>>

Zero came out before Destiny, and Shinn Asuka got his name because it matches Kira Yamato (death/kill + Japanese historical period).

The real dank lore is that Suzumura’s first VA role was in 7 as one of Gamlin’s mooks, and Kawamori cast him as the lead in the next Macross show.
>>
was including Focker even necessary? he does not add anything to the plot. You only get a vague implication that one of the guys in the evil planes was his flight instructor but that's it.

so the birdman was an alien? it obviously was something comlpetely different from the zentraedi and the vajra

where the fuck did Sara and Shin go? why the head even reacted when he and Mao kissed underwater? in fact, Sara and Mao were some kind of ESPers or anything?

so many questions that are left unanswered

Original Macross pioneered that, you need to credit the grandaddy

That finale was actually even harder to stomach back in the day since it took something like 8 months to get it after the previous episode
Really feels like the whole thing was unplanned and they threw shit at the wall for the finale since it straight up ignores the previous episodes cliffhanger

Also I think the CG is fine, if anything it's biggest flaw is they try to much for what it's capable of. SV-51 is over detailed and the flapping wings is just too much, there's a bunch of scenes where they had to fall back to 2d animation, etc. Frontier really perfected it by having a better handle on what they could do with it.

>>
>>23870168
You are misreading that post. New Macross places very little emphasis on the mechanics of the universe, and taking the time to show the audience a semi-realistic transformation.

Newer Macross shows just have the pilot press a button or flip a lever. Then the whole plane uses CGI to transform in a split second. It's like the Director just wants to get passed the transformation as quickly as possible like it's a inconvenience getting in the way of telling his Idol story. When in previous Macross the tranformation and mecha was one of the most popular parts of the anime.

If you bought the Gundam Seed Freedom Blu-ray Directors cut, you watch interviews with the Director and staff. Director Fukuda repeatedly emphasized that it's important for the audience to understand how mecha move and operate. It's why in the first half of Seed Freedom, he intentionally slowed down the transformation speed of multi form mecha like Rising Freedom, Immortal Justice, new Murasame suits, etc. Fukuda said it's important to establish clarity and understanding first with the audience by showing how each piece transforms and moves. Then Fukuda sped up transformation in the second half of the movie when the audience already understands everything.

But Modern Macross doesn't do any of that and it's why some fans are really annoyed with how the mecha aspect of Macross has been treated in recent years. There's too much focus on the idol and love story aspect.

They definitely showed a lot of mecha in frontier, in fact I think it's the last modern mecha anime to have large scale battles. Seed freedom's final battle and the engagement in the foundation city are just a bunch of 1v1 or 1v3 skirmishes, but in wings of goodbye they're actually fighting a whole planet of bugs.
>>
>>23880818
>They definitely showed a lot of mecha in frontier
Yes but they got really sloppy in Frontier when it came to choreography. The mecha action didn't make sense when you think about it too deeply. It's more rooted in looking cool than making realistic sense. Even Itano openly criticized Frontier and hated the battle scenes.

I'm pretty sure that "Itano hated Frontier" stuff ended up being a faked interview made up by a forum troll

Also, just a completely bizarre claim, Frontier was the most mecha centric the franchise had been since the original, if you're looking for a series that on no level cared about it's mecha content, that's 7.
>>
>>23882163
>I'm pretty sure that "Itano hated Frontier" stuff ended up being a faked interview made up by a forum troll
No its real. Itano said the directors didn't think the actions scenes through properly and focused too much on idol drama for Frontier. He said the idol drama was only a small part of the original Macross, and the story was more even split about survival, mecha action, and love romance. But frontier went too far in one direction.

Itano even pointed out examples by saying a sniper Valkyrie makes no sense in fronter. Targets are constantly moving. And why would a sniper Valkyrie mount itself on a moving asteroid. It would be impossible to hit anymore with the Asteroid always moving through space.

A lot of little complaints like that. Which to be fair is a valid complaint.
>>
>>23882214

Sounds to me it's the military otaku versus mecha otaku issue, when it comes to the VF variant concepts at least. First generation real robot creators weren't lifelong real robot fans, so they weren't iterating on the same pool of influences further and further divorced from their original concepts and contexts.
Love my marksman mobile suit variants but I agree, a sniper variable fighter just doesn't really work for me.

Yeah but he has no right to say that when raining missile also makes no sense. Also more idol stuff is probably a result of having more limited episode and the otaku music industry being radically different from the 80s. At least it's handled rather realistically when you compare it to typical idol anime, like how sheryl and ranka's popularity boom are partly because of grace's push.
I hate delta's idol gimmick so much especially since everyone other than mikumo and freyja are as important as the ship crew side characters from prior macross. It's like if canaria and cathy from frontier are also marketed as the idols lmao.

Everything in Macross is secretly about the Protoculture but they never really do anything with it. It's all weird background lore that basically doesn't matter.

SDF Macross is actually a tertiary conflict of the Zentradi - Supervision Army War.

Macross 7 is a restart of the Protodeviln War.

Macross Zero is about a Protoculture probe meant to guide human evolution and intervene if humanity gets too warlike.

Macross Frontier is about an alien race that influenced the Protoculture.

Macross Delta is about Protoculture ruins (?)

It's protoculture all the way down. But you'd barely know any of this from any of the shows because of how ineptly the exposition is handled.

I'd like to think the ending of Macross Zero is the two characters being space-folded to the Protoculture home world to serve as emissaries of Humanity. But... That's never followed up on. Maybe they were space folded to the protoculture home world but the home world was destroyed in the protodeviln war so they died in empty space.

