what the shitfuck is this who is this literally who
stick to your containment threads, manchild
>>25579025Oh come on. Its not like they gave the prize to some literally-who who lives in south east Asia or something. Fair enough you may never have read anything she wrote, but to literally never have heard of her you'd have to be some sort of peasant.Did you want a Bob Dylan to win again?
>>25579025There's absolutely no reason to be this angry about the nobel of all things.
>“Euripides,” writes Carson, “seems inclined to lead us into the middle of this question and leave us there. It makes me think of a hard-boiled egg. Cut it open, you see an exquisite design— the yellow circle perfectly suspended within the white oval. The two shapes are disjunct and dissimilar yet construct one form. They do not contradict or cancel out, they interexist. Can you say one is prior? Circle as distorted oval? Oval as imperfect circle? Rather they each follow the other in a perfect system called egg.”
Anne Carson has a classics background, worked (works?) in academia, and I think is a born and raised Torontoite which is the Canadian version of being a NYC girl. She's about as /lit as a female author gets. The only book of hers I've owned is her translation of Sappho, which is the definitive one in English and translates all of the fragments as well as the few surviving full poems, it's titled "If not, winter." It's good.If you are interested in literature you should have been at least vaguely aware of her. Any of the authors that were candidates it's reasonable to be a literature person and not to have read, but Carson isn't one of the ones it's reasonable not to have known.I've never read an Anne Carson book but I've seen her on the shelves and have been vaguely aware of her for maybe 20 years. Being shocked and surprised about her getting the Nobel says more about you, OP, than it does about her.
Gonçalo M. Tavares and Lídia Jorge completely robbed, the academy loves sucking Anglophone dick.
>>25579377Norwegians are the Rosicrucians of the Monaco of the Cape Town of Scandinavia
She's actually a pretty good poet, I prefer the Nobel being given to her than some feminist bitch like Margaret Atwood
werent some of you lads predicting carson to get it sometime
>>25579042>Did you want a Bob Dylan to win again?Yes. Best to ever do it. Deserves two Nobel prizes. And don't think it doesn't pain me to say it, because I'm quite antisemitic.
>>25579025I've never read anything by her, but she's definitely not a literally who and I assumed she was going to win, to be honest, as all the other candidates were pop-lit or genuine literally-whos,
>>25579519Chuds are dunking on her on Twitter and saying Western civilization has collapsed https://goyimx.com/NewYorker/status/2108211805906776427
>>25579561Houellebecq deserved it.
>>25579572Wellbeck, Pynchon, DeliLlo, etc., aren't lesser writers to Carson by any means, but they are never going to win a Nobel. Get serious. They don't fit the criteria. Be happy they didn't give it to Atwood.
>>25579519Admittedly I haven't read any of her books. But from everything I've seen of her she just wordcels to make the most trite observations sound profound. Picrel says nothing of substance and is just her whipping up hysteria over male violence like Jews do with the 6 gorrilion. Just like all the other foidlosophy female readers circle jerk over it's nothing but moralizing with flowery language.
People cannot honestly be defending this fucking garbage as Nobel Prize worthy. Boring woke trash.
>>25579743That's not the whole poem and the spacing is wrong.
>>25579743It’s shit
>>25579743This is just the type of person who can really *get* an ancient Greek military commander
>>25579025She started with the Greeks. You mad?
>>25579025The reactions so far seem to come from enraged people that haven't read her and elated people that also haven't read her
>>25579025>I only read slop47 take.
>>25579743Contemporary poetry is so worldlyJust me me me me me me

>>25579537Everyone was, she's been a favorite year in and year out for ages
Is there a group with less to say (besides jews) about literally anything at all than bougie upper-middle class western women?
>>25579025They should just give Ishiguro the second Nobel Prize.
fpbp
>>25579025Honestly, she's pretty great. A rare example of a writer who takes literature very seriously and at the same time is very childish and playful, but it's all very earnest. It's not about signaling to the reader how erudite and wacky and rAnDoM she is, unlike a certain American writer this board loves.>>25579596I get why you got that impression and there's some of truth in that, but overall I don't feel it's representative of her style. She's very funny and lighthearted, but it's hard to pick it up from excerpts that out of context seem completely serious, and it's not like the etymology of rape and rupture isn't serious business, but even in that there's something a bit humorous, "the hysteria of the end of the world".
>>25579025>didn't know about Anne Carsonngmi
>>25579565I'm getting a feeling the replies on Twitter aren't poetry readers
>>25579362>born and raised Torontoite which is the Canadian version of being a NYC girl.Sounds horrible. The only good thing to come out of Toronto was Rush.
>>25579025>who is this literally whoSTART WITH THE GREEKS: THE POET: THE ESSAYIST
>>25580081Wait until you read some ancient Roman poetry

Autobiography of Red is great. Her Sappho translation is great, though it made some other classicists mad. She is difficult and not one thing. Nothing she does is quite pure. It's hard to get into her and suspect most lit tards won't have the patience for it. It rides a very fine line between self-seriousness and irony/ self-mocking humor that several in this thread have already proven themselves incapable of recognizing. She is funny. I have her Decreation on my nightstand right now. Its a mix of everyhting, poems, essays, and apparently there's an opera libretto later. It's over the top in reference and form and it's not really shy about it. So you kind have to want to be along for the ride. She has just done her own thing for forever like that. I find her worthwhile.

>>25580192I'd be open to reading her. What would you suggest?
>>25580641NTA but wrote this in another thread >>25580616. NOX is my favorite, but Autobiography of Red is probably the place to start. That or her Sappho translation. Float's also extremely good but hard to find. Glass, Irony, and God maybe?
>>25579585what makes you say that? Pynchon could get it if he doesn't die.
>>25579838Not all of ancient Greece is le epic 300 military commander, big boy
>>25580641Autobiography of Red or NOX.
>>25579227This sounds like a deliberate mockery of a conceited person. Wow.
>>25579025her poetry legitimately sucks this is stupider than bob dylan's nobel prize desu
>>25579025Foidslop
>>25581920She at least publishes literature
>>25580659thats sounds intriguing desu, i'm going to read Autobiography of Red and find out for myself
>>25582011You'll enjoy it. Read Glass, Irony, and God next
>>25580973Sophocles was a general.Aeschylus was a hoplite and personally valued his military service even more than he valued his literary work. And most Greeks were required to fulfill basic military duties. So its very likely Euripedes also served in the military, and he lived through the Peloponnesian War.Doesn't exactly sound like the type of world a Canadian feminist would really understand. Now you owe me an apology but I have a big heart so don't worry about being wrong.
>>25582402Have you even read Euripides? Have you ever read any of the ancient accounts of his life, as someone who consorts with intellectuals like Socrates, or as a man so given to moodiness over losing tragedy contests that he left for Macedonia? And he's the Greek tragedian most amenable to modern sensibilities, get a clue.
>>25582402Euripides literally hated all of Athens and its military/ political elite. He was the Leftist Hasan Piker of his day. “Trojan women” in particular is a thinly veiled parable for the massacres of civilians in the recent war Athens had been in.
