Are almost all Family gatherings a humiliation ritual and dick measuring contest? In my experience, family gatherings follow a predictable pattern. Relatives consistently engage in conflict and disagreement, frequently showcase their recent purchases(house, boat, car, watch, gold etc), highlight their children's and nieces' exceptional beauty and accomplishments, recount travel experiences, emphasize their multilingual abilities and muh fucking politics.
We meet a couple of times per year so why should i care about your new car?
>muh small talk

>In this space of which they are so afraid, human beings learn how to live and to die; in their mental space, separation, distance and suffering are born. There is little to add to this: the lover hears his beloved’s voice over mountains and oceans; over mountains and oceans a mother hears the cry of her child. Love binds, and it binds forever. Good binds, while evil unravels. Separation is another word for evil; it is also another word for deceit. All that exists is a magnificent interweaving, vast and reciprocal.

What's funny is when I was reading that particular Murakami novel and carrying it around in public, I got approached by four different women at various points asking about it. Makes me wonder if women are always wanting to approach me and just don't have the excuse or in without a book with such a memorable, biting name.

Many such cases. The only people who were around my hospital bed after my suicide attempt were my mother, father and sister. Granted, not many people knew it happened at the time, but the fact that not even my best friend of twenty years or so was there really put things in perspective for me.
>>
>>25607593
Bless you. For what it's worth, in all my time of having friends, and I've had lots of them over the years, I've learned that friendship... really doesn't mean much. I've seen multiple childhood friendships fall apart, I've had people cut all contact with me like a month after calling me their favorite person ever, I've seen long time friendships turn into literal rivalries etc. "Friendship" is just a word.
>>
>>25607583
When I only started working I was in position of software developer. However after failing a project due to poor work ethic and overall juvenile stupidity I was moved into QA position. Majority of my contacts at that time were my ex classmates, and I was so embarrassed they would know about me having less prestigious job I cut the contacts with them. Though I believe, there’s was this female classmate who somehow found out and told others. But there’s that.

I used to have a circle among my office colleagues, and actually a nice circle - meaning they had more interests beyond where to take kids for a weekend. It turns out that most of the office works remotely now, so that another one.

>Friendship
It aint what it used to be in the past. In the past people had real friends. I see it on my parents. People that cared for them, that were friends for life. That were there in ups and downs. That they shared interests with and that had sober grown up conversations with when needed.
This friendship today is just a watered down shitty ersatz fake version of something most of people in the past had in their life, that made life a little bit more bareable and worth living

My job is soulless and underpaid busywork for a bog standard startup, very much the Gen X Dilbert/Office Space meme, however, I do get to work from home, and because our business is shit, I don't have to deal with very many customers, and I work remote, so in practice I get a lot of downtime to write and relax whilst getting paid. It's fine, im not insulted, im at peace with it. Im sure because I've tried everything and tried really hard to develop and keep true friendships. People never reciprocate. Kinda. He survived the poisoning but we did a blood test afterwards, and while he's thankfully poison-free now, his liver function is apparently really bad. Going to the vet again on Wednesday for an ultrasound, worst case scenario would be cancer, it's what got my previous dog. Hope I don't lose my buddy, he's only 7 years old. It's burning into my wallet but he's worth it.
>>
I realize how this sounds but the best thing for your pet is raw meat. raw (lean) beef is the safest. tinned dog food (and especially not dry kibble) is no diet for a living thing.
>>
>>25607743
Oh man, that's rough. Apparently it's easier to treat dogs for poison than it is for cats, so maybe it was enough? Praying for your buddy too.
>>
>>25607758
Thank you very much. How'd your furry friend even get poisoned to begin with?
>>
>>25607757
I used to read this dog nutritionist on Instagram, and she used to do reviews on dry kibble. She said that mass market stuff like Royal Canine is actual poison, but smaller brands may do some good stuff, although until they become popular and reformulate to cheapen the production.

