What are we reading for Spooktober, /lit/?
>>
>>25581463
>you HAVE to read horror lit in October
>you HAVE to watch horror movies in October
>you HAVE to listen to Monster Mash 24/7 in October (which I don't necessarily have a problem with)
This all feels very limiting and strict and militant.
>>
>>25581471
No one is forcing you to do anything you don't want.
It's just a fun tradition to have.
>>
>>25581471
You WILL be spooked this October, I demand it
>>
Fwankenstein and den pwobabwy Somefing Wicked Dis Way Comes
>>
>>25581485
>the sucksex vampire
>>
>>25581506
>Fwankenstein
People keep posting about it again and again. What’s up with that? :)
>>
>>25581660
It's the spooky season. Why not start with the best? That's what I think is going on anyway.
>>
>>25581471
You have to watch horror anime too
>>
>>25581463
I recently finished Russian 19th Century Gothic Tales, I'm currently reading An Autumn Story by Tommaso Landolfi, and after that I've got The Phantom of the Opera on deck.
>>
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.
How is her prose so good, what the fuck? I didn't expect to be dazzled by excellence upon picking up what I thought would be a mediocre TikTok-grade novel. The rhythm, the language, she could be describing a grocery trip for 300 pages and I would still read.
Are the rest of her novels just as well written? Which one should I start next?
>>
>>25583374
Currently reading a collection of her short stories. She really deserves a higher reputation among mystery authors
>>
>>25581506
>Somefing Wicked Dis Way Comes
Pretty nostalgic and comfy so far.
>>
M.R. James Ghost stories - trying something new this year, got a bit tired of reading Lovecraft desu.
>>
Are there any actually terrifying horror books and stories? Not in modern media meme cultural monster way, but actually horrifying, dreadful and dark.
>>
Currently reading Dracula for the first time. Although I did try reading it about 20 years ago, but my reading comprehension was dogshit and I didn't even get to Harker's first night at the castle. I'm surprised by how much I'm enjoying it this time around.
>>
Faust
>>
>>25581463
Started reading Carrie yesterday. It's alright and King's trademark style is there, but it feels rather rudimentary at some points.
>>
>>25585249
my diary desu
>>
>>25585310
I haven’t read a single book by King, but I want to pick this one.
>>
>>25585336
My favourite King is The Dead Zone, but I admit I'm in the minority on this one. Horror doesn't really affect me, so I prefer his more psychological books rather than the "scary" ones.
>>
>>25585362
I always thought he does rather thrillers than horrors, and I guess I’m with you on that.
>>
>>25581463
Mainlander's Philosophy of Redemption
>>
>>25585336
The Pet Sematary gets creepy as fuck.
>>
>>25581463
I think I'll reread Reverend Insanity
>>
>>25581463
Not spooky at all but I've recently gotten into reading the White Rat books. I'm on Paladins Grace right now but I really enjoyed Swordheart.
T. Kingfisher definitely has a bit of a problem with incessantly writing her self inserts into books but the romance is fluffy, it has a managable amount of sex for Romantasy, and the setting at least has some level of worldbuilding.
>>
>>25581665
Tbh I enjoy bits and pieces of the Frankenstein novel but I struggle to appreciate the full package... It gets even more annoying if I try to digest the different adaptations which will inevitably get some things right but also completely shit the bed with several other themes.
>>
>>25586053
What makes you not appreciate the full package?
>>
>>25586063
I'll be clear that it's largely my own thought on it, I know it's almost certainly wrong and wasn't intended but it's a sticking point for me.
Like for me I don't appreciate just how quickly the monster turns to violence. I like when the monster is depicted as like a completely morally neutral being that is slowly ushered into killing Frankenstein's family as a way to get a reaction instead of how he just kills the blind man and his family right away.
I also do feel there's a few too many unnecessary segments of flattering romantic era writing. Too much talk of Frankenstein's travels and how lovely the mountains are and the landscape and architecture and everything... It exhausts me.
>>
>>25586078
He didn't kill the De Lacey family, he only burned their cottage after they abandoned it once he revealed himself to them. I do agree with you on your last point. The exhaustive description of his travels in the final act really staggered the pace. I didn't mind it that much early in the novel.
>>
>>25581463
I WAS going to read A Night in the Lonesome October (one chapter for each day of the month) but then I found out that the narrative is kinda gay and cringe and very redditlike and have thus done no such thing. Most Halloween-adjacent thing I've done all month is watch Return of the Living Dead last night. I was going to watch "In Search of Darkness" until I discovered that the fucking thing is like four plus hours long.

I've got some William Hope Hodgson collection books that should have been here today but its "Faggot Cocksucker I'm Sorry My Ancestors Slaughtered Your Worthless Asses Mister Indian Day" today. Guess I'll just watch Lair of the White Worm for the umpteenth time.
>>
>>25581471
Bitch
>>
>>25585249
No. Unless you're some kind of autistic wonderkind whose every book reading is a vivid hallucination that causes you to piss your fucking pants in terror then no book will ever be enough to truly terrify you. Too much of a disconnect.

