I'm not sure if she's the very first female real robot protagonist but she's certainly the first to be the face of something so big, and to this day there's not a whole lot of others. I could see people worrying she's too recognisable to do anything else mecha. Also possible most of the parts in the genre available just don't appeal to her. Not a whole lot of precious genki dumbasses who get such a breadth of material. Mimmy did meet the Gundam once so that kinda counts.
She's in Snatcher and the 2003 Astro Boy too which gets you a little more representation.

I've started watching the OVAs. Can I get an an explanation about why japs are so anal about the differences between cops and the military? Usually most people (in the west) are either pro-both or anti-both, so this weird framing of the police as the noble everymen and the JSDF as your globalist boogeymen is very weird to me
>>
>>23878445
Japan is a weird case where a warrior culture got smacked in the mouth so hard that it went pacifistic. How writers and artists cope with the violence of the old ways and the pacifism of the new varies wildly, but generally speaking there's a sense of compartmentalisation. The police defend within, the military defend without, and that line is sacred.

As for what's going on in Patlabor, there's a few inspirations. Japanese history is rife with coups of various kinds, and the 20th century is no exception. The military tended to view itself as a government of its own, constantly butting heads with the wishes of the civilian leadership because of Muh Honour and so on. Further divisions existed within the military itself, with the downright deadly rivalry between the Army and Navy during WW2 being the most infamous.
All that shit was very much still within living memory when Patlabor was written. The idea that the military could go 'Fuck this' and take control of the country was something that people KNEW could happen.

Patlabor 2 in particular emphasises at one point that the last time Japan had been in a true war, it was very much on the wrong side of things, allied with the literal fucking Nazis and committing atrocity after atrocity. And what did that get them? Their entire country burned to the ground, because they picked a fight they could not win.
And even as the Emperor himself was about to announce the formal surrender of his country, a group of military officers still tried to mount a coup to prevent it, being more willing to see their people wiped from existence by nuclear fire than deal with the disgrace of surrender.
So, there's a paranoia about Crazy Military Officers fucking the country over wild ambitions and trying to justify their own militarism.
The police are not subject to this kind of concern, and they are actively structured to reduce the potential violence they can dish out.
>>
>>23878526
Japanese police officers are still to this day issued with old-school revolvers rather than the typical Glocks and Sigs that cops around the world get nowadays. The idea is that when you only have six rounds at a time and reloading is an involved process, you'd have to make every one of those bullets count. Every shot must be calculated, every fired round accounted for. The JSDF has a similar philosophy, being particularly anal about catching brass and keeping track of exactly how many bullets they've been firing during exercises.
That's the reason why the Police Labors are fitted with scaled-up versions of existing police weapons rather than the integrated autocannons that the military's mechs get. They are intentionally gimping themselves to encourage discipline and reduce collateral damage. Imagine how disastrous Ota would be with an automatic weapon.

>>23903201
Thanks, I'm really obsessed with Patlabor and I wanted to support Headgear's ambitions with EZY. I want all fans to be able to enjoy it too, so I tried my best to make some decent subs for the past three days. If this encourages a more professional subber to take the job, or even official subtitles, then I consider my job well done.

I think it's more at the expense of the characters, it reflects their own tastes and how they see the other SV2 members.
Honestly excellent shit, and I'm surprised how well it worked for only being the second episode with this cast.
In some ways I wish it was first since that one seemed kind of weak, but I understand wanting to start basic to both establish a baseline and get new viewers up to speed. And you kind of can't do lazy SV2 downtime as the absolute first thing just from a structural standpoint.
>>23904244
Sure as shit better than what we had to put up with for TNG back in the day, based on slop or not. Think you've done about as well as anyone not a proper translator could be expected to.

She's an absolute fucking menace, and I like her a lot. I think the Ota comparisons miss the mark because from what we've seen so far at least, she's an extremely proficient pilot and doesn't let her ADHD tendencies actually compromise her piloting or get in the way when she needs to lock in. Unit 1 has also lost zero heads with her at the controls so far.
I want to see more of her dynamic with Kippei though, doesn't feel like we got a ton of them working together so far. My initial impression is that he's obviously the more sensible one, but he's also not someone that could manage her if she actually needed wrangling and not just prodding. They seem friendly and to work well enough together but I don't think we got enough to nail it down beyond that.