Raw diet is one hell of an effort, and expensive too. Here’s another controversy: I grew in this culture where if the dog falls ill, then so be it. People wouldn’t spend hundreds of dollars to keep them alive, although that’s was long ago. Good thing I don’t have a pet, it’s unironically a relief.
>>
>>25607772
We don't know. I was going out to feed the chickens, and I found him in the grass. As soon as he saw me, he started yelling at the top of his lungs. He's very quiet, so I got spooked and immediately ran to get my mother and she took him to the emergency vet. They took a blood sample, and they're supposed to call tomorrow. Hopefully we'll know then.

Sleep deprivation again, insomnia again, I'll get a few hours max, 2-3, and that's it for the night, that's if I'm lucky. If it gets bad it'll be no sleep, or maybe 30min-1hr. I'm short with everyone now, not saying what I can in conversations. All thoughts are on a timer now, every conversation these days has the cadence of short form video content, and if you go over by a second or by a gesture, boom that's it then. All year I've barely gotten a real sentence out, it's fake communication now. Not real transfer of living ideas, just birdlike ape noises and frontal lobe herniation. This depersonalized cloud is filling up my brain, brain can't discard the waste. I think the protein is called beta-amyllene, it cleans the brain during sleep. I'm in a fog of constant noise and blur, at ease, watching it all go by, thoughtless, full of thoughts, tired, at ease among it all. I have cultivated a space of comfort to be exhausted in, and trusted people that I can say nothing to. A state of waking sensory deprivation. I am a sapient zombie, worn to a dull point, alive in my head as flashing bits of lights, strung along and dragged through the day by habit. There is no escape, now that imagination has been outsourced and truth struck down, and the pervasive meaninglessness of even a response in a conversation is indicative of a species in pain. I wonder what new ways we will lash out in our cages, we are already mammals that hurt ourselves in the most creative ways. I've lost the plot already, I'm fucking tired.
>>
>>25607805
The culture of dog keeping is very bad. If people fully acknowledged what does it take to keep emotionally healthy and not repressed dog, way fewer would actually embark upon that.

>How to be a fascist withput every faggot around you calling you a fascist?

fewer would get married. few would become friends with people. we’re veering into something difficult here...
for pets: you can give them raw beef a few days a week it won’t break the bank. you should be eating fresh meat more yourself anyway.
>>
>>25607805
you're looking at it wrong. the majority of pets are very happy where they are. we offer them warmth, safety and companionship. working dogs have it even better because they can fulfil the purpose that's been bred into them over thousands of years, which keeps them healthy and happy. We've been living with dogs since we lived in caves. and the "cat distribution system" is a meme for a reason. on occasion even wild animals will seek out human companionship. I think that eating bland food is a trade-off most animals can live with.

tl;dr If you put an animal somewhere and it stays there, you can assume it's happy where you put it, that includes your home.

>>
>>25607833
sorry, but I think you’re looking at it the wrong way. I agree 100% on working dogs, and having a dog around the house (that you feed occasionally) is a cool thing if you live near some countryside. but for a separate living breathing being to be based entirely around living in the suburbs (or city) and going on two walks a day is a sad thought. the dog will be alright, they don’t know better (or if they do, it’s deep-down) but the reason they sleep 16 hours a day is because evolution has conditioned it into them for managing a bored life.

