In western countries like America and Canada, Gundam Wing was more popular than Seed, unlike in Japan. I don't understand why.
>inb4 bishonen male characters
>>
Wing aired on US TV after school. 0079 was airing on daytime TV too, but they pulled it because of September 11th.
>>
>>23869769
It had five guys.

It's the first gundam to be shown to many westerners. It's really that simple.

It's okay if you're not 'Murikan enough to get it.

>Gundam Wing was more popular than Seed
You say this like it's some kind of shock. What shocking, is that either of these trash piles are popular.
>>
>>23869769
>I wonder if she cosplayed as Asuka at some point.
>>
>>23869769
It aired first and became the iconic show in their minds. It's like why they like Golion so much
>>
>>23869791
But no fatties allowed, Shuko Murase learned you have to have five ikemen to get the girls swooning.
>>
Because SEED looked gay and had a gay artstyle.

WING looked cool as fuck and had Milliardo and cool mechs
>>
It was many westerner's first show, the mech design and OST were both immaculate, and yes, ladies were horny for the guys.
>>
>>23869769
Gundam Wing is only popular because Wing Zero has wings and that makes it pretty. People never even watched the show they just know the blue Gundam has wings and it's pretty ergo beautiful. Americans are stupid.

Debate me.
>>
>>23870546
You're a third world monkey retard
And this is not up for debate
>>
>>23870548
Yeah America is 3rd world when it comes to class that is true. I'll admit that.
>>
>>23869769
Are you sure your premise is correct? How do you know? Are you just conjuring up demons in your head to torment yourself with?
And even if it were the case, how do you know both weren't fairly well-regarded ('popular') in general?
>>
>>23869769
Seed came out in the US after about 4 years of Bandai not being able to properly hit the same audience Wing did, and changes at Cartoon Network meaning it was no longer given a daily slot where kids would be familiar to it. Mismanagement in the toy side of things also lead to Gundam being out of the toy aisles by around 2006 and that was another avenue to get people into the property. Same with games which dried up(still ahd a few US localizations but not to the same push for a while)
Long term Seed isn't unpopular in America, it's still probably more popular than basically any series since. It just missed peak normie saturation.
And Wing is still really popular in Japan too. People act as if it's popularity is an American/Western only thing when it's Japan consuming a good deal of the merch made for it.
>>
>>23870546
Not only that that's why people think final fantasy 7 is such a great game. Sephiroth looks dark and beautiful to fujoshits with his one black wing so everybody thinks FF7 is a huge masterpiece.
>>
>>23870546
What a stupid take, Wing took off before Endless Waltz was released in NA.
>>
>>23870950
What do you expect? You're talking to someone who probably wasn't even born when Wing hit US airwaves.
>>
>>23869769
Wing is the White Man's Gundam. SEED is the SEAdog's Gundam.

Simple as.
>>
>>23869769
If I remember correctly Wing and later G came on Toonami after school 5 days a week. Seed was only on Saturday nights after Dragon Ball GT.

You need to understand what Gundam was to us OP.
This is at what we had
>Wing
This was our introduction. The shows lead is Heero, who was a stoic terminator kid. There's a scene where he resets his own broken leg. That kind of thing is cool to six to twelve year old American boys. The show itself focuses on flash and action. That also helps it.

Now let's look at what we got on TV when I was a kid before SEED. I can't tell you the exact OVA airing order from my head.
>0083
Short war story with an adult (for a kid, 19 is close enough) soldier lead with Kou.
>08th MS
Short Romeo and Julliet in a war setting story with an adult soldier lead in Shiro.
>0080
Another short war story but it is lead by Bernie and Al together in a big brother little brother dynamic.
>original MSG
This was our second full show to air. It had Amuro, who is our closest comparison to kira, and we didn't even get to finish his show.
>G
This is was our last Gundam series before SEED. It had Domon who was yet another adult lead, in a flashy action martial arts show. The Gundam fighters may as well have been super heroes considering what they could do.

