I was just with a guy who talked about these books for 20 minutes and reccomended them to multiple women.
How are you supposed to act in a situation like that, as someone with actual taste? I nearly died of cringe, even though I don't mind the guy personally.
>>
>>25614750
agree with him because he's talkign to girls and you're not. he's closer to getting pussy than you are
>>
I wish people would pick stranger mid entertainment trash.

You try to steer the conversation away, to stop him embarrassing himself, but not before gauging their (women) reaction: they might out themselves as equally [pejorative].
>>
>>25614750
Most men don't ever read books. I'd rather see a man read relatively poor literature than none at all.
>>
Were the multiple women his nursing assistant and his mom? Did your mom tell you you have to be friends with him because she knows his dad died in an accident at the tire shop he worked at? Does his mom sometimes walk around in the apartment they live in with a towel on even though she's one of those chunky Mexican ladies with no tits, giving you the big ol belladonna eyes to make up for it? Did you jack off in his room about it while he was outside cleaning up a mess he left in the yard? Did he tell you you can't put toilet paper in the toilet at his house because his mom's Mexican and they don't do that down there? How much do you weigh? Is he fatter than you?
>>
>>25614784
No no no no no 170 lbs. and he's about the same bf% but shorter.

I don't believe a word of this post I'm afraid, but thanks for responding.

You say whatever the fuck you want. Interrupt him and call the books stupid if you want, what's he gonna do about it?

Why would you react? Why would you do anything at all? Is this how you go through life? Reacting to stupid shit, thinking they're important somehow? What does it matter to you what they read? Look, either they will read the books and have the same taste as you, in which case they will think he's a fucking idiot. Or, they will have the same taste as him, in which case you don't want them anyway. Or, and this is by far the most likely, they won't read what he recommends anyway. If that is the case, they either won't because they don't take advise from random tards, in which case you shouldn't interject with your own recommendations anyway, or they don't read in general, in which case we're back to them not being of interest to you.

And regardless of any of these outcomes, none of them will ever call you later and go "hey anon fuck me in every hole because [alternative]".

There is no version of this where you should pay attention to their interaction.

A woman recommended these books to me.

Anyway people can be enthusiastic and not always 100% of the time consider the entirety of each individual they encounter, even among high eq or iq people.
>>
>>25614779
This is true. People here can shit on paperback genre novels as much as they like, but at the end of the day reading for pleasure at all is uncommon enough to be laudable. You'd be shocked at how many people can't even sit through a movie, let alone a book, and comprehend/process/enjoy it.
>>25614858
Same. I even remember being a little hurt that DCC was "exactly your sense of humor". She didn't mean it as an insult, but that's basically her calling me a massive redditor. Having video game mechanics as a diegetic story element also kind of turned my stomach. But lots of the people I talk to keep praising this damn series, so I guess they see something in it.
>>
>>25614858
>A woman recommended these books to me.

Oh ok, did you ask your waitress for a recommendation later that day and she said "I think you should eat shit" and you were like "Huh, maybe I should."

>>25614917
>I even remember being a little hurt that DCC was "exactly your sense of humor". She didn't mean it as an insult,

She absolutely meant it as an insult. It's literally an insult.
>>
Is it really so horrible that you observed somebody being enthusiastic about something they genuinely enjoyed? Why not try to engage him a serious conversation about why he enjoyed these novels? I bet at core, there are universal aspects of his enjoyment that you could relate to, even if you do not care for the particular books.

Project Hail Mary was fine.
>>
>>25614750
Those two were my ex's favorite books, and her friends were reading them too. So it's a good way to connect with dorky Asian women who like white guys. Sounds like that dude knows the game.

Also, I don't get the hate for these. Hail Mary is a good book written from the perspective of an insufferable narrator, and the DCC series is fine. I enjoyed 4-7.

My boss gave me his copy of DCC. I'm at page 50, so far I really hate the "humor" and the "realistic MC" viewpoint. The world seems interesting, though. Lots of piss and shit humor which I do not care for as well. It's like some WoW player who read Ready Player One made a book. Does it get any better or no?
>>
>>25618548
It gets very slightly better, but not much.
>>
>>25614917
>But lots of the people I talk to keep praising this damn series, so I guess they see something in it.
It reads fast and is easy to understand. That's all it takes.
>>
>>25618548
The first book has a focus on game mechanics without any real plot. The other books introduce an actual big picture, character development, and exploring how the world works outside of the game, although the mechanics are always there due to the setting. Also the first book is the only one that takes place within a literal DnD dungeon. Later books read more like adventure or war stories. Book 3 is all about train autism if you're one of those freaks.

