Anyone who says Super Sentai is superior to Power Rangers in every single way without exception is just still bitter that in 1993-1994 they got stuck with this boring, inconsistent, nonsensical piece of shit and his two nothing sidekicks for their main antagonists, while Power Rangers gave us one of the greatest and most iconic villains in all of science fiction, superhero fiction, and tokusatsu.
Honestly? You are correct here, Zedd especially in season 2 gave off a lasting memorable impression of a sinister dark overlord, even after he was toned down in season 3 onwards, if you wanted to create an iconic villain they did a fantastic job at it. Never really cared about Shaddam, he wasn’t even the leading big bad of the series until the end but hey they still used him in Power Rangers in a humorous way
Yeah, Dairanger's writing is awful, this isn't something that many sentai fans on here contest
>>23856195I always forget MMPR figured out a way to use Shaddam, albeit briefly. Even with the metal face he strikes me as a design they'd want to avoid at all costs.
>>23857028Why? Is it because his outfit kinda looks like a Cenobite?
>>23857050I guess because he's dressed like a Cenobite, also like a BDSM suit (which also is like a Cenobite), plus that they show the actor's face (obviously there was Rita and Scorpina, but the show seemed to shy away from that sort of thing after Season 1)... "Normal guy in leather" just doesn't really match anything else adapted or created for MMPR either before or after. Also the Zord fight they used is fairly short and doesn't even have a proper ending (so there wasn't even the excuse of 'Yeah, the character is iffy, but that Zord fight is so awesome how could we NOT use it in MMPR?') so they kinda had to fudge one with the Thunder Saber. Just doesn't seem worth the trouble to force Shaddam into one scene for no real reason. They could've easily had the Rangers escape the storybook and then just have Zedd randomly create Pot Taoist, Birdcage Vagabond, or Lt. Zilong.
>>23856190Power Ranger faggots are a special level of autistic. I'd love to make fun of you, but frankly I just pity you too much. May god have mercy on your souls.
>>23858295Well I'm sorry it's not the 1,000th thread with a half naked anime girl as the OP image. I'll try better next time.
Zedd is barely even a character beyond going "I'm such a bad guy bro!"This fedora tipping faggot alone mogs the entirety of PR's attempts at villains.
>>23856190Yeah I guess you could say Zedd was a SUPER MEGA WIN for power rangers :^)
Zedd was only fun to watch after he married Rita
>>23858295They're just modern Robotechfags.
>>23856190>one of the greatest and most iconic villains in>tokusatsuSure.>superhero fictionHe'd rank as a C-lister at best.>science fictionNo.
>>23856190Batman and Spider-Man both have at least 10 more iconic villains individually, let alone characters like Doctor Doom or Thanos. Not even close to being one of the greatest.
>>23856190Lord Zedd mogging Shadam doesn't make Powerful Rangers better by itself. Shit, Bulk and Skull mog literally every tokusatsu comic relief ever in my eyes but that doesn't change the fact that Super Sentai as a franchise is the superior OG and PR is but the shadow. Also, in 2021-2023 we got Zenkaiger, Donbrothers and King-Ohger while you got three fucking seasons of Ryusouless: Lame and Gay Edition so what goes around comes around.
>>23856190Shitty b8 thread.
>>23862089Batman sure but Lord Zedd rapes anything from the Spider-Man movies (/co/shit doesn't apply).
>>23862089Spider-man villains are overrated. For all that everyone talks about them, they never really like them enough to buy thngs related to them. It's why you see this push for multiple spider-man. Spider-man villains don't sell, only Spider-man variations do. The exception being Venom, but even that's an obviously Spider-man adjacent design.
>>23856190Zedd is a good design, but I don't think a single design is enough to defend a 30 year old lackluster franchise
>>23862099>the Spider-Man movies>MoviesFuck off
>>23858295More specifically, MMPRfags. They encompass fans of MMPR and Neo-Saban eras.
>>23862357I don't rate any of that shit but you need to go back to /co/.
>>23862053>>23862089To clarify, I wasn't suggesting that Zedd is on the same level as, say, Darth Vader, Thanos, Dr. Doom, or the Joker. But at this point in time, he's pretty recognizable (who doesn't know Lord Zedd, unless you've been living under a rock for the last 30+ years?) and when he teamed up with a DC villain, they considered him roughly on-par with Brainiac. I didn't say he was THE greatest villain ever, but he's definitely up there.
