i'm reading this edition
>what's /lit/ opinion on FaustThere's no beginning and no end to this question.
>>25587717why are you like this
>>25587691I enjoyed it but for being the bedrock of modern German lit and being as widely influential as it is, I found it a tad underwhelming. Granted, I read it in translation and have to be missing out on the poetry side of it. I have to imagine the form is a large part of its reputation because the story itself, while entertaining, didn’t strike me as deep as people say it is.Or maybe I just didn’t grasp it as well as I think. What do YOU think so far?
>>25587719I meant to say "the answer to that question" instead of "this question". I'll just say that this play would be better suited as a movie than in a live performance.
>>25587728honestly i just started reading it, i really loved the start where the manager/clown/poet start a fight, i loved mephisto was being sarcastic in front of God, finally i am reading the Night chapter, the spirit called Faust a worm and not his equal and wagner appeared!>i thought this is richard wagner but realized he was living much later than Goethe, he was in love with Faust and wrote a piece for it!
>>25587691amazing, second part is underrated. bith great. read it once a year
Part 1 is good. Part 2 was too philosophical and forgot to tell a story. It's not really worth reading if you're reading an English translation. Marlowe wrote a good version of Faust based on Goethe's.
>>25587728faust is just too fucking much for people because goethe basically invented literary calculus. it’s not a cozy little play, it's a hyper-dense, constantly moving galaxy of pure, unadulterated autistic striving that hits your brain the exact same way a bach fugue or leibniz/newton infinitesimals do, where a single mind somehow maps out the absolute limits of infinity and leaves you feeling like a retarded peasant trying to read the source code of reality.
>>25587691there are so many prologues and prefaces and introductions and dedications that i never got to the poem partfuck it
>>25587691retarded and boring. all the retards who say it's deep and philosophical are pseud larpers. werther was fine tho.
>>25587854this
I read it and instantly memoryholed it