You know, if you gave Kawamori a X-wing pilot's helmet, he'd just be Japanese Wedge.

Absolute twat take. But ya Heroic Age did it better if "everything is about the protoculture". But it ain't.

Macross loves introducing pointless new things in each series

There are some good anime but yeah, most are hilariously bad.

Macross is in this weird situation where it could always expand on its previously established lore, but each new series wants to focus on new stuff, which ends making everything feel convoluted.
>>
>>23919229
that and also the fact that each new series is worse than the one that came before it, with the exception of Frontier
>>
>>23919241
Finally someone talking about Macross without the wool pulled over their eyes. OG, Plus were godlike, 7 was more like a Saturday morning cartoon, Zero felt checked out of and phoned in, but Frontier was great, then back to Delta and it was poop.

I mean Zero wasnt that good so that aint saying much. It was good though but not as solid as OG Macross. The new shows, Frontier included have this bad habit of fucking up by miniturizing the idols' social life and try to explain the girls' motives too much.

Did they manage to come to an agreement with Harmony Gold or have they finally fucked off for good?
>>
>>23920465
Harmony Gold never had any control over DYRL but bluff their way into making people think they did. Their bootlickers would also scapegoat Toho being the distributor as the reason why the movie was "untouchable" for years.

>Talking about realism in the show that has an ancient organic death being that awakens as a fail safe to destroy all of humanity
Macross Zero and 08th MS Team have convinced me that we need to eradicate jungle settings. You put a mech in a jungle and for some reason it causes a million "muh realism" retards to crawl out of the woodwork. Even funnier that he's saying this when the Macross series that came before Zero was fucking 7 which had just as much of a focus on magic music as Frontier and Delta, if not more, but I guess it's only a problem if it's idol music. That's also not even taking into account that 7's main villains were giant monsters with supernatural abilities.
>>
Watching the original Macross (ep 18) and what the hell, Roy didn't even make it to the episode 20s.
>>
>>23920550
I think more than anything that people are really, really fucking bad at articulating what they like about things and why they find other things to not satisfy them in the same way.
What we really need to do is ban the word realism from mecha discussion.

Where's this event being held?
>>
>>23920557
Your point being?
>>
>>23914329

Actually a bit backwards. The Protocultures created the Zentradi for proxy warfare between their political divisions; the Protodeviln were an accident while they were trying to create next-generation EVIL-series Zentradi to outmatch their previous creations in combat.
>>
>>23922208
I was just expecting him to last way longer than that.
>>
>>23920557
The original Macross when through a lot of mid-production changes from a full 50 episodes to 24 to 36. Roy dying ep18 might have been before they got the approval for 36 episodes.
>>
>>23922242
Why'd they cut it?

What do you care? You're not going there.
>>

Then go watch Delta (preferably the movies), Mikumo borders on shameless on her diva behavior, but it does have a reason, kinda.
>>
>>23924970
Why the movies?
>>
>>23925511
NTA but a lot of people liked the movie version of Delta more than the TV show. The second film is also in this weird spot where it adapts bits and pieces of the show that didn't make it into the first film while also being a sequel, it's like a movie adaption of an S2 that doesn't exist.
Personally I think Delta's overhated. If/when the new Sunrise show happens I'm curious if no longer being 'the new one' or I guess 'the most recent one' now will change how people talk about it.
>>
>>23925530
And why is the series so hated?
>>
>>23926891
Many reasons but a big one is the general drop off in quality of the story on the second half, feels like it should had stopped on the 13 episode mark, maaaaybe at 18 but that's a very generous stretch.

>>23926891
It's just boys who think girls have cooties.

Both the other replies hit the main points. It gets a little muddled in the third act and the 'too much idolshit' crowd didn't like the approach it took to things.
They're not wrong but I liked the in-universe evolution of having an explicitly militarised idol unit and how it helped keep that stuff tied into the primary plot more directly. I think some entries can get a little too lost in the music scene subplots at times.
It could've done more with it but I really liked the politics. This is the first time we've really seen an outside perspective on the NUN and seeing the various ways that people can interpret the way that 'we're here and we're understanding and friends now fuckers' can be interpreted and how they can fumble it was cool. Same with juxtaposing the expansion of their popular culture and a fairly mainstream idol group against the 'retvrn to tradition' stuff the Windmereians have going on.
Some people dislike that it functionally doesn't have a love triangle, personally I really liked the main couple and was glad the show gave them more room to breathe versus Frontier's comical degree of keeping things in the air.
Keeping things a little vague deliberately, and annoyingly the films actually change some of these parts a little.

Obviously it's not perfect but I think the reputation in the western fanbase is self-reinforcing. People hear it's the bad one and see people talking shit about it and go in expecting not to like it, looking for the things people told them suck about it and focusing on them from that perspective.
You would think people would have learned by now that every entry is wildly different and go along for the ride a little more.

NTA but my personal issue was that the show basically wastes your time with Mirage to "mirage" a love triangle/completely one sided unrequited love and Frejya has too much of that over the top life or death anime stuff with her issues being extreme situation slop rather than having issues of getting enraptured by the life of an idol or in general of just being a girl. Everything else is better than anything involving those characters but at the end of the day its still a rather bland show and I think Kawamori forgot to change gears from Aquarion back to Macross.

If theres one particularly praise worthy point its that the music is catchy but amongst the TV shows anyone should struggle to put Delta as anything but dead last. Yes even 7 is more endearing.