>>23862349That's fair they're definitely not close to Batman villains in popularity, but there's still no way Zedd is on par with Doc Ock or Green Goblin.
>>23856190I cant even argue because all I remember is everyone in Dairanger crumbled to mud in the end. The fucking Kibaranger was annoying and not cool too. I dont even think my kid self would have liked him since I hated what's his face in turbo.
My favorite part of Power Rangers is that they leaned into Lord Zedd and Rita being trailer trash during the Machine Empire.
>>23867419>The fucking Kibaranger was annoying and not cool too. It's stunning how much of a useless load Kou is in Dairanger. He's never around unless the plot is about his stupid mother, he's never around as part of the team in any filler episodes, and half his screen time he's turned evil.
>>23862539You need to go back to grade school and learn to comprehend what you read.
>>23856219Really? I was always under the impression that Dairanger was held in fairly high regard.
>>23861947When he first showed up he was fun to watch in a "Emperor Palpatine/ultimate evil" type way, but that wore off roughly about the same time the Green Ranger powers ran out. Then, yeah, he was boring up until Rita came back.
>>23872786Dairanger is liked because the main 5 have good chemistry and the fight scenes are very good thanks to each character having their own fighting style based off a martial art. Tokusatsu is all about the spectacle especially older shows. People will like it even if the plot is crap so long as it looks cool and in most cases that's basically what happens as most Tokusatsu plot pre 2000s is generic and forgettable at best with stuff like Jetman being a rare exception.
>>23862097I dunno, I thought it was halfway decent.
>>23867419That kid ranger in turbo now looks like pic related, feel old yet?
>>23856190Shadam was the end of an era. After him almost every main villain had a full body costume. There were still villainesses but they also became full costume after go-onger as well. Also I just found out his actor was the VA for Dokoku.
>>23856190So there was 1 case where PR (debatably) had a better character than Sentai? After ninja steel/mega force I literally cannot any PR > Sentai arguments seriously. Like it's obvious that the PR playbook is to either poorly copy the Sentai episode for episode or just try to remake the original MMPR to bank on nostalgia. If PR was actually good ninja steel would actually be better than ninninger and Saban would actually adopt the more unconventional seasons instead of just skipping to Ryousoulgers because it has le dinosaurs, just like MMPR!!! and re-using go go power rangers.I will say however, that the Disney ranger action scenes were better than their sentai counterparts simply because they didn't spam CGI all the time like their sentai counterparts.
>>23879874>1 caseAt least 2, you forget Ransik.Dunno how Lothor compares to his Sentai counterpart, but it's got to be close.
I've never seen Megaranger; how do Dr. Hinelar, Yugande, and Guirail compare to Astronema, Ecliptor, and Darkonda?
>>23879874>the Disney ranger action scenes were better than their sentai counterparts simply because they didn't spam CGI all the time like their sentai counterparts. What in the fuck are you talking about? PR used CGI just as much as Sentai if not more. Also the Kalishplosions were at their height of cringe in the 2000s (yes I know Sakamoto had a hand in that too but they mellowed it out in the later Sentai).
>>23886166>>23886167Found them on X.
>>23878673>wanting to participate
What was the Sentai season where the mechs were specifically called Zords? I also recall a scene where the Red Ranger was fighting solo against the MOTW, which was chainsawing through the Megazord, almost reaching his face.
>>23887959>What was the Sentai season where the mechs were specifically called Zords?Pretty sure you're thinking of Go-Busters (which became Beast Morphers), where "Megazords" is used for both the Rangers' mechs and the enemy's giant robots.
>>23861307Hey, he's also Al Bundy
>>23866941>who doesn't know Lord ZeddProbably most people who were either never into Power Rangers or were born after the craze. So, most people in general don't know him.
>>23886166>>23886167i was wondering which local hero this was but searching mirai for mirai sentai only brings up timeranger
>>23888896No wonder he's dimes.
>>23886170Link, please.
>>23893724I forgot where it is.
>>23886166>>23886167Crap, they're AI.
>>23880579Tau Zant is one of the worst villain bosses of all Sentai. Lothor at least was funny.
