Is Taoism compatible with Christianity?
>>
>>25580820
No because Christianity is exclusive
>>
depends, which school of Daoism?
>>
>>25580820
There are a few zen parables that are just like those in the gospels. Some principles of confucianism can be translated to the christian concept of charity. I guess bein one with the tao can be equated with being one with god if you look at it a bit sideways
>>
>>25580836
>which school of Daoism?
Which ones would you say aren't compatible?
>>
>I am the way, the truth, and the life
Yeah, it's not even a debate.
>>
>>25580859
the religious/spiritist ones?
>>
Syncretism is a sin, so no. And yes, I'm a Christian who has an interest in Daoist philosophy.
>>
>>25580820
I've always treated Daoism as compatible in so far as it doesn't seek to be the ultimate nature of things. Trinitarian thought ultimately says that evil and good are both at once related (wheat and tares roots) and separable (thrown out at the end of time). Doaism claims eternal relation. I think it's fine to see democracy vs. aristocracy or even change vs. stability through a daoist lens, i.e. they feed into one another despite claiming to be opposites. Even genius and idiocy, as idiocy gives material for the genius to study.
>>
>>25580820
Just read the title. The Tao IS Christ. Not the other way around. Taosim is "compatible" in the sense that what the taoists were looking for and trying to describe (which is impossible, in language), is Christ. They have the theory, Christians have the theory in the Person.
>>
>>25581001
I recall reading in a Vatican II commentary that it was essentially determined that Christianity can be syncretized to a certain extent with most philosophical systems. The exact quote was something along the lines of "One can be a Christian and a Buddhist in the same sense that one can be a Christian and a Neoplatonist." Not saying I agree, just pointing it out.
>>
Tao is, but Taoism isn’t.
>>
>>25581143
This is a confusion of terms and a baseless acceptance ot Vatican II evolutions in theology. A Buddhist must accept principles like impermanence and impersonal absolute. It’s impossible to square these with a God that lived as a man and has a personal relationship with you. Furthermore, the ethical bases which people use to become Buddhists are more evolved in Christianity. If one becomes a Buddhist because they’re called to the sort of self overcoming of the Buddha, who overcame the self more than Jesus Christ. This guy was so beyond his own human ego that they tortured him, put him on a cross, and he said “forgive them…”. Even if you don’t accept that he really performed miracles, Christ was the most enlightened individual who ever lived and there isn’t a single character of his stature in all of religion or history. Being a Buddhist after Christ is retarded.
>>
>>25581172
It's worth mentioning that Chrust's oublic ministry was 3 years, Guatama was like 50? Sermon on the Mount far exceeds any other moral exortation ever given in human history regardless of your religion.
>>
>>25581172
>Christ has a personal relationship with you
stfu
>>
>>25581001
Christianity is THE syncretist religion, though. That's why it's been so successful.
>>
Christianity - "Please do what you can to help the poor, the sick, the needy, the old, the young, the orphaned, the widowed, the oppressed, et cetera. If you want to have a personal relationship with Christ then you need to concern yourself with The Least of These My Brethren."