This is Ebikawa's design, right? Is he credited as a mech designer for EZY?
>>
>>23907542
Yeah, I believe Izubuchi thought his style would mesh well with his own
>>
So what's the skinny on EZY? Is it like a cour, movies? Is it out yet?
>>
>>23907704
This is basically the rundown: EZY is 8 episodes long and will be released as compilation films, File 1 is the first three, File 2 is the second three, and File 3 will be the last two acting as a two parter. It's also releasing in Japan physically on blu ray discs, it's essentially an OVA. Originally, each episode would've been 50 minutes long, basically Gundam Unicorn but for Patlabor, but I believe something happened during production. Thanks to this though they have lots of scripts and plotlines in reserve, and Izubuchi has shown interest in doing more if EZY does well.

>I think the Ota comparisons miss the mark because from what we've seen so far at least, she's an extremely proficient pilot and doesn't let her ADHD tendencies actually compromise her piloting or get in the way when she needs to lock in.
No Ota is the second best pilot next to Noa. However he is abit of a corrupt cop as he likes to use reckless violence on the target. In one of the episode, he got framed for murder and almost everyone in town believed it because he has such a bad reputation.
>>
>>23905414
>>23907960
Yeah, we also saw in one ep that Ota's retardedly good at marksmanship, it's just that he spergs out when dealing with actual suspects and hitting moving targets is surprisingly hard
>>
>>23907960
>>23907969
He's not a bad pilot when he can keep his shit in check, but I don't think we're ever given reason to believe he's exceptional or anything. Beyond his marksmanship and ability to avoid shooting civilians anyway. That, and he's so bad at keeping his shit in check that it's actively compromising his ability to perform on the regular. He's a solid labor pilot in a vacuum but a bad patlabor pilot.
>>
>>23907973
>but I don't think we're ever given reason to believe he's exceptional or anything.
Watch the third movie that has a big titty kaiju. Ohta only had one shot to neutralize the monster and he managed to get it done without fucking it up. He is legitimately talented, it is just his temper held him back from greatness.
>>
>>23907985
A moment or two where he shines doesn't outweigh the rest. That he could be better doesn't mean he's actually amazing and it's just a secret.
>>
>>23907988
>A moment or two where he shines doesn't outweigh the rest. That he could be better doesn't mean he's actually amazing and it's just a secret.
It is not a secret, he is qualified for his job or else it wouldn't make sense why an incompetent fool keep doing the job he is not good at.
>>
Kanuka is the worst Ingram pilot, but you are not ready for that conversation.
>>
>>23908022
What, you mean it isn't for the hijinks or laughs? Ota should have been fired for the pileup he created in the first episode of OVA1.

When the amount of incompetence outweighs the the the amount of useful work done, it's a sheer joke why he's not replaced yet.
>>
>>23908022
At this point I don't even know what you're trying to argue. The vast majority of the time he's not shown being a great pilot. This is just fact unless you watched a very different show.
They're able to make Schaft withdraw their SRX-70-for-data deal on their end by simply threatening to assign Ota to it.
I am not talking about what he could hypothetically do if his personality flaws were erased, I am talking about his track record and demonstrated piloting.
>>23908031
He's personally responsible for most of SV2's awful reputation, too. Way beyond the natural collateral of being a labor unit.
>>

>>
>>23908034
>I am not talking about what he could hypothetically do if his personality flaws were erased, I am talking about his track record and demonstrated piloting.
And his track record has many successes. The tv show and OVA are 100% comedy so you don't need think too hard about how a giant robot never kill people by accident or how they never fire Ohta. His team trusted him enough to send him to difficult operations like in Movie 2 and 3 along with Noa. You would think this dude should be excluded from the darker, more serious storylines but nope, he is here to stay.
>>
Let's be real here, 100% of real life polices behave exactly like Ohta, except they actually kill people.
>>
>>23908056
Yes, therefore we should excuse Ota because more officers in real life get away with actual brutality, murders, planting evidence, etc because at heart Ota never meant to do any of those things willingly, he just has anger and self-control issues
>>
>>23908054
Excuse me, the cited storyline about SV2 unit 1 trying to square their material needs for their job with the compromise of their ethics as police demanded to meet them was 100% comedy?
Hell in movie 2 he repeatedly fucks up in the tunnel fight by ignoring orders, charging ahead and not thinking things through.