The fact that there are people out there with insanely obscene amounts of personal wealth (some with more than anyone else has ever had on the planet ever in human history) and that they almost always unanimously have this mindset of "I NEED MORE, MORE FOR ME, ALL FOR ME MUHAHAHAHAHA" actually kinda boggles my fucking mind. You'd think once you've acquired a couple billion or trillion dollars that you'd eventually go "okay, that's plenty enough for me and the next few generations of my family, lol I'm good for the foreseeable future"
>>
>>25607843
I understand what you mean. I agree that there are a lot of people that don't properly cater to their dog's needs, and I'm deeply against people keeping pets they don't have room for (it's why I didn't have pets for a long time). But as humans we provide things that are more than just base needs. I believe contentment and happiness are the same thing. If a dog is content, I'd like to think they're happy.
>>
>>25607854
yeah, but you’re a human and they’re dog. two separate species that nature never intended to be this close. and all a dog wants to do is live according to nature.
>>
>>25607851
two reasons.
1. The type of person who CAN acquire that kind of wealth (unless through luck) are the kind of people who value money over anything else. Any person with morals will eventually come to a point where they have to choose between someone's life, livelihood, health or happiness, and more money. A moral person will eventually concede to the needs of others. The ultra-rich don't.
2. Money changes your brain chemistry. After a certain point, you stop thinking like a real human being. Everything loses meaning, including money. It's incomprehensible to the normal human.
>>
>>25607841
Terrible combo, to be honest. He's a terrier inside the house, and a wimpy greyhound outside. But I love him all the same.
>>
>>25607860
>two separate species that nature never intended to be this close.
we've been living with dogs for 10,000 years. living together is nature at this point.
>>
>>25607860
A dog is an animal that is custom built to live with people. It's like that picture where it's either two faces or a vase. A dog doesn't care about nature at all, it wants to be with a person and please that person.
>>
>>25607872
>it wants to be with a person and please that person.

>>
>>25607867

>>
>>25607875

Nothing, it's just that not every dog is like that, and most definitely not every breed. The police and military, for example, don't just go and order 5000 Belgian Malinois from the dog factory; the puppies that start training are handpicked by dog handlers, who look at each and every dog available and evaluate which ones show promising behavior, and which ones don't. You can't train every dog to be super obedient, they've got personalities just like humans.
>>
>>25607827
Oh yeah, convenience is the price we pay for the community. I’m glad to be childless partially because of this reason.

Several years ago I was obsessed with getting myself a dog. I binged It’s Me or the Dog on YouTube, read many petfluencers and dog trainers on Instagram. What got to me at the end was this pet trainer who wrote a post on how one shouldn’t expect to insert a dog into life they already have because it doesn’t work this way. You’ll need to accept different level of cleanness in your life, don’t just tell yourself like I’m gonna be on the top of it, no, it will never be the same. Dog may fell I’ll and you may need to cancel whatever plans you have to take them to the vet. I realized that cleanness is something I cannot sacrifice. I’m way too materialistic to have my stuff pissed upon.
> you should be eating fresh meat more yourself anyway
I do, but I don’t buy my own produce, nor that I cook. Although at some point when I would watch these dog ASMRs I was like WTF this dog eats better than me kek.

I'm an illiterate retard that reads fraction as much as I should, but recognize that in the first step in battering my broken will into something potentially useful to society, I should read difficult stuff.

I picked Metamorphoses by Ovid because the author's name sounds like a raid boss or something.

"OVID".

The name is menacing to me somehow, and my only with a physical volume of his work was spying a large, hardbacked, canvas-wrapped tome in some egg head's bookshelf one time back in college (which I dropped out of, because I'm a retard).

It's now been two days, and I've steadily picking away at it for several hours. I enjoy it substantially more than I thought I would, since I assumed it was going to be a book of dense philosophy. I never would have guessed that it's actually a work of poetry.

I've tried my hardest to ignore the translation wars which surround the work, but am aware that their have been something like one hundred translations across 600 or more years and apparently every avid reader of the classics has their perfered verison. I settled on Henry King's 1871 translation because it's on Internet Archive, and after reading the translator's preface, additionally found a .pdf of Thomas Orger's 1811 translation, which was apparently only available to private collectors in King's day. The prospect of reading a rare translation was too much for me to pass up, so I read some of the more complex passages in both texts, and then try to parse out the meaning between the two of them. This is a slow process because I'm a slow person, but it helps make the imagery stick in my mind.

