Just finished Lucan's Pharsalia, a less known ancient epic, was pretty awesome. Easy to read for an ancient epic thanks to very oratory writing, yet at the same time extremelly difficult to understand because of the required historical knowledge.
The part with the witch Erichtho is truly one of the GOATs. Depictions of Pompey and Caesar are also very cool, Pompey as the one reluctantly pushed by fate and Caesar as a force of nature - more destructive lightning than man.
Favorite passages overall:
>Roman senator forcing delphi oracle to deliver prophecy, he recognizes she is making shit up when it makes too much sense
>Erichtho passage, where Sextus Pompey consults the witch Erichtho who through necromancy foretells future
>Caesar's soldiers on a raft get intercepted by Pompey's forces and commit mass suicide
>the beginning where Lucanus describes the whole known world (china included)
>Pompey and his armies after defeat at Pharsalus discussing where to go (passage talking shit about Parthians)
Here's some shitty english cover.