Reminder that we got here because you disliked that I implied Towa's a better pilot based on what we've seen.
>>
>>23908056
omg ikr acab sis
>>
>>23908034
Across the series Ohta has a pretty good track record of labor neutralization outside of training matches. His marksmanship is the best too. His main drawback is his temper, but when he gets results it's massively to the benefit of the team, like Griffon incident, fighting off hoards of labors on the ark, taking down the IXTLs etc.
>>
>>23908072
>Hell in movie 2 he repeatedly fucks up in the tunnel fight by ignoring orders, charging ahead and not thinking things through.
That was the only thing they could do lol. Even Noa agreed and followed him.
>>

>>
>>23908072
>SV2 unit 1 trying to square their material needs for their job with the compromise of their ethics as police demanded to meet them was 100% comedy
I mean yeah it is. Crashing out because you are afraid of ghost or fantasizing about your glorified police car being a super robot is just so unprofessional, if you want to remove Ohta's flaws then you have to remove every other character's flaws, too.
>>
>>23908085
Towa probably fucks random guys extremely often and this is not the only time she does it. She even licked her lips in the scene.
>>
>>23908089
That's in character for female cops so honestly kinda hot
>>
>>23908079
If you choose to ignore everything else he fucks up in that scene, sure.

It's a little outside of scope here but agreeing with his decision and following him in the charge aren't really the same thing. He basically forced the issue and at that point you either follow him and hope he's right or leave him to get shredded. There was no time pressure so severe it was preventing him from taking an extra ten seconds to suggest it to and get agreement from the other lives he was risking by doing that.
He's not the leader of the element in that situation, nor is he even giving basic warning to everyone else involved, let alone deferring to leadership. If you want to just talk about his performance in a 'serious' scene and hold it up to serious standards then yeah, he's a fucking liability. And don't try and tell me that's unintentional in a movie with the most autistically accurate ground-controlled intercept in cinema.
>>
>>23908096
>If you choose to ignore everything else he fucks up in that scene, sure.
The drones were blasting everything in that tunnel and shooting the cables didn't help. They were like " Ohta, do your thing " even. He popped up in the show all the time, how could you even watch it if you couldn't stand him?

And he fucks that up too, because he did a terrible job of actually disabling the machines once he was in CQB with them. His failure to disarm the second one and instead pointing the cannon at the ceiling is the reason the tunnel floods.
He damages one and assumes it's destroyed, then runs over to tackle the other and immediately shouts for Noa to come bail him out.
>how could you even watch it if you couldn't stand him?
I didn't say I can't stand him. Why would you assume that?
I'm just pointing out how he was always characterised, a decent pilot but absolutely terrible at keeping his shit together to the point it undermines any technical skill he might have. This is consistent through the OVAs, shows, movies and now EZY too.

I'm aware of that, but the show specifically referred to some of the custom labors in use for the film being shot as being built atop Dolphins.
I'm just saying I wasn't sure if that extended to the 'Helldiver' being a body kit on one or if it's a real ARL-99 on loan.
It's pretty common to do stuff like that for films, so either is plausible.
>>
>>23908199
The twitter account confirms it is the original Helldiver with Ingram innerframe.
>>
>>23908199
are ingram-spec machines basically openly available for public purchase? that's a little scary to think about
>>
>>23908216
An Ingram without the people to pilot and maintain an Ingram probably isn't that big an issue in the end. We'll see of course with the rest of EZY but I suspect they never really reached the point that mass market machines compared to high end second gen units. For most use cases you don't really need a machine so capable and with that capability comes price and complexity.
Remember, TV timeline at least, SHI gave up on the concept of a budget Ingram entirely to instead make a better high end unit for current users.