Now that you guys are talking about pets I have a confession to make. My family used to live in a war zone, and during evacuation we left behind our German Shepard. Of course, she was fed by our relative who chose to stay there, and she eventually found a new owner for the dog. This situation was common during that time, and there was a lot of controversy online. Some people said you should stick with your pet no matter what, other said it’s at least understandable because your new place may not allow for the pet.

There's a woman across the way who is keeping a very large dog in a very small apartment. I felt bad for the dog but at least she leaves the balcony door open so it can be "outside" when she's away at work. The dog is always sitting out there on its day-bed and observing the world, so perhaps it doesn't mind being alone.

Goofy ass shit. Sweet to have your wife get you a new ring though, and I mean marriage sweet. The type of thing you love a person for.
>>
>>25608423
Real jewlery is a curse, and I'm incredibly lucky to have met my wife. I should have been attatched to the person, not the object, and I feel like an idiot for putting so much importants on some shiny metal. On the flip side, I remembered to take my smokes out of my pocket; you cannot reasonably ask a man 20 rums in to do anything responsibly.

What happened after your lost wedding ring?

She just ordered a new one, got it on right now, she's sweet like that. It's just a $100 idk black metal ring from some website, we picked it because we know I'm clumsy. Now HER ring is quite the heirloom and is very finely insured, she wars it on a strong golden chain around her neck, where people can see it better and it ain't just gonna fall off any time you use your hands wrong.
She was appropriately sentimental about the lost ring, but not truly upset. I was the same way. It was nice it went into the ocean on the same shore I proposed to her.

I woke up at 7AM. Site 10 at Dinosaur Valley State Park. I had to pee and the homeschooled (assumed) children were up. No way I could fall asleep again over their piercing voices. I decided there was nothing left for me to do and with checkout looming at noon, I woke up and immediately started packing up. Everything tucked away neatly into a stuff sack or duffel bag or large plastic tote. All of that into my truck. I was sitting in the driver's seat at 8AM. David, who was in Site 8 next to mine, waved me down through the passenger's window. "Your tailgate is down." "Oh, dangit." I hopped out of the driver's seat and closed the tailgate. "Would you like a cup of coffee?" he asked me. "No thank you. Have a good day, David!" I said. "Sorry if I caused you any trouble last night." "Not at all, David." And then I hopped into my truck and sheepishly drove away.

David had arrived yesterday afternoon. He drove a domestic sedan in silver. He had a small "two-man" sized Walmart tent and his bedding was a length of rolled foam. All of his belongings were in plastic totes. He had a dog named Jack. He spent a few hours unloading his vehicle and setting up his camp in Site 6. He even disinfected and scrubbed the metal picnic table. Then the rarely present denizens of Site 6, a pair of Spanish speaking homosexuals in a white Dodge conversion van who I had seen the last few days, came back and told David they had paid for another night in that spot. They did not want to move, even though the extent of their settling in to Site 6, or any site for that matter, involved simply parking the van.

David wasn't happy but he didn't fight them too hard. I think the couple had a receipt taped to their window confirming their claim. I was very high from a THC vape and was smoking my corn cob pipe and reading "Pale Fire" by Nabokov. David waved at me and asked what the site number next to mine is. I told him it was number 8. Standard house number logic of evens on one side, odds on the other. He was annoyed at being kicked out after his efforts. I agreed that it would have been easier for the couple to take 8 instead. He stuck out his hand and introduced himself as David something or other. I shook his hand and told him my name was XXX. I noticed that he was missing his front teeth. David asked me if I had ever been to San Angelo State Park. I told him no but that I would like to go. He told me he had been primitive camping there for the last two months. That means the dog days of Texas heat in August and September. I can only imagine, a man with a Chrysler and a small tent and a dog living outdoors in the heat of the summer. David apologized for moving into the site next to me. I assured him it was no problem at all.

