I'm into literature, but from what I see the current studies are more political and utterly fucking moronic (feminism, diversity/africanization, left-wing politics and asinine interpretations).
Is this the last place for me to ask about literary studies? I know, but I don't give a fuck because at least you faggots know and care better than redditards and mongoloids from goodreads and other websites plagued with YA novels and shit.
So tell me, e/lit/es: Do you have anything? Any curriculum or way to study literature seriously? Something to get into the classics, the Renaissance and the 19th and 20th centuries? Any tips to focus harder on those books?

read new criticism (death of the author: primacy of the text). It is an American mid 20th century text focused mode.

Also Aristotle's poetics.

Vergil is political
Dante is political
Shakespeare is political
Milton is political

I think OP meant anything that wasn't affected by leftism or any movement related to or influenced by it, and/or otherwise remains true to literary studies from an aesthetic point of view.
But I also like to guess that he read a couple of stuff from Harold Bloom. In other words, the retard should've thought better before posting. Which leads me to...

Some books within literary studies from, let's say, the 1940s or 1950s had political messages or were influenced by the politics of that era. Don't think that any one of them is free from it. Shit, Ulysses has themes of nationalism, and it's still considered the best book ever written in the 20th century.

They are in fucking up the classics too, changing classical pronouns to be more inclusive and align with 21st century values of equity and genderfluidity, and turning the Greeks into a platform for homosexuality, genderfluidity, radical democracy, and witchery. Its just a longer way to get to the same problem, and by the time he is fluent in classics the books and reading will be totally corrupted.

>to study literature seriously
Your study should not be serious ('Candor is the only wile' --Emily Dickinson), leave 'sincerity' soi-disant to the 'social scientists' and their hard science models with their penchant for the word 'rigor'
If you want help and encouragement with Shakespeare read a G. Wilson Knight volume, Spurgeon's Shakespeare's Imagery (or Tuve's Elizabethan and Metaphysical Imagery), but start with Goddard's charming The Meaning of Shakespeare volumes as you make your way through the plays-- and make sure you're reading Pelican editions (of the plays) as you make your way through. All of these will arouse your interest, 'hook you,' help you.
A good introduction to both 'the Greeks' and Renaissance are Burckhardt's books. If you want help with Homer read Otto's The Homeric Gods, Brann's Homeric Moments, or if you want something more dry, more trustworthy, there's always Burkert's Homeric Religion (a good book nonetheless). For Virgil start W. F. Jackson Knight's Roman Vergil, the best book on him in English by an obsessed (though controlled) maniac who knows everything worth knowing about him, and his verse. I could go but'll stop here. Good luck

OKAY KID, I'LL MAKE YOU A NO-NONSENSE CURRICULUM

1. GRAB A BOOK YOU HAVE ALREADY FINISHED WHILE YOU WERE ON YOUR ASS OR THE THINNEST BOOK YOU CAN FIND IN YOUR HOUSE - EVEN A SINGULAR A4 SHEET WITH TEXT WILL DO
2. TAKE IT TO THE KITCHEN AND LAY THE BOOK ON THE KITCHEN COUNTERTOP
3. STUDY THAT BOOK FRONT-TO-BACK, INCLUDING PAGE NUMBERS, I'M TALKING ABOUT YOU HAVING STUDIED THE BOOK 100%
4. REPEAT
5. REPEAT
6. REPEAT
7. REPEAT
8. REPEAT
9. REPEAT
10. REPEAT
11. REPEAT
12. REPEAT
13. REPEAT

CONGRATULATIONS: YOU NOW HAVE STUDIED THE THE TEXT 10 TIMES AND FULLY DESERVE A 10/10 MARK

THÉN WHAT?

KEEP DOING THAT METHOD, SWITCH UP THE TEXTS IF YOU WANT TO

EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO TACKLE THE TEXTS LETTER-BY-LETTER, CHARACTER-BY-CHARACTER, PARAGRAPH-BY-PARAGRAPH, YOU WÍLL SEE ACHIEVEMENT IN YOUR WORK

THE HIGHER YOU WANT TO GO WITH LITERATURE, THE WORKIER IT WILL BE

EVEN IF YOU ARE ONLY FED - IN YOUR OPINION - IDIOTIC TEXTS, STUDY THEM ANYWAY, AND LEARN TO SEE WHERE THE IDIOCIES AND THE FALLACIES IN THE TEXTS ARE

YOU CAN ALWAYS LEARN, BOTH FROM OTHERS' FAILURES, AS WELL AS THEIR MISTAKES

MY ADVICE MIGHT BE ONE BIG FAILURE, WHO THE FLIP AM í TO KNOW? BUT IN THE TINY CASE OF A CHANCE THAT IT IS A SUCCESS:

