While I loved Sot-Weed Factor, this book got really tedious about halfway through and it's nowhere near as long. Any other Barth works I should check out?
so he's like part boy part goat or what? he wrote a whole book on this? what's the like problem that makes the plot?
>>25589018He's half goat and half boy. There's no reason for it. There's no problem that makes the plot really either. It's a long book where the entire world is a university and there are a bunch of puns along those lines and it's supposed to be a joke little critique of academia. It was actually a big hit for Barth when it came out but no one remembers why and no one reads it any more.
>>25588544Lost in the Funhouse was good. I teach from that whenever I end up doing post-45 lit classes and sometimes in Brit Lit II to teach postmodernism when I don't have enough time to do a novel. I liked Last Voyage of Somebody the Sailor--some anon here actually recommended it to me. Chimera was good, I preferred it to GGB. Barth is always very self-indulgent and fairly one-note: sex and sex jokes, bawdy puns, anxiety about impotence as a metaphor for impotence as a writer/storyteller, Greek myth and the 1001 nights. >>25589023Pretty much this. He was very popular, now he's an author people who read a lot of maximalist pomo literature eventually read after they've done all the big names. I think he was a good fit for his moment but not one of the authors who transcended it.
>>25589145I said in another thread that I read an interview with him and he said something like "When I sit down to write a book I'd love to write a Faulkner book or a Steinbeck book but by the time I'm done I've written another John Barth book."Those weren't the authors he used but I don't remember who he used. The rest of the quote is close enough. Will probably never find the interview again.