I didn't say anything else to David. I was annoyed that he was watching South Park on his phone with no headphones, but he didn't abuse the privilege when darkness fell. I heard him rustling around through the night, occasionally talking to his dog.
>>
For what it's worth I was just on the beach drinking a Rum Punch thinking about how nice it was when I proposed to my wife, and this vulgar homosexual decided to destroy that habitat in apparent projected disgust at such basic peace
>>
>>25608475
As I was sitting by the fire, baked out of my mind, I had positive charitable feelings flowing through me. I created a fantasy wherein I sneakily left David the cash in my wallet and a flashlight that I found a duplicate of in my camping bag and my THC vape. I thought that giving it to him directly would be demeaning in some way, acknowledging his homelessness. But he was clearly homeless. Many people you meet while camping are homeless. Some have fifth wheel trailers, some vans, and others like David are in small sedans and other types of cars not made for off-roading and adventure and the bougie hiking lifestyle sold at REI. The difference between being homeless and camping is whether you have some permanent place to go after you are done with your stay.

Well I had this childish fantasy of charity by the fire but I didn't give him anything. I didn't say anything to him this morning either, not even a "Good morning." And David reached out to me with the offer of coffee, which means "Please talk to me, nobody else will," and I outright denied him to his face. I was too cowardly to take his hand.

I tell myself I want to be a God fearing man and every time I am offered an opportunity to do the right thing or help someone I decline out of fear and embarrassment. What would it actually have cost me to sit with David for 10 minutes and let him tell me something about himself? I know what it's like to feel lonely. I know what it's like to feel invisible. But I don't know what it's like to be homeless, permanently moving around, not knowing what tomorrow will bring, being judged by my appearance and the assumptions of others that I am up to no good and ready to steal or lie or whatever else. Or that I am fiending for drugs because I'm missing my teeth in that way that meth users often do.

I failed at my Christian duty to reach out to a lonely man. I pray for the lonely people in the world every night but I couldn't actually do anything about it when given the opportunity. Campsites and public lands across this country are filled with lonely forgotten people. Yet I avert my gaze and keep to myself just like everyone else does.

I think about that old man in the Ozarks who sat in the driver's seat of his car for what seemed like an entire day straight. He was sitting when I got there and sitting when I left. I felt an urge in the back of my mind to say hello to him and I denied it. "He probably doesn't want to be bothered," I told myself to excuse my cowardice.

Please forgive me David. Please forgive me old Ozark man. Please forgive those of us who could reach out and make a difference every single day and yet we never do.

Its not a book so much as an annecdote from Foucault, but it's fairly apt and I'm sure the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosopjy has a fairly good rundown on the concept. If not I can give you a short hand.

Unrelated, Walter Benjamin is one of my favorites, and Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction is often viewed as a marxist baudrillard-lite text, but I think it has a few very important passages about aura and authenticity, particularly in our current context.

The Greek philosophers took geometry as their fundamental reference and the result were spacialized views of reality which excluded time. They took timelessness and permanence as the ground of reality. And with this the statue as the aesthetic ideal.

But what if we discovered calculus before geometry and early mature philosophy used that as a reference instead?

In practice this seems implausible because geometry emerged from the practical problems of land measurement, building construction, and timekeeping that early agricultural civilization encountered. For our speculative case to hold it would mean that a civilization instead encountered sophisticated problems of continuous change before these.

