>What is /wng/ — Web Novel General?
A general for readers and authors involved or interested in the growing phenomenon of 'web novels', serialized English fiction posted to websites such as: Royal Road, Webnovel, Scribblehub, Wattpad, Archive of Our Own, Spacebattles, HFY, various personal author websites, and more

>Why read web novels?
Not for prose or tight editing or deep themes, frankly. As a whole, web novels are infamous for content sprawl and pacing issues. If you enjoy having millions of words to sink your teeth into to get to know the world and characters, though, you may be interested. Keeping up with other readers on a weekly basis to discuss the story's events unfolding is another perk, in the same way discussing an ongoing TV show might be.

>Why write web novels?
Ease of access & potential for Patreon earnings. Many successful authors gain an audience on their website of choice and funnel their readers into a Patreon. See graphtreon.com/top-patreon-creators/writing for an idea of what some are earning.
Also, once an author has earned a fanbase, transitioning into an Amazon self-publishing career is several orders of magnitude easier than starting 'dry'.

Doing some research and there's a fuckton variants of dragons. No wonder they can work on everything. There's always one type that can fit in anything.
>>
>>25601493
There are only few types, real dragons, elemental dragons and various creatures with some dragon ancestry (wyrms, serpents etc.)

RR tells you to remove political content from your story or else. What do?
>>
>>25601691
i'd have to remove my story, the idea of brutally murdering people is a key part of my story.
>>
>>25601691
only if it references real world stuff
>>
>>25601691
They don't do that they tell you to remove the specific parts but that author had a melty for having to follow the same rules everyone else has to and deleted his story.
>>
>>25601691
chances are your politics will fly under the radar unless you get millions of views. I was worried people would get upset that there's a scene where a woman makes out with a little boy while he's asleep, but my readership was small enough that everyone turned a blind eye.

How do the writers here usually price their advance chapters? I've seen a few on RR charge upwards of like $10-15 for sets of advance chapters.
>>
>>25601854
Probably an audio-fag that misunderstood something and then later realized they were wrong. You can turn any story on RR into audio with a browser extension.
>>
>>25601691
I've be gravely sad but it just means I'll have to put up a chapter notice that the story as it is on RR is being axed, and then I'll post links to the 6 other platforms I posted it to. The really sad thing is nearly no one will be converted over to any of them.

0$. With a I think a 2 or 3$ option expressively stating it has no support chapters and its just for general support.

I tried reading Clara Casewell finally and it had the biggest red flag for knowing when a story is going to be shit: the character interactions for a dramatic event weren't realistic in the first few chapters
Girl tries to kill herself and the head maid is like "ok cool get cleaned up". the villainess, her best friend, addresses it a bit more, but also in a super weird way as if the author knows it needs to be addressed but also wants to brush it aside
had high hopes based on the rating but nah, very bad first impression, will not continue. How can I trust how the author will handle any future dramatic event now?

Hi /wng/! I'm looking for recommendations for, or at least directions towards, magical girl stories.

There don't really seem to be -that- many posted to royalroad. Are there any other websites you'd recommend checking out?

Is the genre situation really so bad you have to "recommend" some bottom of the barrel dregs from novelpia?
>>
>>25602074
Literally explained in text lol
In the short term the original maid gave the villainess the poison they're on trial for. So the head maid who is loyal to the villainess's family is pissed off about that and sees original maid trying to kill herself as a cowardly way for her to run from responsibility for the shit she pulled.
It's also shown later that the maid who tried to kill herself was a cooky religious lunatic that almost nobody in the house liked.
>>
>>25602622
>bottom of the barrel dregs from novelpia?
That wasn't the bottom of the barrel, lmao. That was a curated list.

If you want the bottom of the barrel I can give it to you. Check out Executive Mesgaki in a Gender-Reversed World with Magical Girls.

Executive Mesgaki in a Gender-Reversed World with Magical Girls is bottom of the barrel because a chapter is missing from the translation several hundred chapters in and there's a special place in hell for series that do that shit.

