that makes you think William H Gass is an "amazing writer?" Do I really have to be the anon to break the illusion and pull the wool from people's eyes? The Tunnel is one of the most grating books I've ever read. It's genuinely so bad it tarnishes anything good Gass might have written, such as his essays or The Pedersen Kid. I'm convinced it's a sick joke at our expense and while he was still alive he couldn't BELIEVE it was so critically acclaimed. It's like he's shit testing us to see how much we can swallow. Every single clause, not just every sentence but every clause has alliteration. It doesn't stop, he never lets up with it. Not once. There's so much alliteration it actually chokes out anything else that's interesting he might be doing with his prose. I actually really hate him now. Plus this really didn't age well with the whole "you are ontologically evil if you are a goyim" message.

I'm reading it now, it's a slog for sure. I don't hate it, and the structure is pretty interesting, but it's not been an enjoyable read so far by any means. The prose itself is fine, but I've noticed the alliteration you mentioned, and I can see how that would be irritating. This is also the first thing I've read by Gass, so I have nothing to compare it to. We'll see how it goes.

I want to read this but i'm italian.
I've only read 2 or 3 books in english in my life.
Is it hard?

I read "On Being Blue" by him which was a philosophical essay about the color blue lol. I could be retarded but he seemed to write it from the standpoint that his personal intuitions and interpretations weren't subjective which was honestly a lot of fun. I make music so I've got a big internal dictionary of what certain musical ideas mean to me personally and that determines how I utilize them, so it was cool to read someone else try to showcase something similar. At least that's how I read it. I could totally see a novel by him being completely insufferable though, the thing I read was definitely sort of dense and winding, and felt almost psychotic at points.
I've got a copy of "Eyes" by him that I want to try at some point, I'll keep this post in mind going into it lol

If you're an ESL with only 3 English books under your belt then yes it'll be very hard but don't get discouraged, if you want to read it then read it and maybe it'll be easier for you than I'm estimating.

His essays are decent, his novels (specificaly Middle C and The Tunnel) are neverending cascades of alliteration extolling the virtues of Jews and how they can never ever be wrong and condemning the sins of goyim and how they can never ever be right. There is some good writing buried under the nonsense.

can you expand on what you're trying to say? I need my Jews literati to be completely neurotic and torn with self doubt

Not hard, just tedious stream-of-consciousness for 1000 pages.

>definitely sort of dense and winding, and felt almost psychotic at points
It could be a highly entertaining style if the subject weren't so pathetic.

I've got a bit of gas in my tunnel right now
