>I feel like the 21st century has forgotten him and overcome his influence
Zizek.

Oh, my sweet, Summer child
Has our fair century overcome the influence of Marx, Hitler, and the Bible as well? That atp being part of the air we breathe could hoodwink any youngster into believing that he's simply not around, I get. No need to read him because he's everywhere, true, but how do you suppose he even came to mind?
My friends, I come before you today to proclaim that Freud is dead, and his little dog Carl, too. The only true Freudian that ever lived died of mouth cancer in London a year or so before the bombs dropped there, wiping out the influence of that strangest of cities forever, too. Long life to anime, t*k t*k, and pronouns disguised as either common nouns or nonsense words! Hip hip? Hooray! Hip hip? Hooray! Hip hip? Hooray!
>>
I want to read Anti-Oedipus. Is Freud required reading or can I just jump right in?
>>

Try at least reading Wiki / SEP / IEP on Freudian practices first so you don't shit the bed on specialized language.
>>
>>25595974
Idk about value, but it was a satisfying read for me, you may like it if you are in for the journey.
>>
>>25596079
>value
If you want Value then read Capitalism & Schizophrenia ha ha ha.

Klages mogs him
>>
The early days psych guy that is the most under read is William James. The most practical man in philosophy.
>>
>>25595974
I read lots of Freud. Some of his theories are utterly bullshit, such as the Oedipus Complex and the Death of the Primordial Father. Just absolutely dumb.

The only way I can defend him is that he puts you in a certain mood that expands your mind, and he's imaginative. In other words, he's more literary rather than scientific. However, I will say sometimes he's really compelling, interesting, and actually correct. I recall Civilization and its Discontents was short and very good - a very dark and raw image of humanity.

>The most practical man in philosophy.
That supposed to be a good thing? I don't know this guy, but what this description sounds like in practice is he fixates on ethics thereby neglecting metaphysics, epistemology, and aesthetics.
This is remiscent of stoicism and other schools of the hellenistic period.
Which, at the end of the day, amounts to little more than self-help.

Lacan uses the phallus like nobody else.
>>
>>25596144
That was certainly the reaction to him by many of his contemporaries. But he's smart about his practicality, not clumsy.

He's definitely one of people most responsible for the foundations of modern psychology. His brother was the novelist Henry James.
>>
>>25596156
Yeah but Henry was more important than William.

Freud shits all over Jung.

That is not a metaphor.

>Any value in reading
No

>amounts to little more than self-help.
The greatest thinkers of the 20th century produced little more than self-help themselves.

Freud's ideas that still hold up:
>A modern take on the well known symbolism and word play of dreams. Essential to access Jung's views on dreams, which are better
>Development of Sabina Spielrein's death drive, as a dual to the pleasure principle (which is more obvious), explaining self-destructiveness, repetition compulsion, traumatic dreams
>An older, philosophical conception of psychopathology. Nancy McWilliam's Psychoanalytic Diagnosis(a developed portrayal of Freudian pathology) is a useful comparison to something like DSM.
>His wholly unique sexual theory, portraying human sexuality has unconsciously arising within children for a long time before puberty, essentially since birth

If you find his sexual theory off-putting or over-emphasized, you ought to consider Freud, as Jung put it, "entranced by the numinous quality of sex", which is real. Sexuality is absolutely as potent as Freud's (occasionally deranged) theories seem to imply. And the 21st century only makes this more evident.
>>

>ideas
His influence, though?
--the 'sexual revolution'
--talk-therapy culture
--the multi-trillion dollar health and wellness industries
James may have written a more useful general psychology (for the 'lay reader' aar) but Freud even more than either Darwin or Marx is at ground zero of 'modern times,' culturally speaking
>>
>>25596710
All the more reason to read him.
>>
>>25597971
Agreed. Plus, The Interpretation of Dreams is rather fun, and The Lectures and New Lectures not at all difficult
>>25596293
Strange how latter Death Drive Freud is all but completely ignored: where the game changes, where he's at his most interesting
>>
>>25596122
Klages was a bit of a weirdo
>>
>>25595974
Especially at this point.