Take that for what it's worth. The humor and writing don't change, so if that's the main thing that bothers you the rest won't be an improvement. I don't really like that either, but for me it was 50% just dealing with it and 50% realizing that the AI itself was trained on bad internet humor so it was intentionally cringe.
>>
>>25618548
DCC is meant to be listened to, not read.
>>
>>25618548
>>25618636
Oh yeah, piss and shit isn't really part of the humor but it's always about something gross. Think dead bodies and dicks.
>>
>>25618639
For me it's the opposite. I can't deal with those voices. Annoying as fuck. The stupidity of the books is OK while my brain is in charge but not when some Asian fag is screaming in Monty Python voices.
>>
>>25618646
>>25618646
I can agree with that. I think Jeff Hays is incredibly talented but the voices can definitely be irritating sometimes.
Despite that, if print was the only option, I simply wouldn’t read this series. As audiobooks, I can soak them up at 1.3x speed on my commute. I only read them because many of my (female) friends do. But the next book in the series is 26 hours long and I don’t know if I can force myself to tackle it. And the one after that is 28 hours long. That’s insane. It’s longer than the last “real” (aka not genre fiction) book I read East of Eden. But at least I’ll have something to talk about with the normies.
>>
>>25618665
It's a fast read at least. Where are you right now? I think they keep getting better through book 7 and then book 8 is such a mess it made me question the author's interest in the series.
>>
I'm questioning my own mental state because Signet's ara~ara personality was always a turnon despite being described as a horrifying fish woman. Sad she's dead.

Almost done with 5. 3 was awful, I’m not really a fan of trains. I almost quit but everyone says they get better so I’m soldiering on.
This is the first time I’m hearing that 8 is a miss. What went wrong?
>>
>>25618818
In its own way, the author had generally been good about continually building the plot and letting you learn about the world slowly via events in the story throughout the series. Book 8 was a pretty big change in narrative. The first 3/4 is basically filler activity with no consequences, a bunch of plot devices are shoehorned in that either lead nowhere or make stuff happen inorganically, and then the last 1/4 of the book is a literal infodump about the backstory of the world. Plus new comic relief characters are inserted at the last minute. It's like the author had various random scenes in mind and he needed the plot to be at a certain point to start book 9, so he just mashed everything together to force out a book.

>>
>>25614750
I liked Project Hail Mary. I don't really listen to book recs though. I don't think I've ever met a person who likes the same books I do. Even on /lit/, I've read maybe 3 books I've ever been recommended? I just nod and say "that's cool, that's cool" and forget about it. Sometimes I look them up if they do sound interesting, but usually they end up being something I don't care about.
>>
>>25614750
Personally I never judge them outwardly but when I'm recommended these books by someone I don't hate, I usually just give a very slight nod, say "ohh yeah I heard about that one... Idk it's not really my thing" but I inject the absolute slightest amount of snark possible in order to feel good about myself and simultaneously insert the Idea in their head that I think they're stupid and their books are stupid without having to be a pretentious asshole and point it out to their face explicitly. Call me a coward or a douchebag all you like but it has helped me from committing social suicide a bunch of times.

Honestly just ask an AI to write you a DCC ripoff and then edit it to not look like AI, it's that poorly written, just ask it to make it super appealing to redditors, that's why this series sells.
>>
>>25620120
Tell it to bring up sporks periodically in the narrative and to have an ad break for Darn Tough socks.

>Tell it to bring up sporks periodically in the narrative and to have an ad break for Darn Tough socks.
Hell honestly get it to reword the novels almost exactly but outside of being sued for plagiarism but replace the talking cat with a dog companion bet you could make bank on that.
>>
>>25618831
That’s unfortunate.
I’m just hoping he actually ends it at 10 books like he originally intended. I’m invested in the story and want to see its conclusion. I don’t want to, and won’t, read 20 half-assed cash grabs.

You misunderstand. I read plenty of resl literature at home. I listen to fun/trendy/lightweight stuff on my commute.
I’m hoping this series ends satisfactorily at ten books as planned. I will be disappointed if he decides to drag it on and the quality suffers. I’ll stop reading if that happens.
For now, I’m enjoying it enough to continue listening.
Lighten up, fellas.

The main feature is an obsession with cliches. Good writing on Reddit is about inducing trivial or childish nostalgia as programmatically as possible. When a Redditor is really going full speed they get a rush from bringing up Disney princesses, Darn Tough socks, or some hobby that involves collecting dolls made for boys, and hopefully they can bring this up purely with catchphrases and le memes. The reaction is a known entity, the language that causes the reaction is a known entity, everything referenced is a known entity, but to them what I'm describing in this sentence is an upwardly spiraling gyre of pleasure, not an inhumanly boring flat nothingness.

I agree in the sense that
1) he's showing the girl he is passionate about things, demonstrating he is capable of passion
2) he's showing he has imagination which is huge when it comes to spicing up the boredom that routine marriage life becomes, especially with dates, romance, gifts, holidays and in the bedroom
3) it shows he can read books and apparently likes doing so which is huge. Only like 10% of guys she meets are going to be into reading books

But he could easily step it up to the next level that a lot of his competition is playing on