>>23890241Sure, but some characters you just know due to pop culture exposure whether you were into the franchise or not. Like I've never watched a single frame of Masters of the Universe or G.I. Joe but I know who Skeletor and Cobra Commander are. I'd say Zedd and Rita have reached that point by now. You could argue they're on the lesser end of it, sure, but I'd say they've firmly crossed the threshold.
>>23895183>Lothor at least was funny.Surprisingly competent, too. I was surprised he was *so* badly outclassed by Mesogog when they fought.
>>23895262Rita, sure. Zedd? No.
this has really got my noggin joggin about how much Rita and Zed have made it into the culture I'll try my nine year old niece next time I'm visitingshe's aware of who Pinhead and Freddy and Lestat and Megatron and Dio and so forth areI think she's got a dim awareness that Power Ranger and Japanese Power Rangers are things but I don't know about anything beyond that.
>>23896453She'll most likely be able to recognize "AHHH! AFTER TEN THOUSAND YEARS I'M FREE! TIME TO CONQUER EARTH!"
>>23896504yeah I'm honestly curiousshe's very knowledgeable about the onlines at large, like she's immediately clocked the cytube user interface while shouldersurfing and been jelly of my kiwifarms patch on my laptop but she at times strikes me as meme deficient, like one time she showed off sucking on a lemon and I sorta leaned into the simpsons thing about shelbyville but she clearly had no idea and was just sucking on a lemon because it was funny
>>23896431this, there's a reason that PR releases aimed at the broader public (the 2017 movie, rita's rewind, once and always) use rita and barely touch zeddzedd is iconic but really only to fans
>>23895183Tau Zant is betrayed and killed by his own subordinate, Sandaaru. Tau Zant ordered Sandaaru as a pawn to gather energy but Satarakura volunteered to do it instead. When Satarakura became a problem, Tau Zant sent Sandaaru to retrieve the energy and effectively eliminate him. Sandaaru carried out the order and saw firsthand how casually Tau Zant discarded a loyal subordinate.
>>23896553To be fair, the franchise's reliance on Rita in recent years borders on character worship and it's annoying and infuriating even to hardcore fans. Even Batman is allowed to fight villains other than the Joker on occasion.
>>238965532017 hardly counts because their "Rita" has no resemblance to actual Rita. They also didn't include Tommy beyond a sequel tease plus Bulk & Skull didn't exist at all.The only reason Zedd wasn't in Once & Always was because he was already in Dino/Cosmic Fury and was arguably better served there.
>>23867419>I cant even argue because all I remember is everyone in Dairanger crumbled to mud in the endThat was basically it. The bad guys were all mud creationed that thought they were an ancient bad guy group, to the point where after Kujaku spends the whole series with one of the villains as old friend turned enemy and dies she briefly returns in spirt with the real Gara who was long dead and never turned evil to basically reveal her entire plot was pointless because she'd only ever interacted with a fake. And then Shadam, who thought he was the creator of all the fake mud people turned out to also be one himself much to his surprise leaving it unanswered just who the hell made all the fake Gorma and why. And then decades in the future the Gorma appear again, somehow despite them not really being real in the main show.Yeah Dairanger's writing just fell apart in the last episodes. I'm pretty sure the writers said they just wanted to do a WTF twist, logic and story be damned because their year was up and it was gonna be replaced with another Sentai and forgotten about anyway. Which kind of shows the kind of nihilistic attitude the staff had about the replaceable nature of the franchise in it's early decade and a half
>>23900561>The only reason Zedd wasn't in Once & Always was because he was already in Dino/Cosmic Fury and was arguably better served there.I'm still mad that Rita, Zedd, and Goldar all got resurrected at roughly the same time but by completely unrelated means, never reunited and interacted, and then all got beaten in dumb ways (Goldar's was probably the most respectable but he was still basically just treated like a tough monster of the week instead of one of the franchise's most iconic villains/characters).
>>23900686I don't know what the caption is supposed to be complaining about? That Rita and Zedd upon returning never had an epic showdown with the original six? There's really nothing that could be helped with that, it's been 30 years and some of them are dead
>>23869488He really suffered from kid actors being heavily restricted, especially in special effects shows. Though there was also the fact that early on they had a hard rule that the Sixth Ranger could not in any way overshadow the main 5 which only really got dropped in Gaoranger
>>23900565>And then decades in the future the Gorma appear again, somehow despite them not really being real in the main show.Huh? This part makes complete sense with the twist. They never revealed who created the mud Gorma, so whoever it was presumably just did it again the future.
