If you read a summary it will sound like the biggest tumblr piece of garbage you will ever read, and it is, but it's also unironically brilliant.
>>
>>25581836
>brilliant
I don't see it. Maybe I'm spoiled by the likes of Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth, Melville, Tennyson, Yeats, Dickinson, Eliot, Pound etc., but her poetry just doesn't have any ornament, rhythm or striking imagery to it. It reads like a long tumblr post to me. It doesn't even feel that strange when compared to Lispector or Stein.

The Nobel prize is a glowop

>write something about gays
>be gay, woman, black or any combo
Enjoy your accolades

And that could very much be her best book too lol. An ideal work for college students, I guess. Poetrylets are easy to fool.

I will never ever ever get the appeal of English poetry
>>
>>25581967
This and timblresque shit like Rupi Kaur isn't actual English poetry. Proper English poetry is incredibly beautiful and moving.

Anon's got a point. The excerpt posted is trash

Have you actually read Autobiography of Red or are you just judging by random excerpts you found online?
The book has a lot more subtle and complex things going on than an excerpt is going to let on. It's written almost childlishly simply and awkwardly but this is just a foil for what is actually happening. It is a very good book. I'm sorry if you don't see it.

Anne Carson has literally nothing to do with Rupi Kaur.

I tried to be as comprehensive with the list of poets that I read and liked more as I could.
I left out Blake, I guess. I think he's a poor poet, but I still like him more than Carson.
Hell, even Pynchon's poetry easily beats anything I've seen from her:

Thus, reaching for some flower on my table,
I know the cool mosaic of my room
Begin its slow, inhibitory dissolve
Around the bloom, the stimulus, the need
That brighter burns, as brightness, quickly sucked
From objects all around, now concentrates
(Yet less than blinding), focuses to flame.
Whilst there yet, in the room’s hypnotic evening,
The others lurk—the books, the instruments,
The old man’s clothes, an old gorodki stick,
Glazed now but with their presences. Their spirits,
Or memories I kept of where they were,
Are canceled, for this moment, by the flame:
The reach toward the frail and waiting flower . . .
And so, one of them—pen, or empty glass—
Is knocked from where it was, perhaps to roll
Beyond the blank frontiers of memory . . .
Yet this, be clear, is no “senile distraction,”
But concentrating, such as younger men
Can easily and laughing dodge, their world
Presenting too much more than one mean loss—
And out here, eighty-three, the cortex slack,
Excitatory processes eased to cinders
By Inhibition’s tweaking, callused fingers,
Each time my room begins its blur I feel
I’ve looked in on some city’s practice blackout
(Such as must come, should Germany keep on
That road of madness). Each light, winking out . . .
Except at last for one bright, stubborn bloom
The Wardens cannot quench. Or not this time.

I downloaded the entire book from Anna's Archive, read a few excerpts, and I'm just not feeling it.
Excerpts are a great way to judge any author's writing, and it is doubly so for poets. Poetry, at least in my view, is meant immediately to awe you with its language and imagery.
Long accumulation of scenes is the realm of novels, which is partly why I dislike them as a genre (minus a few exceptions like James). I can see that she added a "novel in verse", so that could be one of the reasons for my dislike.
>>
>>25582148
The book is much more a novel than a poem. She is a classicist and it has much more to do with greek storytelling.

You're going in with the wrong approach. Carson writes in verse and she's, in my opinion, pretty good at it, but you're right that as a poet alone she isn't one of the greats. Her appeal lies elsewhere. She must be understood as some sort of bricolage artist who employs verses (and sometimes paintings) instead of objects, and not verses just because. As a classicist, Carson's fixation with Greek poetry doesn't have to do much with authenticity, but with how these old verses, as if they were worn objects (and in a very literal sense they are), have come to us, as fragments, as things we can't fully access and we must wonder at, and then she grabs modern words to form a collage of verses that resonates with Greek poetry as a found object. Personally I think she's brilliant. There are a million ways her work could be incredibly gimmicky and annoying, but instead, to me at least, it comes off as such an earnest, tender offering to the reader, like something written by an alien who loves human literature and is trying his best to write a version of it the best he can.

I also compared her to an alien writing in another thread.

This is the third time I've seen Carson's writing described as alien in the threads currently on the catalog. She's actually that good? The Nobel Committee got this one right?
