This is so poorly written that it punishes the reader for every page turned. Anyone who praises it discredits themselves. Much like The Turner Diaries. They're only worth reading as unintentional comedy.

Sinclair Lewis was a moderate liberal who supported FDR and the New Deal

>Remember our Red scares and our Catholic scares, when all well-informed people knew that the O.G.P.U. were hiding out in Oskaloosa, and the Republicans campaigning against Al Smith told the Carolina mountaineers that if Al won the Pope would illegitimatize their children? Remember Tom Heflin and Tom Dixon? Remember when the hick legislators in certain states, in obedience to William Jennings Bryan, who learned his biology from his pious old grandma, set up shop as scientific experts and made the whole world laugh itself sick by forbidding the teaching of evolution? . . . Remember the Kentucky night-riders? Remember how trainloads of people have gone to enjoy lynchings?

This wasn't written by a chud lmao

The depressing thing is, the idea of a visible tyrant has became rather quaint in the same manner that the idea of the capitalist pig with a cylinder and a cigar is quaint. Neither political oppression nor economic exploitation have a face or a visible structure anymore, but rather work in the manner of an invisible and semi-intangible octopus where it is difficult to tell where it starts, ends, or how long it has been in the room with you, or how you would even go about fighting it.

Not sure if this is bait: looking at all the chaos instigated by one guy (the Nameless One), and the mass of massively armed doomsdayers, I can't really take your comment seriously.
So I'll pivot to a few other examples that deal with fictional presidents and the consequences.
A Cool Million/Nathaniel West
The earnest dupes and charlatans that sacrifice them to feed their ego...many such cases.
The Plot Against America/Philip Roth
If you understand the context of the times in which these tales take place, then you might get more out of them.
Consider the USA's neutrality during both World Wars, while their industrial rivals blew the absolute shit out of each other. In Roth's story, aviator Charles Lindbergh is elected by steadfastly refusing to get involved in WW2...no friend of the International Jew...no spoilers.
In a sublimely ironic way, you're making his point: don't think that you're not connected to the stream of history (rebellion-war-reconstruction-repeat) or that your system is impervious to collapse. Consider the term 'fit for office' and the importance of the role of PUSA for the rest of the World. The fact that a person who has never not been completely about himself can get the job where you 100% have to think about the welfare of everyone else is a sad, smelly way to crash the whole thing down upon itself.
Generally enjoy Lewis and don't hear him mentioned much. Give Elmer Gantry a try, I might get around to reading Babbit...also Nathaniel West is worth a look.
Honourable Mention: The Man in the High Castle/PKD

Ok, I'll give you one other point. They're also worth reading to realize how insane the right actually is. But you don't need to go further than the first chapter of either book. Anyone who praises either discredits themselves.

The political satire in this was really good until the military coup.

It can't happen here. A military coup can't happen here. We are too broad and bureaucratically entrenched for a military coup.

Cool book but making the fascist analogue based off Huey Long was lazy, as Long was not a fascist or equivalent to Hitler but was one of the few politicians in this country that actually worked for his constituents doing whatever it took
>>
>>25636133
it was more to show how those tactics could be used to manipulate the electorate. i agree long wasnt a fascist, he was a left wing populist, but remember mussolini and hitler also at times appropriated left wing rhetoric

It'd be like some neocon asshat writing a book about Mamdani enacting a new holocaust. When's Daily Wire dropping that?
>>
>>25636208
Let's not get carried away. Sinclair Lewis was a legtimately good writer, and the book was interesting and a thoughtful exercise, it's not as much of a caricature as that would be, even though reducing Long to a mere equivalent of an "American Hitler" is dishonest.

>It can't happen here. A military coup can't happen here. We are too broad and bureaucratically entrenched for a military coup.

This is slop thinking. Of course a military coup, or something like it, could happen. All that matters is who has the most guns, that's all that's ever mattered. Anyone who legitimately controlled the US military could also control the Navy and the Air Force, which would give them the reach to subjugate North America. The glowies trying to stop it wouldn't work either, since they DON'T have enough guns.

Especially if it were a right-wing military coup, because most civilian gun owners are right-wingers and would probably approve of the action, so you'd have no foundation for an armed resistance except in, maybe, Vermont.
>>
>>25636530
>give them the reach to subjugate North America
This is like arguing that a coup in France would subjugate Ireland. Absolute nonsense.
>>
>>25636562
Who's gonna resist? The average American? The fat retards you see around you every day?

Maybe 100 years ago when America was fitter and whiter and more ferocious, it would fail. Modern America lacks the will to oppose a genuine coup. They are where Rome was by the time Caesar came along, the thing Spengler talks about: they are exhausted as a people and thus able to be subjugated under the will of one man.

>Who's gonna resist? The average American?
Do you remember Hurricane Katrina?
What they didn't televise during that hurricane is that Americans began shooting at 'looters' because they were raping everyone. The feds tried to send in the national guard and take their weapons away, but the natives had already created checkpoints and temporary bases to protect themselves from roaming gangs of 'looters'.
The US military is good at precision strikes and decapitating leadership. It's real shit at urban conflicts, which is what Afghanistan, Iraq etc have already proven. They couldn't control the US through sheer military force, which is why propaganda is necessary.

do you not have friends or family members in the military? I can guarantee there will never be a military coup in the US as long as the military is the way it is right now. service members don't give a fuck about whatever "mission" their officers talk about, democracy or the constitution. They just want their paychecks to pay off their car loans and credit card debt. Bonus points for getting a real (or fake often enough) disability during their service time for more money.

Remember all the outrage from service members when a former al-Qaeda fighter and leader of an Islamist militant group, and the current president of Syria, went into the White House? Remember when Petraeus, who was head of US forces in Iraq when al-Sharaa was imprisoned for being an AQ fighter, said he was a fan of his?

There was no outrage. They didn't give a fuck. They spent 20 years fighting the GWOT and didn't say a fucking word when an al-Qaeda fighter took control of a country neighboring our "GREATEST ALLY" and got to walk around the White House.
