Is there an equivalent to the works of Gilbert and Sullivan in other languages than English, or are they a singular anomaly in the world of literature?
Gilbert and Sullivan’s works have the characteristics of not just being comic or funny operas replete with wit, but also being family friendly considering Victorian morals. I think that Mozarts’s Singspiele are too dark and that Offenbach’s opéras boufons are too lewd. Granted, I have only seen one of each: The Magic Flute and Orpheus in the Underworld respectively.

Anyone?

Franz Lehar/ Die Lustige Witwe is probably the closest to what you are asking for. Also Sigmund Romberg- the Desert Song. He was a Czech immigrant to the US but wrote in English. Hes influenced by Viennese opera.

‘The Merry Widow’? That was just on at the Opera House; I missed it.
Is it scandalous in any way?

It’s a comic opera like G and S are. The plot is that Danilo Danilovich turned down marriage to Hanna Galwari (frequently renamed Sonia in modern adaptations) because his uncle forbid the match. Hanna/ Sonia is massively wealthy and owns most of her small Balkans’ country’s GDP. She lives in Paris and the attaché of her homeland contacts Danilo to win her back so the money stays in her homeland instead of going over to France and bankrupting their micro state.

It’s funnier than I describe it. You should check out the Maurice chevalier movie first then see it in theater if you like it.

Thanks. I’ll look into it.

Are you looking specifically for non-english theater or are you open to literature as well? Because I think the novels of Alexandre Dumas would be good for what you're looking for.
