. men read history books without the need for a fake ass romance tacked on.
>>25582029Inane psychobabble.
>>25581994There is no Amazon sample of the book yet
>>25582079bullshit dude i just skimmed it
>>25582084Nah you're lying
>>25582123>In the first days of January he installed as Secretary of Energy his chessman Spencer Abraham, who had recently cosponsored a bill to obliterate the Department of Energy.stay mad
>>25582128You green texted a random sentence that could literally be from anywhere. Looks like you grabbed something off wikipedia.
>>25582144>doubling down on pretending there's no amazon preview of a book when there clearly isweird way to waste a saturday night but ok
>>25577300My library bought a copy
>>25577300Vollmann is severely autistic and adds way too much cringy "flare" to his historical fan-fic slop. Impossible to get through a page of his slop because I have to stop and roll my eyes so much, which means I have to keep taking my eyes off the page. Writing eye-roll-inducing slop isn't a great business model for a writer. Big oversight by Bill.
>>25577300>the plungeit's going to hit $200 around christmas
>>25582180Should I buy like 20 of them and put them in storage for like 5 years? It'll go out of print really fast and be worth $900 a set by then.
>>25582235honestly? yea. he also wrote a week ago that he's going to die soon from cancer.
>>25582170Do you have an example?
>>25582236Sucks that he'll never finish Seven Dreams
>>25577300I have no idea who or what this is.
>>25577300
>>25582170nucular truth, vollman is cringe
>>25583386You literally have nothing better to do
>>25583394You have never read Vollmann lol
>>25583485>You have never read VollmannWhy are predditors incredibly insecure regarding their middlebrow generic writer?
>>25583490Because it's true. Have you?

>>25577300i'm excited to pirate the epub and audiobook :)
>>25585906Joke's on you, the pirated epub will fuck up the fonts and the audiobook won't convey them
>>25586767oh no not the heckings fonts. How will he read the book without the hecking correct fonts
>>25586781If you read this corrupted into plaintext, then you have not read the book.
>>25586794Political writing like this is so boring. Once you know the stuff in the Middle East was just a sham through and through, no extra commentary or perspective is needed. Still, I'd like one of you, if you have the time, to redpill me on Vollmann. Is he just another tranny (I've seen the photos), or does he actually have anything worth reading?
>>25586794imagine reading 3000 pages of this crap who gives a shit
>>25577300>vollman wrote a book about being a millennialthanks vollman you gay retard im sure lots of people are gonna read it
>>25586805correct take. the premise on which this book is founded is stupid. if i wanted to examine the past three thousand years of israeli recriminations and complaints about their neighbors i'd just go online and argue with a hasbara bot.
>>25586805>>25579211
>>25586794Lol this is worse than I thought it would be
>>25577300>William T. Hackmann
>>25586767i've had little to no issues with "fonts" in epubs.>the audiobook won't convey themuh... that's a good thing?
>>25586794Garbage.
>>25587952Let's see Anon's 3000 page history of the CIA written while battling cancer
>>25589213>battling cancerso what, going to the hospital once a week and just sitting there? Oh man, that sounds like such a hard battle.
>>25577300I already got it
>>25589213Pic-related. Bonus: it isn't a rambling 3000 page diatribe written by a cross-dressing schizo.
>>25589289Having read that already this is an entirely different read and you're really missing the point if you think this is supposed to be a CIA history
>>25577300>102 bucks for a .azw
>>25589296If I wanted to hear what a schizotypal cross-dressing freak thought of the government I'd just read Burroughs with a John Waters movie on in the background.
>>25589316Yeah I still have no clue what he was on about with Dolores. But have you read Europe Central or any of the Seven Dreams?
>>25586794imagine thinking an ereader cant do this
>>25589322>Yeah I still have no clue what he was on about with DoloresMethod acting
>>25589316God you categorizers are such faggots.
>>25577300Something tragic about Vollmann's career getting a second wind right after his kid drinks herself to death and he's diagnosed with terminal cancer.
>>25591145Everytime I see this I can see him going to Afghanistan, meeting the Mujahideen, them constanly asking him to buy weapons because they assume he's from a rich family while he constantly gets diarrhea until they kick him out to Pakistan.
>>25591308Not like they needed the weapons anyway
>>25577300Does Vollmann even stand for anything? What's the point of his books? Some vague American aesthetic? His work feels empty. Same with Wallace. You can tell they never read philosophy books.
