American fantasy writers have a problem where they think evil is more complicated than it is. I think this mainly comes from living around blacks, there has to be a deeper cause to evil, and there really isn't. Tolkien understands that evil just is, Tolkien likely never even met a black person. GRRM thinks everything is morally grey, GRRM has met blacks.
tolkien: catholicgrrm: atheist
Tolkienfags once again showing themselves to be bottom of the barrel in fantasy. Comparable to Sandersonfags.
>>25584796>American fantasy writers have a problem where they think evil is more complicated than it is. I think this mainly comes from living around blacksYou're fucking retarded, it's because of freemasonic morality.
>>25584796You can tell someone is a genre fic only retard when they think Tolkien isn’t modern and think moral complexity is a 20th century invention
>>25584796I mean it's not just evil. Every good character has to have flaws unless they are a minority—these can be completely flawless. And if the bad guy is a minority, then they must be shown to have been mistaken about something or another and not just purely evil.
>>25584796> I think this mainly comes from living around blacks, there has to be a deeper cause to evilWhat is that even supposed to mean? That non-black racists cannot potray evil as it it because they see themselves in it, and so it must be more complicated than it looks?
>>25585003Black people being scum isn't due to their genetics it's due to [libtard causes]. That is the entire root of American society, evil doesn't exist
>>25585011Obsessed
Tolkien deeply regretted making his baddies so black and white
>>25584796The evil characters are motivated by greed, power, or personal vengeance. That's not complicated and you obviously didn't read these novels.
>>25585011Think about it. It would make sense since racism is associated more with America. So America writers would want to obfuscate evil inorder, as if it's complex factors and not simple plain evil that leads to racism against blacks
>>25584796Actually LotR is more "morally gray" because the so-called good guys end up causing elves to go extinct by destroying the ring
its true, evil isn't complicated. it's very, very easy to identify and point at.
>>25584796It is not that they think evil is more complicated than it is, it is that they think evil doesn't exist. Fantasy has always been escapist in nature, which attracted outcasts and the logical end point is a Terry Prachett who argues that saying goblins and other monsters being automatically evil is coded language for othering minorities. There is something to be said about fear of the other in how fantasy races are portrayed. You can tell how JK Rawling feels about Jews by how she portrays goblins or how Tolkein portrays Dwarves. Even the old Brothers Grimms had a story or two that could be seen as antisemetic. The problem is you have a lot of readers with victim complexes who go no no no no we can't just have an evil race they are probably secretly good and the normal humans are the actual bad ones. Why can't we have comfy fantasy stories about a lesbian ogre witch who falls in love with a lesbian minotaur and they run a bookshop cafe with a cat.
>>25584796Define evil or STFU.
>>25586119well, it doesn’t make much sense for a race to be evil unless evil forces were involved in its creation (granted, they usually are), or it got tied up with evil somehow en masse otherwise, what? - a race has just randomly evolved to be evil according to The Objective Standard (tm) of good and evil? ex. predators are objectively evil? Maybe herbivores too, and only plants are good?
>>25584796they have a problem with being evil>>25584804tolkien preferred aesthetics to substance
>>25586119Tolkien was a philosemite who was trying to rehabilitate dwarves. In German mythology they're obviously an antisemitic allegory
>>25584796Have you actually read the books? GRRM writes villains like the bad guys in a Saturday morning cartoon. The only "complex" villain in the whole story is Tywin, and that's only because his actions arguably saved more people than they killed.
>>25586563>In German mythology they're obviously an antisemitic allegoryLOL, dwarves predate any knowledge of the Jews. They're earth-spirits. The earth is where all precious metals and gemstones are found. Hence dwarves are gold-diggers: rich, greedy, materialistic etc.
>>25586607Tolkien himself acknowledged dwarves are a Jewish archetype. They're villainous in most German stories
>>25586675Tolkien literally worshipped a jew and called the jews a "fine race" when questioned by the NSDAP about his jewish links. He isn't an authority on this matter.
>>25584796>I think this mainly comes from living around blacks, there has to be a deeper cause to evilThis makes no sense, living around blacks ought to have taught them the exact opposite, that the evil are just born ontologically evil and there's no depth to them. >>25586119 is correct (except when he says you can tell how JK Rowling feels about Jews based on how Tolkien portrays dwarves, that makes no sense).
>>25584796I have yet to talk to anyone who says evil is obvious who can also define clearly what evil is and what it is not. 95% just start barking insults when questioned. In fact, I have gotten closer to a working definition for evil talking to people who don't believe in concept, than talking to those who do believe in it.
>>25584796This is an interesting argument to be made when in reality the heroes and villains in ASOIAF are pretty clear for the most part. Apart from like, Jaime’s personal journey of redemption there’s not much moral ambiguity among the main cast
>>25586281>>25586101
>>25584796>Tolkien likely never even met a black personYou have a baby's brain if you really believe this
>>25587989op is a failure troll but you just know there are people out there who think and say this without irony