Taoism - "LMFAO are you really trying to uplift peeps? ololololol who tf does that XDDD??"
>>
>>25580820
If you twist and turn enough, cut off some sticking out bits. Then you can fuse christianity and some other religion. Then later discard the non-christian parts as non-christian.
>>
>>25581211
>personal relationship with Christ
kill yourself
>>
>>25581291
watch out everyone we got a badass over here
>>
>>25581211
Daoism isn't slave morality.
>>
>>25580820
What kind of Christcuckery? What kind of Taoism? Regardless, you can make them compatible if you want. It's all nonsense.
>>
>>25581549
Daoism is about having no ambition. It's about continuing with your current life instead of trying to achieve anything or strive for anything. There's no philosophy more slavelike than Daoism.
>>
>>25580820
Geomancy is incompatible with Christianity (like all forms of divination) and AFAIK all branches of Taoism practice geomancy. So no.
>>
>>25581638
Since when did the New Testament prohibit divination?
>>
>>25581648
It's in Romans IIRC.
>>
>>25581001
>is an improvement on Judaism
Yeah doesn't compute
>>
>>25581620
Urmom is all nonsense. I drop a load in her and she keeps following me around.
>>
>>25581634
>freedom is slavery!
Ok Orwell
>>
Christians piggy back themselves to everything, it’s unseemly. At least Muslims just call everything else blasphemy and forcefully convert instead of trying to invade and co opt native faiths through loose association
>>
>>25581682
>you must worship a cube
No
>>
>>25581650
>IIRC
post the verse, dipshit
>>
>>25581675
What would le christ think of that, I wonder...
>>
>>25580831
Taoism isn't a religion, and Christianity doesn't exclude it.
>>
>>25581102
>The Tao IS Christ.
The Tao that can be named is not the true Tao, champ.
>>
>>25581634
You don't understand Taoism. It's about acting when the conditions are right, instead of struggling futilely when they're not.
>>
>>25581682
It's pitiful, isn't it. They know their own religion is a bust, so keep trying to rope others into its sphere.
>>
>>25581889
Yes. the paradox, not the contradiction, of the Trinity. God is in the world and beyond the world, revealed and yet a mystery, human and God, mortal and immortal, both named and still unnamed. God in His Essence is still beyond comprehension and beyond our world
>>
>>25580820
Are you joking? Of course not
>t. Christian chink
>>
>>25581102
>>25581172
I see the vision. Impersonal absolute is because they did not have revelation. Impermanence is right, seen properly as Solomon talks about in Ecclesiastes.
Still, they're in a partial error, so guided right it leads to conversion.

You can translate Christianity to Taoist terms in order to evangelize taoists similar to how Christianity was translated into Platonic and later Neo-Platonic terms for the sake of proselytizing the Hellenized peoples of the ancient world. However, the two ultimately disagree just as how the Christian God is similar but not identical to the Platonic Demiurge or the Stoic Logos

There are certain concepts from Taoism which are very useful for understanding Christianity. In fact, this is why the in many (protestant) Chinese translations of the Bible, the divine Logos in the gospel of John is identified with the Tao while Roman Catholic Translations prefer the term "Yan" which means speech
>>
>>25581648
It's a prohibition from the Old Testament but also in the new testament. Divinitation is generally a sin, even when the witch of Endor called up the ghost (elohim) of the prophet Samuel on behalf of King Saul, it was a sin
>>
>>25581634
not true and I'm a christian
>>
>>25580820
I read this book and it's embarrassing how bad it is. Anyways, it's as compatible as any other philosophy for the most part.

As always Buddhism makes christians seethe.
Never the other way around.

No, of course not. Stop being a fucking retard.

In fact it was satanic long before Vatican II.
Dig deep enough, and you'll find out.
Babylonian solar cult.

Taoism is compatible with everything because to practice it you do nothing.

YES
>>
>>25580820
Christianity pretends to be exclusive but is in fact historically a massively syncretic and perennialist religion that has repeatedly absorbed other religions wholesale. So long as you can get them to acknowledge the Christ the rest will fall in place eventually.

>uuu but
No, protestants don't get a say in this since they're an instance of Rome successfully converting pagan retards so well that even when they broke away in the "Reformation" they framed it as a defense of Christianity instead of what it actually was--political revolt from Rome.

Confucianism and Taoism is just Christianity split in two when you think about it (but not in the gay perennialist/traditionalist way)
>>
>>25588916
No it's not, lol. Confucianism is literally just bureaucracy taken to a religious extreme. Once again/lit/ process they don't know what they're fucking talking about and that THEY DON'T FUCKING READ
>>
>>25589092
>process
*PROCEEDS*
>>
>>25580831

You want the jingjiao documents, sometimes called 'the jesus sutras'. It's not quite as cut and dry as Arianism (Read, so much of the argument seems to be entirely based on word order and exegesis and whatever the version of exegesis that examines physical structure of the sentence is rather than its meaning) but it's worth a read.

I mean, unless you're Orthodox, in which case it's a hilarious way to get beaten by a priest.
>>
>>25589092
You're confusing Confucianism with legalism. Confucianism is mainly just virtue ethics, but the legalism-niggers butchered it and made it all about "muh rationalism, muh government".
>>
>>25585413
What’s the real difference between saying pretty much everyone is partially wrong and you’re fully right and unga bunga? The book is just grafting Chinese philosophy where it doesn’t really belong to strengthen Christianity.