>>23901228Neither one got a final epic showdown at all. Zedd basically got defeated by a plot device and Robo Rita by a sudden backstab, and later completely immobilized by the power daggers and then one shot by the power bow.
>>23901228I do believe it was >>23901277 , combined with the fact that both O&A/Cosmic Fury went out of their way to establish that Rita/Zedd could actually fight really well when they were never really shown to be fighters in MMPR (except for that one episode for Zedd), but then gave neither of them a big final fight (against either the MMPR or the Cosmic Fury Rangers). Why establish them as big, badass fighters, then?
>>23901277>"This is for Trini," Zack said before taking revenge and killing Rita, after spending the entire special telling Minh not to take revenge and kill Rita.
Rita saying "kill" in O&A felt very offputting for some reason
>>23903793>Revenge is bad for the soul, eats you up inside>So I'll kill her for you!Seems consistent to me at least.
>>23904135I don't mind Rita saying kill/murder/death for a change as much as I absolutely fucking hate that her final line in the entire franchise is "I'll kill you all!" as opposed to crying out for Zedd or at least something headache-related. PR villains being able to actually talk like normal people and use big boy words was a nice change of pace but Once & Always went too far in the other direction, and with fucking Rita of all characters.>>23904236The problem with that whole arc is that this is Power Rangers; Rita is getting blown up at the end either way. There's never a problem that isn't solved by blowing the monster up. In 30 years, there was never a time where blowing up the monster was shown as a bad thing for ANY reason (unless it was the rare "the monster is actually a good guy" episode). So why pull that shit now all of a sudden? Hell, Zack himself got revenge on a monster once for ruining his date with Angela. So a date is worth avenging but not the death of one of the OG Power Rangers? Fuck off, writers.
>>23901277>Zedd basically got defeated by a plot deviceI'm still mad he didn't at least get to go all "NO ONE DOUBLE CROSSES LORD ZEDD AND LIVES!" and kill Bajillia and Scrozzle before being trapped in the illusion.
also weird how robo-rita's body is actually a possessed alpha and nobody gives a single shit about that
How is this b8 thread still alive?
>>23905782>Billy gets two of his closest friends and partners in the fight against evil fucking murdered and then the special just ends with him going "lol guess I'll do it again."
>>23905799/m/ is a slow board.
Rita is written horribly in Once & Always in general anyway. The choices for her generals are awful, too.
>>23905799The conversation evolved.
>>23856190I watched zyuranger and the first 45 episodes of power rangers and I do like that the characters are closer than the Zyuranger characters, Zyurangers biggest problem was that they spent a lot of time developing one-off children and didn't focus as much on their recurring cast, I feel like it was really made for kids and the culture of going to live shows and being there with the suit actors. That being said I do think Zyuranger has high points with individual episodes that respects the awareness of the audience more than PR, so like in the polution episode a child could become misanthropic because of pollution and Zyu uses that to reframe misanthropy as the villain rather than the pollution itself, PR reframes this entire episode as being about fighting pollution itself, taking a clever twist on a complex emotional idea and turning it into a very simple idea of just recycling and beating up polution. Not to say it's bad, kid shows have a unique aesthetic and I like that but sentai gives a more refreshing take on what an average western kids show would do. I think they're fundamnetally different shows, Zyuranger is the heroes entering the lives of these one off kids and PR is about the daily lives of these highschool kids saving the day. They're different shows telling different stories.
>>23906435At least she isn't as obnoxious as Repulsa Prime.
I know nobody asked but if I could make some changes to MMPR>make the tone more similar to a teen drama, like 90210 with Superhero fights. The original Mighty Morphin pilot had shades of this>give the characters more depth, I don’t mean rewrite the characters, more like expanding on Whats already there. For example, having Zack be the heart of the team>Make Zordon and Rita’s backstories less vague, explain why theyre at war with each other>Make the megazord fights less mandatory. It’s an escalation, at first Rita is overconfident with her monsters killing the rangers, but as the losses start piling up, she gets more desperate. She ends up sending giant monsters as a result.>And most important of all, make fuckass Alpha 5 NOT a useless piece of junk!