THEN

WE'RE ALL GOING TO MAKE IT

Bruno Snell, The Discovery of the Mind
E. R. Curtius, European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages
Arthur Lovejoy, The Great Chain of Being
Johan Huizinga, The Autumn of the Middle Ages
Erich Auerbach, Mimesis (his book on Dante might be worth checking out but I have not read it)
Angus Fletcher (the dead scholar with that name), Allegory: The Theory of a Symbolic Mode
Frances Yates, The Occult Philosophy in the Elizabethan Age (despite the title its concerns are mostly literary, moreso than the titles of hers most frequently mentioned here: The Art of Memory and Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition-- both excellent, as is most all her work
My favorite Harold Bloom volume is probably The Daemon Knows; my favorite Helen Vendler is On Extended Wings: Wallace Stevens' Longer Poems (very helpful, this one)

WHAT'S GREAT-LY DISAPPOINTING IS THAT YOU CAN NOT TYPE A GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT ENGLISH SENTENCE

AND WHAT YOU MEAN BY YOUR QUOTATION MARKS IS DEBATABLE

ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COLLECTIVE CIVILIZATION CAN DO FOR YOU, ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COLLECTIVE CIVILIZATION

BECAUSE YOU'RE GOING TO NEED TO CONTRIBUTE TO IT IN A BETTER IF YOU WANT TO NOT FEEL LIKE A BURDEN TO SOME, A RIGHT AND JUST FEELING AT YOUR LEVEL OF ENGLISH GRAMMAR

Get yourself one of these and avoid the post-colonial/feminist/etc. essays. It’s actually a valuable tool if you want to study literature seriously

Also the Norton Anthology of English Literature covers a vast amount of early modern stuff, albeit mostly excerpted. But it’s a good way to find stuff you like before committing to buying and reading the entire Fairie Queene or whatever
>>
>>25587381
I've seen an Arden but I've never looked through one; I like the Pelican essays, and the full character names in the plays, but I'm sure the Arden's fine

its just a goddamn niggerbook for fuck sake - none of these things are sacrilege or something. I always find academia, university, or whatever institution-literature teaching to be futile and extremely retarded because of this entire rationalization and linearity obsession fiasco.
Read whatever you like, distill the theme, pick your next reading out of those interests, and that's it. To put it simply: you dont have to start with plato if you dont have any interest with plato, but you have to start with wimpy kid if you have any interest with wimpy kid novel

Excellent, this is why I still lurk here. All new to me except Huizinga. Thanks a lot, anon.

Yale has a recorded 2009 introduction to literary theory if you want to get a decent survey of some of the areas a specialties. There are lectures on the ones you don't like, but you can either skip those or listen to them to at least get an idea of what you're complaining about from the academic angle. Some of it can seem a little schizoidal, but a broad overview can help you find theory traditions you identify with more strongly and go from there.

>Read whatever you like, distill the theme, pick your next reading out of those interests, and that's it
>he’s a themefag
Lmao. God forbid people actually study literary techniques to understand how a text works, rather than merely what it talks about. Why bother reading the book at all when you could find a book tuber talking about the themes?

IMAGE: TL;DR

I WILL TELL YOU HOW TO INFLUENCE IN A FRACTION OF THE TIME IT TAKES TO STUDY THAT OVERDESIGNED IMAGE OF YOURS

WHAT ÍS TO INFLUENCE? DISSECT THE WORD
>IN + FLUENCE
>IN + FLOW + VERB-CONJUGATION
>INFLOWING
>TO FLOW IN

WHAT 'FLOWS IN'?

>WELL, LOOK IN YOUR HOUSE! WHAT FLÓWS IN? YOUR SINK! UTILITIES IN YOUR BATHROOM! YOUR ELECTRICITY! YOUR CREATIVE SPIRIT!
>THEN LETTETH THAT FLOW, FLOWER
>BY LETTING THE INFLOWING FLOW IN, YOU'LL BE HAVING A BIG INFLOW IN NO TIME

TL;DR?
>TURN ON THE DAMN SINK TAP AND KEEP IT OPEN
>JAM YOUR TOILET UNTIL ALL THE SHIT IN THE PIPES IS NO MORE
>EXPORT CLEAN WATER
>IF ANYONE TRIES TO BILL YOU FOR LETTING A RIVER FLOW, STAY POLITE, BUT FIRMLY MAKE AN APPEAL TO THE FACT THAT ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER IS A UNIVERSAL HUMAN RIGHT
>GOOD JOB, YOU ARE NOW AN INFLUENCER, TRUE TO THE WORD, WITHOUT CLOWNING YOURSELF OUT ON THE INTERNET AND WITHOUT ALL THE INTERNET DRAMA
>THAT WASN'T SO HARD, WAS IT?

HERE, I SAVED YOU ON SOME CRYPTIC INTERNET LINGO

IF GOD FORBADE IT, I SUGGEST YOU DON'T DO IT

HOWEVER, IF GOD REVEALED SOMETHING TO YOU, YOU ARE PROBABLY ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN WHATEVER WAS REVEALED - OTHERWISE IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE POSSIBLE TO, WITH, AND FOR YOU

HOW MORE IS TO BE REVEALED TO US, HOW THE WORLD IS OPENED UP TO US, WE ALL HAVE OUR OWN IDEAS ABOUT THAT, AND THAT IS FINE
