I've started reading La Recherche, and for weeks I've been thinking about how I desperately want to ravish this sickly French aesthete in his cork-lined room. As soon as I think about him sweaty and desperate with a fever, it's over. I'm asthmatic myself, so we wouldn't have any stamina, which, I find, is wonderfully intimate. I've started thinking that I should write my thesis on him, purely for access. They'd pay me to spend years poring over his works, correspondence, and medical history, with the additional bonus that it would be considered respectable scholarship. I'd give up anything to lay my head beside his and smoke the hallucinogenic asthma cigarettes together.
