As things wore on, he kept going back and referencing events from the anime even if he'd already changed them for the books. It got to the point where he had an afterword apologizing for not sticking to his guns to keep it distinctly separate from the TV show. Even Japanese people who like his books (like the Byston Well series) wish they were better written.