Aviation might be a good comparison. You can legally own some disarmed fighter jets, but the risk of anyone actually doing so, or the people that do trying to do something nefarious with it, are pretty low. Modern small operator and hobby planes have been borderline identical in capability for over half a century, because going more capable means going to a complexity beyond what makes sense for those users, in exchange for capabilities they probably won't really need anyway.
>>
>>23908216
I don't think it is that easy. The movie director has millions of dollars in his hands, reallistically, so buying a Helldiver is not a big issue for him. The average 9-5 citizen are not that wealthy.
>>
>>23907501
is this yuri?
>>
>>23908231
I'm like 99% sure that a Helldiver wouldn't be on the civilian market to begin with, it's probably on loan from the JGSDF.

I'm not sure, I didn't catch his name.
>>
>>23908236

>>

>>
>>23908216
The Saturn and the Economy Mark II are both labors able to be purchased by civilians, both are also considered to be in the Ingram's weight class in performance. Oddly enough the Crabman High Leg Type could be considered around the same weight class, having a surprising amount of fighting capability that challenges Japan's own export laws because of it
>>
>>23908243
Or he probably bought a blank Ingram frame and then made a prop Helldiver out of it.
>>
>>23908110
>>23908120
I wanna ask, how is everyone getting HQ clips of the movie? Is this the exact same deal as Code Geass Rozè or Be Forever Yamato where each movie is actually a compilation of episodes also available in an online streaming service, is that it?
>>
>>23908264
The BD was ripped a few weeks ago now.
And the 'movie' is essentially three OVA episodes. I don't know if they plan on releasing them separately later or something, but for now it's formatted as three discrete segments with their own title cards, but only the one OP and ED.
>>
>>23908265
Wait, so the theatrical release and BD release gap is plain nonexistent?

Just watched EZY, thanks again guys. Holy shit I haven't had this much fun in weeks, I had the biggest dumb smile on my face when everyone was finishing Towa's story in the daily log and and when Ota and Shinshi showed up again!!! God damn I hope this does gangbusters. Really reminded me of why I love mecha in the first place.
>>
>>23909663
Retired Ohta becoming a stuntman is sweet to think about. I want to see where are the rest of the gang.
>>
Should I peek at the new thing or just wait until I've finished the rest?
Oh I can't wait!
>>
I honestly expected to loathe the new characters and really miss the old crew. I still miss the old crew of course but the new roster seems pretty good.

The returning cast was great. I do hope we get to see Noa again, seems likely considering the focus on the Alphonse model kit. Considering her sentiment on wanting to be more than "that girl that likes labors" I wonder if she'll be retired from anything labor related, but roped back in somehow and re-discover her love for them.

I worry they'll just make "horny" a defining character trait for Towa in the future like so much anime/manga have for similar characters, but so far I think she has been cute and great. I liked how Noas sexuality was handled compared to 99% of anime, part of what makes her one of my favorite characters of all time.
>>
>>23909860
Yeah, the new crew is great. I really like Saeki, IMO she was great filling out the 'gotoh' role but in a different way, 'kindly mom who's much smarter than you'd think at first glance.' I'd definitely be just fine with a series as long as the original TV run with these folks. My only complaint is that the OP and ED seem generic, they were *okay* but they seemed like they could be from any other anime rather than capturing the distinctive Patlabor feel I thought Sono Mama did.
>>
>>23909860
Towa seems to be an energetic yet hard to control kind of character, so her horniness might be more of a side effect of that. Making the poster girl the problem child of the group is a fun decision
>>
>>23909860
>I worry they'll just make "horny" a defining character trait for Towa in the future like so much anime/manga have for similar characters, but so far I think she has been cute and great.
Towa's horniness actually outclasses other popular waifus because she actually succumbs to her lust.
>>
>>23909892
You are trying abit too hard to explain why an adult woman with a job actually have sex. It gives her character complexity because the type of loud mouthed, hot headed tomboy character can be abit boring without extra spice on top.

