Ariel is some celestial shit. That's the only thing I've read of her so I cannot give you any nerdy brainy gay comment other people here could. I'll just say that I was really depressed the first time I read it and some phrases pierced me like merciless thunder

Good but overrated. Narcissist female neckbeards love her for a reason, and it's not a good one.

i wonder if reading ulysses got into her head too much. she was married on Bloomsday, deliberately, you know.

Still very inspired by that rock-humping episode of hers quoted in our last Plath thread.

The Bell Jar is unironically a really good novel.

I read The Bell Jar as a 35 year old man out of curiosity and I thought it was pretty good. My opinion probably doesn't matter though because I think you're supposed to be a 15 year old girl when you read that.
Ariel was lovely
She's hot

Her phone was lying on the floor next to her oven. She had the reply window open on it on some thread in /b/ but had only written out "You retards should be taxed for every post you make. It's not worth" before apparently setting the phone down and cranking up the gas.

I don't think she was aware of /lit/ at all.

Post some erotic extracts. An anon promised there was some saucy entries in the last Plath journal thread but failed to deliver outside of that one extract where she's fantasising about being fucked by the sun.

That's pretty good though, I usually have nothing at all ready to back up my sexually motivated assertions.

Anyway I think Ted Hughes pulled her hair too hard every time he fucked her from behind.

There’s a film of The Bell Jar starring Billie Eilish coming out next year.

It's the last cinematic document before she chopped off her tits so for this reason alone it is culturally valuable

I really liked The Bell Jar years ago, but I haven't particularly liked anything else I've read (not her mature poetry, not her juvenile poetry, and not her short stories) so I'm worried that I might reduce my appreciation of The Bell Jar if I ever get around to reading it again.
>>
>>25629859
The Bell Jar more like The Billie Jar amirite folks?
>>
>>25629340
Clocked us heavy with sexual personae but no pride and prejudice? No sense and sensibility? No lolita? like cmon
>>
>>25629309
my judgement has no weight, but i find her poems lacking grace and sensibilty? it has a quality of counting and cataloguing pictures without feeling. even if she perceives the world as abstract and cold, there is a way to embalm it, to give it a recollection of human. But i find her too stuck up and rigid. Even her more emotional work is a reiteration of simplicity and i as the reader have to do the work of finding the touch she avoids. and i cannot give her credit of making me mute and sloppish, just like her. i dont like it and i hope, that i dont write like this.
>>
>>25630862
Come on nigger her descriptions are overflowing with poetic emotions. Simplicity? Pfft

This is the light of the mind, cold and planetary.
The trees of the mind are black. The light is blue.
The grasses unload their griefs at my feet as if I were God,
Prickling my ankles and murmuring of their humility.
Fumy spiritous mists inhabit this place
Separated from my house by a row of headstones.
I simply cannot see where there is to get to.
The moon is no door. It is a face in its own right,
White as a knuckle and terribly upset.
It drags the sea after it like a dark crime; it is quiet
With the O-gape of complete despair. I live here.
Twice on Sunday, the bells startle the sky –
Eight great tongues affirming the Resurrection.
At the end, they soberly bong out their names.

The yew tree points up. It has a Gothic shape.
The eyes lift after it and find the moon.
The moon is my mother. She is not sweet like Mary.
Her blue garments unloose small bats and owls.
How I would like to believe in tenderness –
The face of the effigy, gentled by candles,
Bending, on me in particular, its mild eyes.

I have fallen a long way. Clouds are flowering
Blue and mystical over the face of the stars.
Inside the church, the saints will be all blue,
Floating on their delicate feet over cold pews,
Their hands and faces stiff with holiness.
The moon sees nothing of this. She is bald and wild.
And the message of the yew tree is blackness –
blackness and silence.
>>
>>25630874
told you im the wrong one to judge.

i can take this entire paragraph:

The yew tree points up. It has a Gothic shape.
The eyes lift after it and find the moon.
The moon is my mother. She is not sweet like Mary.
Her blue garments unloose small bats and owls.
How I would like to believe in tenderness –
The face of the effigy, gentled by candles,
Bending, on me in particular, its mild eyes.

pointy trees, gothic shape, eyes see moon. moon is mother, mother not sweet
insead voyeuristic opening the night gown releasing night creatures, longing for motherly affection of the nature etc. etc.
but hoohoo blackness and silence. see, i have to untie and put meaning wheras she uses symbols without letting them in. its a thing, comma thing type of poem. and i stand by it, her poems lack marrow.
>>
>>25630888
Nigger do you go around in nature and trees scream at you of their sorrow? I guess it's your choice if you go around reading poetry as a game of scrabble in which your objective is to "put meaning" into everything you see. If you have to be objective and brainy about everything you read I guess fiction (and life in general) is not somewhere you belong. Last time you saw a beautiful sunset did you ask yourself "what do the clouds mean?"? If that's you you can go read some wittgenstein or some cantor treatise. Nigger

>her poems lack marrow
Just because I want to give your expired dusty soul a chance of being understood. Whose poems do you think are marrowfull? Any examples?

Why did she do it
>>
>>25631190
>abusive husband who blatantly cheated on her for two years
>left to take care of two brats alone in a cold flat in jolly old England
>isolated from friends and family back in US
>history of bipolar and probably suffered from bipolar postpartum
>struggled between the demands of motherhood and her career as a writer

The mistress also committed suicide because Ted Hughes is evil.

The bell jar was pretty goddamn hilarious. It's like this caricaturized view of absolutely everyone in her environment. Everybody in that book is exaggerated to the point that they're all just fucking clowns. As a character, she does almost nothing. She's extremely passive. She's just surrounded by interesting dickheads. It's perfect.
>>
Her poetry is extremely good and that's really where you should be focusing if you're interested in her at all. There's really nothing else like it.

I don't really want to, or can't. Poems are pretty short, you can flip through her collection of poetry and read a few. If it's not your thing, you'll know it pretty quickly.

Living in harmony, harmony, oh love.

>>25631358

>>

Had to study her poetry in school, found it to be very bleak, depressing stuff. Life's not so bad surely.
>>
>>25632144
this is the contemporary literature voice and you WILL learn to like it
>>
>>25632299
No it's not, but her poems are the most accurate insight into the neurotic female mind.
You will inevitably have to deal with this as an adult, so it's best to prepare for it in school.