It doesn't make sense for an animal similar to a human, but it could make sense for a hypothetical human-level intelligent cetacean or cephalopod. After all their primary experiential reality would reflect the thesis "everything flows." Likewise their first physics could be fluid dynamics instead of the ballistics of discrete solid bodies. Discreteness would be derived from flow instead of the reverse. Also echolocation is delayed and thus temporally situated perception: what is perceived is the past, not a contemporary present such as with vision, and this must be cognitively accounted for.
>>
>>25608601
Absolutely. Any arbitrary reason could have led us to different early understanding, changed our reality entirely

You know these weren't just strangers, I was close to these people, and it turned out that anything I did not initiate and control, did not happen, down to the 'notice me when I'm here' level. How am I supposed to catch myself fitting in, when I have to control the social experiences I am in? Don't you want me? I have found much evolution and resurrection in my middle years here. Why on earth would I give a happy ending? The chafe and the journey are the ending, and to begin is to accept the destination is a mirage of self; an isomer of a reality too twisted to divine with any sort of long term foresight. But to be folded is to be creased forever, and a crease is a great way to create a trough to pour your spirit into the next vessel, assuming it's granular and solid enough not to sop into the fabric. And you're close enough to meeting this threshold, that maybe 10-20% of the time, you actually DO perform like a highly successful person. Like for maybe 30-60 days out of the year, you're making all the right moves that would put you on the path of success. But you just can't stay in that state of mind for whatever reason, so you always slide back to being an average mediocre person

Nothing wrong with trying hard. Everyone should always try hard. The only issue with the concept is the idea of a skill mismatch in a setting of competition, but there are always a variety of ways to handicap yourself so you can still try hard.

Oh, so you're one of those sodomites. You should only get AIDS and die, you pig. How's that? Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig. You got nothing better to do than to put me down, you piece of garbage. You got nothing to do today? Go eat a sausage and choke on it. Get trichinosis. Now, do we have another nice anon here who's not busy, because he didn't have a nice night in the bathhouse, who's angry at me today? Put another – put another sodomite on ... no more replies? I don't care about these bums, they mean nothing to me. They're all sausages

Everyone has depression in their life. But if the whole nation is told, 'boo-hoo-hoo, come and get a medication, come and get treatment, talk about mental illness.' You know what you wind up with? You wind up with Obama in the White House and liars in every phase of the government. That's what you wind up with. It is a weak, sick, nation. A weak, sick, broken nation. And you need men like me to save the country. You need men to stand up and say stop crying like a baby over everything ... No wonder we're being laughed at around the world. No wonder ISIS can defeat our military.

Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, "Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot.

Trust in God. God leads my footsteps. God has determined that I will be on podcast come January. God determines a lot of things in our lives and you have to trust in God and just say its fate at a certain point.

Whatever that gene or element of human psychology that makes someone unable to be attracted to anyone related to them, well, I straight up was not born with it.

There are those who chase god and those who inhabit Godliness. Which are you? How do you know?

I have a guess, that you're like my retarded step-brother, driving two hours to Brampton to sit in a "mens group" cult meeting from 8am-4pm, then promptly speeding home as fast as his Chevy Spark will take him, so he can go to church again from 4-12am. He says you can't be a part-time Christian, I tell him he can't cheat God. He went to 9 four hour meetings about truth but doesnt know Plato, or the word Epistemology. He doesnt know anything, really, despite going to church 20 hours a week. As the most selfish person I've ever met, no amount of Jesus will get this 33 year old virgin, who took a vow of celibacy at 32, a woman of any rapport.

Yeah, yeah... I'm well aware. I haven't really cared about anime for years but the Lupin ones were some of the last ones I ever watched and they're genuinely entertaining.

Anyone have that image with some attractive 18/19 year old girl posts a picture about finishing her first book on reddit along with her face, some guy messages her claiming to have cancer and what would really help him is to have a picture of her feet, and she sends him one? I saw it posted on here many years ago and it occasionally pops into mind.

Every Chinese S&M video is just foot shit from front to back. They'll post videos of them hanging a dog up with a wire while they burn its eyes out with a blow torch or of some giant disgusting centipede ripping a little hamster apart and they put a pink bow on the hamsters head, but for sex as far as they'll go is a businesswoman sitting on a couch and patting her feet on a guy's stomach. I guess it's some lingering cultural defiance against capitulating too far to Japanese cultural influence.

It's even worse when every conversation turns into something about people's kids and not themselves