Why do people keep asking this question?
>>
>>25586114
Idk man as a kid I read some pretty scary short stories. In one of them the scary entity were deers. Fucking grass munching doe eyed deers.
>>
>>25586138
Uhhhh... based. What was the deer story called?
>>
>>25586141
Where the deer are- Caroline b cooney
>>
>>25586114
I DISAGREE

THE MAJORITY OF THE POSTS ON THIS WEBSITE ARE SCARY TO AND BEYOND THE EXTEND THAT YOU PORTRAY

IT'S MAINLY SCARY HOW BAD THEY ARE
>>
>>25581463
Started with Tyll by Daniel Kehlmann.
Takes an old German trickster hero and sets him in a background of war and occultism. Not really a horror book outright but has some spooky stuff and dark magic and all that good stuff. I’d have to imagine it’s a fun book for history buffs too considering the jumping around to different figures of the time.
>>
>>25587097
Turn off the caps lock, cocksucker.
>>
>>25586109
Hoe.
>>
>>25583374
Sounds pretty cool from the wiki description. Is it spoopy?

YÓÚ ARE A TURNOFF

YOU GOT SO TURNED ON THAT YOU GOT TURNED OFF

WRITE AND TYPE IN THE STYLE THIS SCRIPT WAS INTENDED TO BE WRITTEN AND TYPED IN

OTHER SCRIPTUAL BEHAVIOURS CONCERNING THIS SCRIPT I FIND SCRIPTUALLY COWARDLY AND NOT DOING THE TRADITION ITS DUE HONOUR AND DILIGENCE

WERE I TO BE RAISED IN A DIFFERENT SCRIPTUAL TRADITION, I WOULD ALSO HAVE TO BE DILIGENT IN HONOURING THE SCRIPT, THE TOOL OF THE WORKMAN, THE MEANS BY WHICH I COMMUNICATE MY COMMUNICATIONS TO THE WORLD, AND THOSE WITHIN IT

I can also type like this but then we'd regress to bickering, slanter, banter, gossip, argueing, and bullshittery quite quickly. This scriptual style can be described as 'Who is on the top of the money hill when it comes to being meek in how he or she scripts? Who will be counted as the wolf among the meek, the first to be shepherded by the Good Shepherd for having proven his relentless meekness?'

YOU HAVE BEEN FOUND OUT

I SUGGEST YOU COOK YOURSELF A MEAL WITH CHICKEN TODAY, SO YOU ARE REMINDED OF WHAT A COCK ACTUALLY IS
>>
>>25587197
You are neither a genius and you can't even get it up, let alone cum, lol. Stupid fucking SPIC COCKSUCKER.
>>

CUMTRANNY MELTY! LOL!!
>>
>>25587205
FINALLY HE UNDERSTANDS HOW THIS SCRIPT WORKS

GOOD JOB ON THAT ONE, LETS CALL IT A MICRO-RESULT, BUT YOU'VE MORE PRACTICE TO DO UNTIL YOU ARE FLUENTLY SUBTLE AT IT, AND THEN MANY MORE STEPS UNTIL YOU BECOME RHETORICAL

AND ÍF YOU ARE UP TO THAT CHALLENGE

THEN I'D STILL NOT SUCK YOUR PENIS

BUT WHAT I WÍLL DO

IS TO REMEMBER THAT YOU COMMANDED ME TO SUCK YOUR COCK

Currently reading 'Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead' by Olga Tokarczuk. Will also read some stories from Flannery O'Connor's collection and from Daphne Du Maurier's 'Don't Look Now and Other Stories'. My bf got me a graphic novel of Dracula so I might reread that alongside it.
>>25585247
Are there any particular Lovecraft stories you'd recommend for spooky season anon? I loved 'The Colour Out of Space' and thought 'The Call of Cthulu' was okay
>>
>>25587458
YOU WILL HAVE TO WRITE THE 'LOVECRAFT' STORY THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO READ, YOURSELF

THE REST JUST WON'T CUT IT FOR YOU
>>
>>25581493
>...UNLESS YOU TYPE 'I HONOUR MY PARENTS' AND SEND THAT TO 10 OF YOUR FRIENDS SO THAT THEY DO THE SAME
>>
>>25587156
Depends on your definition of spoopy. It's certainly very gloomy and gothic.
>>
Masque Of The Red Death, saw it first as a Vincent Price movie, became my favourite work by Edgar Allan Poe. Got some other stuff to finish up first though
>>
>>25587212
backstory on this?
>>
>>25581463
I dunno what I have in my library that's spooky and don't really want to read Stephen King.
>>
>>25581471

THEY FUCKED HIS ASS
They all fucked Ohhh-P's ass
THEY FUCKED HIS ASS
It was a graveyard smash
THEY FUCKED HIS ASS
They did him in the ass
THEY FUCKED HIS ASS
AHH OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
>>
>>25585310
Update: finished it yesterday. Pretty good, it's obvious why it became so influential, but you can tell it's King's very early work and his style is still rough at places.
>>
>>25581471
>being so much of a pussy that other people talking about horror makes you personally offended
>>
>>25588205
Any Poe at the library? He’s pretty Halloweeny.
>>
>>25581463
I read Harvest Home. Fun to see how pervasive the influence of the Golden Bough was on even 70s horror lit, though having read it really did make most of the twists very obvious. Still a nice read though, three quarters of the book is mostly pure autumnal comfort, and the 70s gender war yonic fears were funny.
>>25586107
I enjoyed Lonesome October just fine, but yes, it is part of that pre-internet nerd culture that has been driven into the ground. It was a big influence on Cultist Simulator though, so I give it a pass.
