What is Tomino's obession with Australia all about?Out of all of the real life locations depicted in UC media, Australia appears the most.Is he still pissed we kicked their asses in WW2?
When I went to Japan most of the other white tourists were from Australia and they were all unbelievable assholes. The lady who brought a double stroller onto the ferry to Miyajima during Golden Week can go fuck herself. Your kids are too young to remember that, and you're needlessly taking up space. Fuck off and die.
That's New York you retard.
>>23778757>That's New York you retard.
>>23778757>That's New York you retard
>>23778743colony had to drop somewhere, it ended up being australia. 0079 is a ground breaking anime so every other subsequent mecha show pay homage to it by cucking convicts off the map.funny thing is 0079 doesn't even mention that it was australia, that was a later addition in the lore by the time of 0083.
>>23778780You sure that was a 0083 invention and not something that was addressed in the early 80s setting material?
>>23778782I didn't mean 0083 specifically, but it was definitely canonized around the late 80s-early 90s timeframe iirc.
>>23778743Actually, It was like 100 Colonies dropped on Earth in the first series. At least in Tomino's head. He just depicted only one of them crashing to Earth in the show for aesthetic reasons. That's how 5 billion people died in the first few days of the war. Tomino estimated 1.2-1.3 billion casualties for each crashed Sides (except Sides-3,6,7).Then the first wave of retcons came in. the war is now called the One Year War and just one colony dropped on Earth etc.Sydney retcon came especially when people other than Tomino made 0083.
>>23778911>Then the first wave of retcons came in. the war is now called the One Year War and just one colony dropped on Earth etc.despite being off screen, One Year War, One Week War and Loum Battle were already part of the setting when the show was airing.
>>23778911I always preferred it being a single colony that dealt that kind of damage. It sells just how horrific even a single colony impacting the Earth (in multiple faster, smaller pieces) could deal such heinous damage. It is part of why Gundam X’s portrayal felt like it really undersold just how destructive dozens of them hitting the planet would be, with civilization and nature recovering so quickly in 15 years.
>>23778920nope. not for "OYW" which was coined in by the Animec magazine editor Komaki in an interview with Tomino after the show ended.and yes, One Week War and Battle of Loum had been there since the project was called GunBoy.
It's more a side result of Tomino's average Japanese fixation on Brazil. Brazil having a large number of Japanese diaspora, it's not uncommon to have it be a mentioned in Japanese stories, which is why Jaburo(vaguely in Brazil, originally) is the EF military headquartersse. But the colony drop had to miss Jaburo and Australia was reasonably within the southern hemisphere that would also be recognizable as an area where such destruction could be visibly measured
>>23778757No, I don't know why the right-facing fish heads are upside down; take it up with the anon who shopped it.
>>23779250There you go.
>>23778782Gundam Century established it. In Tomino's version pretty much all the major cities got hit by colonies. Actually G Eternal mentions too this and said the colonIES of Side 2 were used to major cities all across earth. So they're retconning it to Tominos original vision.
>>23778911Sydney is not from 0083. Gundam Century.
>>23778743>Is he still pissed we kicked their asses in WW2?You retards couldn't beat a chocobo
>>23778780>cucking convicts off the mapThat would explain why the rest of the wreckage bombarded the US.
>>23779251They're still upside down, just now their eyes are on their lower jaws.
>forgets a certain Gainax anime that shat on Oz even worse.
The hidden villain from Tomino's Dunbine "Shot Weapon" was an American whose family fled to Australia where he was forced to do backbreaking labour. After developing Aurabattlers in byston well, his goal was to bring these super weapons to upper earth so he could use them to raze Autsralia and America to the ground
>>23779270Not only that, but it was generally understood that it was New York which had the colony dropped on it, as Tomino wrote in the first Gundam novel:>It was because Zeon also implemented its diabolical colony crash strategy, which consisted of maneuvering the "dead" colony cylinders into Earth orbit, and then decelerating them until they plummeted toward targets on the ground. When the first colony fell on New York, the horrified people of Earth were driven to action. The art director for Gundam even illustrated picrel for one of the Roman Albums. For whatever reason, 0083 went with the Sydney colony drop instead of New York. I've read some Kawamori interviews though and he said the younger staff on 0083 were insistent on making sure the setting didn't deviate from the established lore in Gundam Century, which he thought was funny because to him it was literally fanfiction he made for fun with his Studio Nue buddies.