Outside of just the toonami daytime airings, there was also CCA, but it aired during a late night run on adult swim. A lot of kids flat missed it. However that's another example of Gundam with an adult lead. We never got F91 on TV or zeta.

That was our frame of reference for Gundam for w Gundam was going into Gundam SEED.
When we get to SEED. Kira is a return to the teenager lead. He's openly emotional, way more so then amuro, and as a lead he he's not even in the same universe as stoic Heero. He didn't compare to the OVA soldier leads. From personal experience he felt wrong.
On top of this, the show has a heavy melodrama focus which American boys don't go for. Speaking from personal experience, I completely dropped the show while it was airing because I flat wasn't enjoying it. It failed enough CN death slotted it.
>>
>>23871031
Oh that's not good. The last thing we want is for anyone to be uncomfortable here!
In order to fix these hurt feelings, might I suggest that you fuck off back to /r/eddit or twitter or whatever other shithole you came here from?
>>
>>23871085
Thinking about it, I I should probably add I some of what else was going on around the same time SEED was crashing in the US. We were entering a period where anime was out of style. In second half of the 00s, anime was considered something for weird nerds in the US, period. The mainstream anime boom which Dragon ball, Gundam wing, and Toonami as a whole brought in had died already died. We entered an era where G4's xplay shitting on almost any anime style game they had to review.
>>
>>23869769

>>
>>23870546
>that one diy fad where someone bought a wing zero custom kit just to use the wings to decorate some headphones and discard the rest of the model
>>
Gundam wing oneshot kids who were used to sillier childrens cartoons. They were not ready for tech-noir battle robots set to eurobeat. It immediately connected to the young male power fantasy in a way that the superheroes of old never had. Every kid in their mind had a giant robot and a cosmic destiny waiting for them somewhere.

Seed kind of had it, but it didnt air in a good timeslot to have the same effect, and wing had a lot of its dialogue from within pilot seats- seed doesnt do it as much.

Easier to change the channel when youre 9-14 years old. Its a great "watch while you build" show though.

It's not that it's popular, it's that a lot of people are nostalgic for it. Nostalgia is always a limited trend.
>>
I'm a gundam casual, my favorite was whichever one turned gold and did punchies, the girl in it was pretty hot too.
>>
Why do people like Seed is what you should ask first.
>>
>>23872949
Exactly this it's not nearly as popular as 08th. Wing was just the first one and a lot of people pine for those days where life was easier.

Wing is not that popular it just has baka fujos talking about it. When they aired it it was a convoluted mess almost like they aired random episodes as if it was a cartoon-like Transformers on like serial experience.
>>
>>23869769
If this girl was capable of being normal in public so she didn't embarrass me then I would split her in half

Not that anon, but 08th MS Team did hit a weird cult popularity status here in the U.S., for awhile. It wasn't as big as Wing was when it aired, but you'll still find plenty of U.S. Gundam fans from that time period that basically worship the Gouf Custom. Every single one of the friends that built Gunpla around that time had specifically this kit because it wasn't an MSIA (certain MSIA were IMPOSSIBLE to find especially Gouf Custom) and this kit was on a lot of store shelves in that era.
>>
>>23873684
>weird cult popularity status
Ain't that the truth, especially when it was during that period of time when America fuck yeah military jingoism was at an all time high. Even now there are still people unironically saying the Gouf Custom fight is the best and most grittiest fight in Gundam ever, although it moves like a damn ninja and Norris monologues to himself like a stereotypical shonen rival. People who love 08th and describe it as mecha Vietnam War don't watch other Gundam or mecha anime and it shows.
>>