>>23904135Didnt helped that there was not actual commitment in the line, the whole special felt liek they wanted to spoof melodrama found in pre CarRanger sentai, while also having ''SEE GUYS, ROCKY IS FAT AND EATS LIKE SHIT GUYS!''But now i will admit, hearing rita actually mention death in her lines definitively showed that it was too late to try to update, if they didnt do it in decades, not even during the disney era, now there's is no point in such.
>>23901231plus the creepy molesting jokes
>>23900565>Which kind of shows the kind of nihilistic attitude the staff had about the replaceable nature of the franchise in it's early decade and a halfThis was always Sentai's and Tokusatsu real problem, the disposable nature of their cast and protagonists and themes, i mean, was it really a real reason why they couldnt just at least let a sentai or any toku run for a second season at least? sure small step and i dont expect to kept continuity like PR did for 6 years, but it gives people time to grow up and enjoyr their characters
>>23910948There was an old interview with Tsukada where he said there was nothing stopping them from making a sequel season, but I guess they just have this practice of constantly rotating themes and even the rotating producer schedule that they'd just never do it.Just look at Tsuburaya recently that for years had fairly tight continuity between seasons while reviving the Ultraman franchise and yet the staff actually wanted to move away from that to push standalone shows in recent years (even though they're now doing worse than before). It's just how a lot of people working in toku see things.
>>23910948>but it gives people time to grow up and enjoyr their characters50 episodes is more than enough, plus they came back in specials and crossovers more often in recent years.
>>23910953>40 something actually>mostly meandering and focusing on worthless one shots npcs
>>23910948It the difference between superhero show of Japan and America. In Japan:Zyuranger: 5 ancient warriors fight against the evil witch Bandora in 20 century to stop her from destroying human civilization with her Satan's magic.A few year later:Gingaman: 5 chosen warriors fight against space pirate group Balban to stop them from destroying the Earth with their Kaiju. In America:Batman vs Joker: Can Batman stop the Joker from unleashing Joker's venom and killing many civilians?A few year later:Batman vs Godlike Joker: The Joker has stolen the power of a 5th dimensional being and uses this power to challenge Batman to a game for the fate of the world.-> Japanese companies think people will get bored seeing the same hero every year and stop buying that same hero toys. America companies think people will buy more merchandises and movie tickets to see their favorite hero all the time even if they have used him over and over for countless decades.
>>23911011Zyuranger isn't like the other Sentai shows, PRfag.
>>23911272Not that anon but I think Zyuranger shows viewers how a JRPG party acts in modern 20 century. There is an episode where they have to hide from normal citizens because Bandora sends fake Zyuranger to destroy the city and people forms mobs and police to hunt them down. The government says the Zyuranger are bad and wanted criminals but when they see Zyuranger destroy the fakes they cheer them on like they haven't hunted them like terrorists the past week. It's very nice to see how quickly normal people changes their opinions.
>>23908628Spelling Juranger as "Zyuranger" would be like spelling Japan as "Zyapan".

>>23911290What a strange thing to be pedantic about, considering they slap the name in plain English on stuff
>>23911378That's because the Japanese were still using Nihon-shiki over Hepburn spelling that time. They already fully switched to Hepburn a few years ago. Only oji-sans still use that outdated spelling.
>>23911443>The show is wrong on how it spells its own nameThis feels like the joke from that one South Park episode that was making fun of shit like The DaVinci Code.>"You know nothing about Christianity!">"...I'm the Pope..."

>>23908868>>And most important of all, make fuckass Alpha 5 NOT a useless piece of junk!Alpha's already not a useless piece of junk. How dare you.
>>23908866Is this bullshit still going? I saw that they'd redesigned Rita to look like "completely new character, except with Rita's wand" and just lost all interest. >>23856190Imagine being a power rangers fan in 2026.
>>23911274Wasn't there an episode where the main five Zyurangers got blamed for Dragon Caesar attacking the city? Sentai-Japan is dumb.
One little thing I appreciate about Sentai (older) is that you get nice city vibes from actual Japan in the 70s/80s/90s shot on film that subtly capture the vibe of the era
>>23908628>PR is about the daily lives of these highschool kids saving the dayIronically megaranger and some pre-zyuranger season had this as a premise.
