Science fiction set in space is lame.Fantasy set in the middle ages is lame.
>>25612945What are your preferred settings for those?
>>25612985Fantasy set in space and science fiction set in middle ages
>>25613001Helliconia, kinda
gimme some WEIRD fukken RECSVurt-anon, I downloaded the book and will start it next time I lay down to read.>read blurb>sounds like a PKD novel>author won some PKD awardyep I'm thinking I'm going to have a good time
>>25613108Schismatrix Plus - Bruce SterlingThe guy never wrote anything like it before or after. The short stories included are the + and they are very good as well.
>>25612945So you have no soul?
>>25612894>What's the last book you read? The City of Dreaming Books. Very good shit, highly recommend.>What's the current book you're reading? The Amber Spyglass. I love His Dark Materials but this last book is such an acid trip.>What do you plan to read next?Moby-Dick most likely. But in terms of fantasy probably something King Arthur related like The Once and Future King.
>>25613125fukken downloaded

>it's a count Fenring chapter
>>25613108Vladimir Sorokin - Ice Trilogy, Telluria, Blue LardDavid R. Bunch - Moderan
>>25612834>kind of lameDunno what you mean, not the word I'd use to describe ultra extreme viking warrior sentiment. They did turn Mercury into their own private Valhalla which is kind of dickish to the mortals still living there.
>>25613194then why not just wish for valhallla
>>25613196Question makes no sense
>>25612894>What's the last book you read?Sordaneon>What's the current book you're reading?Sordaneon>What do you plan to read next?Sordaneon
As I age I find myself agreeing with this more and more unironically.
>>25613354yesideas that must be imparted in half-truths and lies cannot endure direct scrutiny
>>25613108Quarantine by Egan
Books with this feel?
Dead general full of insufferable faggots
>no banlistAre we gonna be alright..?
>>25612894Chapter 1 of Tytania is 6K words. It's entirely about five dukes having a meeting about their military defeat.I'm not sure how the author managed to pad it to 6K words.I did enjoy it. Still find it weird how little happened.
>>25613354Hey, it's Vincent Omniaveritas!
>>25613108Metal Sky - Bodyportal 1don't think it has an en translation tho, it's czech
>>25613176Mmmmm I'll try the Ice Trilogy.>>25613483Read it twice but spot-on weird fucking book I enjoyed immensely.>>25613756Aw I can't read Czech. Even if I could, there isn't a copy on Anna's.
>>25613777Roadside Picnic? Piranesi? The Cat who Walks Through Walls?
>>25613580>>25612894YES, finally I am free to talk about Wolfe once again... Favorite non solar cycle/most underrated story? If non of you have read his Wolfe Archipelago shorts check them out.
>>25613861you were always free to do so anon
>>25612894>What's the last book you read?recently finished the Sun Eater bookslast night knocked off Neal Asher's "the Fetch" short story>What's the current book you're reading????>What do you plan to read next?I was thinking about (re)reading some Tolkien stuff I haven't read since high school(unfinished tales, etc) but I'm not sure yet. I've read just about every high-profilespace opera I know of, running out of options there
I read 300 pages of Shadows Upon Time today brosThe last two Sun-Eater books are easily the best. RIP William
>>25613975>RIP Williamgone too soon
>>25613987He was only 2000 years youngPractically still a child
Just replayed Bloodborne. It's Halloween on Saturday, do you gents have any good fantasy recs reminiscent of it? I looked on Redditt and they're all fapping over between two fires, but I read the first ten pages and it was written like shit.
>>25613777Picrel is weird - or at least somewhat unique - and enjoyable.
>>25613539Almuric, by Robert E. Howard.
>>25614055The Coldfire Trilogy is probably the closest equivalent to Bloodborne in literature.
I'm looking for books about suffering and enduring.
>>25614055Solomon Kane
>>25614063>search archive for reviews>no resultscolor me surprised
>>25614139Navola
>>25614167Sounds cool, thanks for the recommendation.
Genuine question here. I always hear people complaining about Memory, Sorrow and Thorn being too long winded and also having cuck shit. Is there a comparable fantasy story that avoids these pitfalls? “Classic” fantasy with dragons, history, a bit more modern, etc. that is tight, concise and no cucking? Obviously LOTR is out of the question.
