>and then we went to Rue Montorgueil and got drunk at the Au Rocher de Cancale>and then we went to Rue de Buci and got drunk at the Maison Sauvage>and then we went to Rue Mouffetard and got drunk at the Café de la Contrescarpe>and then we went to Rue des Martyrs and got drunk at the Café du Marché>and then...
>>25581306Yeah worse is A Moveable Feast which follows roughly the same pattern and then ends with the line "and this was how it was in Paris when we were very poor and very happy".People who are very poor can't afford to get drunk in bars and cafés and restaurants every night. What he actually meant was, "this was how it was in Paris when we had lots of money and spent it all on alcohol." But that doesn't sound so rugged and cool.
>>25581306Yeah I got semi annoyed by the constant descriptions of going out to cafes and getting drunk but alcoholics are really like that so it got a pass and the rest of the book made up for the repetitiveness of the drinking
>>25581306I hate this dumb book about cucks doing stuff in Spain
>>25581306The only Hemingway book I could not finish; it feels like some weird cuck fetish >>25583151It used to be a lot cheaper to go to bars and normies would waste all their money there I love Erich Remarque but he runs into the same problem
>>25581306>>25583151>>25583540>>25583552>>25584386You're doing yourself a disservice reading the book in translation.
>>25583151A Moveable Feast has that scene where the hot girl in the bar refers to the giant precum splotch soaking through his pants as "healthy juices" though. Or whatever.
>>25581306One of his worst. Basically a 1920's scene report. All of the characters suck. You hate them all and you don't care what happens to them. I liked it when I was 17 because I wanted to be a drunk parisian hipster that smoked cigarettes and talked about books in cafes, but as an adult I despised it and couldn't even finish 1/4 of it. I don't drink anymore because I was basically an alcoholic. Hemingway was also an alcoholic, but the way he writes about drinking is retarded. He makes it seem like this macho pastime. It's in all of his books, and once you see it, it sort of wrecks everything for you. A Farewell to Arms is a masterpiece, though.
>>25583151soon it will be affordable, saår!https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nr-BvndFKj8&ra=m
>>25581306Yeah you illiterate faggot, it's alluding to the drunken, aimless wandering of the lost generation
>>25585758Then this could've been a 10 page short story
All I learned by the end of this is that women ruin everything. If they hadn't of taken Brett with them it would have been dudes making fun of the jew, a whole lotta drinking, some bullfighting, drinking, and someone hitting Barnes up for money to tap a whore. Also some more drinking.
>be impotent depressed alchie>hang around some boring whore anyway and get jealous when she fucks somebody elsei truly hated this MC
>>25583151>>25584386The exchange rate was very favourable in the 20s, that's why so many penniless expats and writers went to Paris. The equivalent today would be like hanging around in Vietnam and drinking 50c bottles of beer everyday.
imo this book is really dependent on the American context. Imagine>born around turn of century in USA>backwater protestantism>zero culture>serve in WWI, go to Europe>see catholicism>see culture>holyshit.jpg>come home>protestantism still sucks>zero culture still sucks>fuckthis.targaThe problem is that Hemingway is an incurable American. That's why he writes like complete shit, aside from being a journalist. Catholicism and bull fights are just cool things to go see, no actual higher meaning. No surprise he supported the commies
I liked it.
>>25588774This, and even then they are all broke in the end, except Jake.
>>25585008Bill was cool. He should have stayed fishing in Spain with his homie instead of chasing broads without a pecker.