>>23782736>but it was generally understood that it was New York which had the colony dropped on itBut the setting notes said multiple colonies were dropped, and the wording from your novels even says "When the first colony fell" which implies multiple colonies were dropped>For whatever reason, 0083 went with the Sydney colony drop instead of New York.Wasn't that because of 0080 and not 0083?>which he thought was funny because to him it was literally fanfiction he made for fun with his Studio Nue buddies.Don't blame Kawamori, it's Hiroyuki Hoshiyama's fault since he supervised the Gundam Century databook project. They gave him the job since he was the original chief writer for the MSG TV series.
>>23782750>But the setting notes said multiple colonies were dropped, and the wording from your novels even says "When the first colony fell" which implies multiple colonies were droppedMaybe I could've been clearer, but what I meant to say was that the one colony drop depicted in the anime was supposed to be New York.>Wasn't that because of 0080 and not 0083?Nah, 0080 never once mentioned a colony drop. 0083 was when there was actual on-screen confirmation.>Don't blame Kawamori, it's Hiroyuki Hoshiyama's fault since he supervised the Gundam Century databook project. They gave him the job since he was the original chief writer for the MSG TV series.Anon I don't know where you're getting the impression I'm blaming Kawamori, I just thought it was an amusing anecdote how the Gundam fans who worked on 0083 venerate Gundam Century, even though the guy who actually helped create it didn't even take it that seriously. I've also read about how Kenichi Matsuzaki (also a scriptwriter for Gundam and worked on Gundam Century) did it for fun and never meant for it to be official:>However, the fact that it ended up becoming an ‘official’ record of Gundam was something that even at the time caused a bit of confusion for Sunrise, who had granted permission. Perhaps because of that, Kenichi Matsuzaki, who was involved in the project and also wrote scripts for the main series, would often say, "That was just a bit of fun for grown-ups" whenever the subject came up (laughs).
>>23778743Tomino needed a country that wouldn't affect the world if it were destroyed or damaged. So the United States, Europe, Japan (obviously), and North America were off the table. But the country still needed to be relevant enough that people would still care if it were destroyed or partially partially. No one cares if the colony drop hits Africa or Iceland. So the only option left that fits both categories is Australia. It's still a first world country but not so relevant that the global order would collapse if Australia is eliminated.
>>23782861IIRC the only mention of Sydney in 0080 is when Bernie lies to the Fed soldier and says he's from there.
>>23778743They are cunts. They also lost to emus
>>23778743About a month before First Gundam premiered a space colony (Skylab 1) crashed inyo the Earth off course from where it was actually meant to land and hitting Australia IRL>>23778946IMO it feels like Tomino did the math during development and figured that it would be more REALISTIC for just one colony of that size to cause global scale devestation.
>>23786183yeah no, that's literally new york in the illustrations aboveby the time they decided on australia, tomino literally was not the person working on the production that decided to make it australia
>>23786318>IMO it feels like Tomino did the math during development and figured that it would be more REALISTIC for just one colony of that size to cause global scale devestation. It feels like it was the other way around. He seemed to think it was more damaging initially and then regret that and thought they'd need multiple colonies. Probably due to the colonies lacking mass and speed in spite of their size. You can see how comparatively irrelevant the colony drop in ZZ was.
>>23786329>You can see how comparatively irrelevant the colony drop in ZZ was.tell that to Seamus O'Connell you spacenoid fuck
>>23787289what's some guy in Boston have to do with the caliphate of Ireland?
>>23778743what's with this site's obsession with describing any element of any story as the author having some irrational obsession
It's not a Tomino thing, you can trace anime influences back to popular sci-fi of the time from decades past. Not just destruction of Australia, the common interest in Jupiter, psychics, etc.
>>23786326>yeah no, that's literally new york in the illustrations above >that's literally new york >new york>Sydney opera houseYou have low IQ
>>23788333I do not remember the twin towers being in Australia.
>>23786329>Probably due to the colonies lacking mass Wtf is this nonsense? Colonies have enormous mass. Did you do any basic research on Gundam?