>>25593828If you read Vollmann he will sometimes reference philosophers, and he especially brings them up directly in regards to violence and it's ethics in Rising Up and Rising Down.
>>25593828He's a blank slate who reinvents himself to understand the mindset of his subjects. You may not like it, but this is the ideal writer.
>>25577300The most glowing thread on /lit/ right now.>Grrrr I HATE this anti-CIA book! Lmao you guys are so painfully obvious. Makes you wonder about the "I" part of CIA.
>>25578407
>>25594881>DUDE did you know CIA BAD?This shit kept boomers engaged for 60 fucking years.Ok CIA bad, now what?>Golly gee, I guess I better push one of two buttons in the mono-party state and buy more bumper stickers.>Curse your allegiance to the state, I'm rebelling by not voting!Woah ZOG is done for.
>>25593828>You can tell they never read philosophy bookholy pseud. i'm not even joking.
>>25593828>>25595269Imagine being the type of individual who looks down on an author who nearly dies interviewing Mujahideen and understanding the North Pole's ecology because he doesn't namedrop public domain works that can be accessed via Google
>>25595634Why did you reply to me? >>25595269
>>25595269If you are creating art but don't read philosophy your work is not worth engaging with as you probably have no actual interest in the human condition.
>>25595665Vollmann literally wrote an entire short story centered around reading Heidegger. You're a retard.
>>25595634How does almost dying in some shithole make you a good writer?
>>25596051How does parroting the last shitpost you saw on /lit/ make you a good writer?
>>25591136You just categorized so I guess that makes you a faggot.
>>25586805His seven dreams books are all worth reading. The best historical novels I've ever read. My favorites are probably Argall and The Dying Grass
>>25597314>My favorites are probably Argall and The Dying GrassThat's cope. Reading sucks nowadays in general, but for sure nobody is enjoying reading a 1000 page autism-dump about some boring American/Indian war from the 1800s. You are performative. Get a real hobby like day-drinking or playing Arc Raiders.
>>25597607>but for sure nobody is enjoying reading a 1000 page autism-dump about some boring American/Indian war from the 1800s.Genuine question, why do you think someone wouldn't enjoy that?
>>25597619He has no theory of mind.
>>25577300Ordered. Supposedly will be here on the 21st. >>25578407His style is nothing like DFW's and for me, Vollmann's biggest fault as a writer is everything including characters are ultimately in his voice. Vollmann has a very strong and consistent style. The beginning of Vollmann novels are weird and so far I have had to force my way through the first 100 or 200 pages but he always gives me something to make me want to struggle through it and so far it has paid off. >>25597314Five Dreams.
>>25597701>had to force my way through the first 100 or 200 pageskek. Do litcucks really?>u just have to waste 10+ hours reading to get to the le hecking good partsfuck you
>>25597793It takes you 10+ hours to read 100-200 pages? Average reading speed is around 1 page per minute, how retarded are you?
>>25597809Yes some of us have to think about what we are reading you fucking NPC
>>25597867lol. Probably should have put a little thought into that wording.
>>25597867>seems like you’re walking a marathon not running>ERM IT TAKES SOME OF US MORE ENERGY OKAY???Fatty delusions in literacy.
>>25598310>>25597809I imagine if you lack any other competency in life, you end up here, trying to mog people with "reading speed". I shudder at the thought of what you will do with this ability to acquire knowledge at such mighty speeds.
>>25577300I'm too poor too afford that
>>25577304the guy who wrote this probably found the time to both read all that important lit and publish his own novel, you're just lazy
>>25599413Do you use your imagination for anything other than making yourself feel better about being a retard?
his language use just isnt good enough for me to read any more of him
>>25597809> Based on the analysis of 190 studies (18,573 participants), we estimate that the average silent reading rate for adults in English is 238 words per minute (wpm) for non-fiction and 260wpm for fiction. The difference can be predicted by taking into account the length of the words, with longer words in non-fiction than in fiction. The estimates are lower than the numbers often cited in scientific and popular writings. The reasons for the overestimates are reviewed. The average oral reading rate (based on 77 studies and 5965 participants) is 183wpm.No one is actually reading a page a minute, you lying retard. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0749596X19300786
>>25602040He is talking fiction, which often has pages of low word count for dialogue and the like, short pages at the end and beginning of chapters, etc.
>>25579211only $130 for this? seems really cheap all of a sudden?
