Ishmael is an unreliable narrator and you are meant to laugh at him for accidentally marrying a savage, getting boned on his ridiculously long lay, and being convinced that whales are a fish despite it being well known at the time that they were mammals. It is not subtle about the nods to gay shit and it's not meant to be. Ishmael is immensely naive about everything and makes things sound grander than they are, especially Ahab and the white whale. That's the whole joke.