I still resent them sending Walmart/toys r us a million of the b list Gundam fighters no one wanted. Wasted shelf space and made sure no one got the good toys.
>>
>>23873684
>certain MSIA were IMPOSSIBLE to find
Why?
>>
>>23875022
Demand far outstripped supply.
>>
>>23875063
Bummer.
>>
>>23875063
Was that due to incompetence or indifference?
>>
>>23869778
I'm still sore about that.
>>
>>23869769
Gundam Wing was my first exposure to Gundam and the first anime I ever enjoyed, so I have the most nostalgia for it.
>>
Wing's funny because it's about a suicidal kid who keeps trying to blow himself up, but because he's probably made out of Gundanium or something, it's literally impossible. In a hypothetical conflict between all the shows, even though the mobile suits in Gundam Wing are bottom tier compared to what exists in the others, I have full confidence that Heero would still be one of the final survivors. His Gundam would have exploded like five times before the end, but Heero would be fully intact.
>>
>>23869769
Wing was first, and cartoon channels (and TV in general) was still much more relevant at the time. Cartoon Network in US and YTV in Canada were massive.
>>
>>23879096
>cartoon channels (and TV in general) was still much more relevant at the time
I miss those times.
>>
>>23879998
Don't we all?
>>
>>23879998
I honestly don't. I feel like I would have been alot more social back in the day if I had on demand tv I could watch at odd hours at my leisure rather than have to run home from school everyday to catch Toonami

>>23869769
Watching Wing these days, I'm on episode 21 and it's mediocre at best. There are some good ideas, but the execution can be really bad at times. It's full of ridiculous scenes with the characters acting like idiots, not to mention how insufferable their self-indulgent teenage empowerment is.
The narrative isn't even well-defined, the motivations are vague, and the plot seems to be pieced together randomly as they go along. I hope After War is better.
>>
>>23881350
Didn't it go through, like, four directors or something?

>Short war story with an adult (for a kid, 19 is close enough) soldier lead with Kou.
>>08th MS
>Short Romeo and Julliet in a war setting story with an adult soldier lead in Shiro.

This was always the most retarded take because 15 year old Amuro matures into one of the most disciplined soldiers in the Federation while Kou and Shiro start bad and only get worse as their shows go on (while also aping character beats from 0079).
>>
>>23882411
No one cares about Amuro.
>>
>>23882125
Apparently only two. Maybe the second half will be better, but I don't have too many expectations, I just want to get to Turn A at this point.
>>
>>23882411
>Amuro matures into one of the most disciplined soldiers in the Federation
If only we got to see that instead of having it yanked.
>>
>>23882710
Having what yanked?
>>
>>23883381
The show was "yanked" away, Anon. Cartoon network pulled 0079 from the afternoon times slot while it was airing due to 9/11 happening. American kids didn't get to see Amuro's full story.
From my own vague childhood memories, I know the show got to around jaburo because my last memories of MSG as a kid was Char's Z'gok being cool. Then the show just disappeared.
>>
>>23883434
The last episode I remember seeing while it was airing was either Lalah's Dilemma or Cosmic Glow.
>>
>>23870690
>Long term Seed isn't unpopular in America, it's still probably more popular than basically any series since.
I would argue that it isn't, and it's in the same boat UC had back in the day where Bandai tries to force its popularity given its reputation in Japan but no one seems to care. America would be infinitely more excited to see a new 00 anything since it's more thematically similar to Wing.
>>
>>23871074
If you can deal with the living conditions, Ireland and Scotland are right there.
>>
>>23886142
I didn't know red hair was endemic to Scotland.
>>
>>23886048
>America would be infinitely more excited to see a new 00 anything since it's more thematically similar to Wing.
no one even fucking remembers that 00 was dubbed and released in the US because the average normie isn't fucking analyzing for thematics when they look for the next anime to watch
>>
>>23886142
Maybe. But I'm a felon so she'd probably have to come here.
>>
>>23888118
What were you convicted of?
>>
>>23869769
>>23869778
Yeah. If you wanted to watch SEED you had to watch it on adult swim, and for 00, the SciFi channel in the same timeblock.

>>

I believe some places like Brazil also had Wing as its first Gundam solely due to Cartoon Network push.