Most magical girl stories are incorrectly tagged on RR. I'm debating whether or not to tell the mods of the site so they can force remove it off stories that are girl focused with magic
>>
>>25602752
>Most magical girl stories are incorrectly tagged on RR
I regret to inform you that "magical girl" as a genre just means girl with magic powers and is applied to everything from sentai adjacent works to horror to slice of life to military/police dramas to bog standard fantasy about bog standard witches.

You could call the next fucking Witcher game mahou shoujo and you wouldn't be wrong.
>>
>>25602837
You are overly pedantic
>>
Clara Casewell is a magical girl
>>
>>25602851
We're talking about genres. Pedantry is the point. The only time I've seen fuck ups with the magical girl tag are when it's a trap or an all magic is actually just sufficiently advanced science series.

magical girls have transformation sequences
>>
Clara Casewell transforms from a lawyer into a maid.
>>
>>25603045
Her soul is inhabiting a different body, that's transmigration
>>
>>25602632
I could forgive the head maids reaction. The villainess was the real issue.
>>
>>25603026
Magical girls pre-date transformation sequences by decades. Sailor Moon did not invent magical girls.
>>
>>25603008
Ok. But that doesn't mean any and every female character with magic powers counts as a "magical girl" story. This is some "native isekai"-level stupidity. The genre is defined by very specific tropes and conventions that the audience expects to see.
>>
>>25603077
i will excuse legacy magical girls but modern ones should have them. otherwise they are just female mages.
>>
>>25602570
The villainess is her best friend and she did care, but in a weird brushed aside way. It read super unrealistic and amateurish. Did u even read my post
>>
>>25603079
>This is some "native isekai"-level stupidity
Requiring transformations in magical girl stories is closer to being "native isekai" given it's a post-facto change to an already established genre.
>>
>Magical girl (Japanese: 魔法少女, Hepburn: mahō shōjo) is a subgenre of Japanese fantasy media (including anime, manga, light novels, and live-action media) centered on young girls, who possess magical abilities, which they typically use through an ideal alter ego into which they can transform.[1][2]
>The genre emerged in 1962 with the manga Himitsu no Akko-chan, followed by Sally the Witch in 1966.[3] A wave of similar anime produced in the 1970s led to majokko (魔女っ子; lit.'little witch') being used as a common term for the genre. In the 1980s, the term was largely replaced by "magical girl", reflecting the new popularity of shows produced by other studios, including Magical Princess Minky Momo and Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel.
>In the 1990s, Sailor Moon redefined the genre by combining "transforming hero" elements from live-action tokusatsu hero shows. The growth of late-night anime in the early 2000s led to a demographic shift for the genre, where series with more mature themes such as Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (2004) were created and marketed towards an older male audience.

There you go. Look how easy that was
>>
>>25603123
Good job proving exactly my point in that transformations are post-facto to the genre with that third paragraph. So requiring transformations is native isekai bullshit.
>>
>>25603128
I'm not who you were responding to and I don't even know what "native isekai bullshit" means
I just find it absurd when people bicker about definitions that you can settle in seconds by googling so I did it for both of you

I notice that I can't take certain works seriously, particularly those where the "Hand of the Author" is moving the pieces around too obviously, without bothering to "cover them with the curtains first" so to speak.

I notice that with Chinese works, this is usually in the way the author openly allows all the patterns to show, making no effort to hide that this is the fifth "young master shows up, causes trouble for MC, and gets face slapped" loop of filler.

Whereas in Japanese works, it's more to do with the rules of the world itself. Japanese writers really like openly using arbitrary and completely unbelievable rules with no justifications, expecting the reader to simply accept them. E.g. the "kill a saint kill a demon" rule of FMD Muramasa, or the entire power system in JJK. The entire genre of Death Game stories is an embodiment of this.

In Western works, the most common form of this is the inability to allow the narrative to take itself seriously. Whedonisms, reddit writing so to speak, and also an insistence on very specific tropes like "found family" and "sparing the villain." It's part the Chinese tendency to allow the mechanisms to show, and part a unique western mental irony-poisoning (And to an extent ideological poisoning, as western authors especially strongly shy away from portraying various things they find ideologically dangerous or distasteful even if the setting should have them). Only a Western author will have a medieval knight talk in pukey therapy-speak or have a villain simultaneously enact genocide and then have a soapbox moment where he kills a subordinate for using le heckin slur or whatever.
