I struggle to conceptualise death as any kind of a relief from suffering because surely if there's no perception in death surely I won't experience it being over? So for me it'll be the same (to all intents and purposes, only) as if whatever I last felt had never stopped?

I don't think I've ever heard Bataille talk about continuity and I've read most of his books

It’s a return to the inorganic exteriority from whence we came, ie. A return to the absolute lack of sense and awareness in inert materiality. It’s not a relief from suffering as much as being completely absolved of the faculties that make suffering possible.

Arguably it’s just a retread of early medieval ideas about the cyclical nature of life and death, albeit coloured by the influence of Freud and the notion of the death drive. Bataille is still great tho