>>25614189>Memory, Sorrow and Thorn being too long winded and also having cuck shitBy Allah you people are dogs, I will carry on as usual
>>25613975>>25613987>The walls had closed in around William at the last, trapped him in a glass box, forbade even the freedom of his chambers. The king can move but one square at a time, and only where he sees no danger. William had been robbed of all his moves, robbed even of the piano whose music had been his refuge, his last and private joy.
>>25614139The engineer trilogy is about suffering and enduring all manner of bullshit for your family. Basically picrel.
>>25614139>>25614167>>25614181Observe. This is the proper way. Mention the name only. No description. No discussion. No goodreads group link. No yev review. No one needs or wants that. Anon must have blind faith that anon will provide. Anon failed the test by not fully trusting rather than going in blind, but anon can forgive anon. By anon's grace read with joy in your heart.
>>25614055Throne of Bones by Brian McNaughton. Also play the Withering Realm
>>25613935> CultureWhat's the recommended reading order for the Culture novels? Also, anything good with where the protagonist is an AI, or something like Neal Stephenson's worldbuilding (Diamond Age, Seveneves, Anathem)
>>25614669if you've never read any of the culture books I'd say just read them in the order they were publishedsome seem to think Phlebas isn't the best entrypoint but I read them all in order and I don't really know why people think that>AIsalot of AI chars in the Culture as drones and running ships, planets, and orbitals, etcNeal Asher's Polity books are a human spacefaring society ruled by (mostly) benevolent AIs
I'm reading the Three Stignata of Palmer Eldritch and PKD is excellent at writing characters that seem rational and unhinged at the same time. He's like the David Lynch of literature.
>>25613919We have always been at war with eurasia...
>>25614669some Xeelee stories have Virtual (AI) protags but not many; one is the last entry in the series.
Frankenstein is definitely pretty good. I can see why it is influential. The way the monster was discriminated against and the results of that discrimination was a pretty great tragedy.
>>25614189>"dark" fantasy slop
>thinking of how to explain my setting of middle age kingdoms so close to and vaguely respectful of city states>settle on Germanic/Norse-esque invasion of a Rome-like state>explains their relatively barbaric religious practices while being strangely organized>was centuries ago to the point they're not aware the raiders to their coasts are their long lost kinsmen>share the same gods but funnily think the raiders got the pantheon from them I'm thinking of mentioning some far off island nation of that's been conquered over and over again by the original psuedo-Romans, a splinter group of the Germanic/Norse invaders, and as of recently a war band of Germanized Romans as a joke about what a fucking mess Briton's pre-renaissance history was like but it seems kind of mean spirited
>>25614189If allegations of cuck shit are putting you off reading MS&T then you're missing out.To define any of the events that occur in that series as "cuckoldry" renders the word meaningless. As for long winded, that might be a fair criticism of the beginning of first book -depending on your tastes. But I always found the pacing of TDbC pretty comfy.
>>25614669>>25614711I first read Player of Games which was fun and then The Bridge which was weird in a good way. Then I tried Consider Phlebas which started with an interesting set up but it switched into an action sci-fi B movie and I didn't finish it
I have an idea for a modern fantasy story that I think would do well on royalroad. What kind of posting schedules should fantasy stories there operate on? Assuming each update is an average of 3k words. I could write that much nearly every day, but I'm not sure if posting too frequently is a problem.
>>25612894I don't come her often. Why were mods being assholes in previous /sffg/ threads and banning discussion of authors?
>>25612894The only reason I lurked this thread was for the mega.nz folder. Fuck whoever took it down.
>>25615268no authors are banned. It's just shitposting
>>25615123I think I'll make the psuedo-Germans primarily Gothic. That's something most people have no fucking clue about. And that way I'm not just making up retarded names
>>25615321Tolkien did that
>>25615328motherfucker
>>25615268>Why were mods being assholes in previous /sffg/ threads and banning discussion of authors? It was literally just an anon pretending to be a mod, but the real mods were too lazy to ban him.
>reading blood music, pretty good>people start to disappear, leaving their clothes behind>no goo or fluid, they just seem to have turned into air>what is this bullshit, book better explain this>best i got is when bernard burst into flames and seemingly turned into pure energyis that what happened?the cells turned all the body matter into energy?