Yeah, Saeki was a highlight. Real "not mad, just disappointed" energy at times lol. Really good character design too, really has that mid 30s working woman look.
>My only complaint is that the OP and ED seem generic
Music wise, I agree. Animation wise, the old OPs and EDs weren't super iconic or over the top either. The TV OP especially was a lot of characters on blank background with credits.

Given it's explicitly in the context of a celebrity crush and I'm reasonably sure that, memes aside, we aren't really meant to assume they actually banged in the middle of an unfolding disaster I wouldn't worry too much.
That being said I'm also reasonably sure an HR violation or two took place in that cockpit.
It's also a callback to both the idol that developed a crush on Noa and the little prince kid that she had to share the cockpit with, and deliberately kind of an inversion of both. Without just putting her directly into a recreation of a situation from the original show it's a good way to demonstrate how she's very different from her predecessor.

In general I think Patlabor's always been very good at leveraging the fact it's SoL-heavy with a cast of adults without it ever feeling gratuitous. I always loved the detail of Noa being by far the best at holding her liquor, you'd never pick her for it without knowing her background and it's not treated as a 'the small cute one does something you don't expect' type punchline.
>>
>>23910116
I don't think so. She licked her lips sexually before banging the guy. And keep in mind, this is the tv show timeline of Patlabor, she will get away with whatever the catastrophe she unleashes.
>>
>>23910116
I had forgotten about that little prince kid, thanks for the reminder. I was just talking about this, I really like how the show seems so reminiscent of the original while still doing its own thing, it's a tough line to walk but the writers did a great job in this attempt.

>In general I think Patlabor's always been very good at leveraging the fact it's SoL-heavy with a cast of adults without it ever feeling gratuitous.
For adults does not mean it has to be super depressing or unecessary violent. Small details like Ohta saluting Kanuka upon her departure or how Asuma tries to hide the fact that he is the real inheritor of Shinohara but decided to be a police instead are things adults would do, the respect for your colleague and the descision to be your own person instead of living in your father's shadow. The consumption of booze or having sex in the cockpit are superficial at best.
>>
>>23911245
I do agree, but those just made me think about how things are typically handled the rest of the time.
Asuma's a great example because instead of making his trauma into his personality, they tried to make it inform who he is. Not just his career path but how standoffish he is with most people, why he gets a bit overprotective of Noa at times, how that turns into snapping the other way when she seriously presses the wrong button once or twice, I could go on.
Point is when they finally explain why it feels like a very logical recontextualisation rather than someone retconning in a tragic backstory seasons into a production. It's also just a neat bit of character writing that the vulnerability he shows by opening up to Noa about it is itself a sign that he's trying to overcome some of the worse tendencies of his it probably contributed to.

EZY doesn't have the same runtime TV did to go so in-depth but there's probably a lot of stuff they could touch on around how being a young adult is different today to 40 years ago, as is the general feeling towards technology and the future. I think EZY ending an episode with 'but in ten years, who knows?' would come off more like a threat than a call for optimism today.
>>
>>23911282
Asuma is just like his dad, no matter how hard he tries to change and deny it. A genius who is unfortunately tonedeaf and hurts the feeling of the people he cares about.

Across the series he gets better in that regard. Later down the line he shifts from finding Noa's personality to be less naive and foolishly optimistic to indulging in her outlook. He was already somewhat attentive, though when it came to Noa specifically, he really did want to push her to advance a career in something she truly did care about. He would always be the one person to try and pull her out of slump when she felt demotivated. Noa's affect on him also is more on the emotional side. She came from a life where both her parents were present and were able to shower her with love and care, and is at first in disbelief Asuma can barely even face his father. Seeing as the topic is far too sensitive, she allows him to open up about it on his own terms—when HE feels comfortable. I could go on and on about it because I do like talking about these characters a lot, but I'd be going on forever
