I've been looking into really getting into this series for a while now, I've seen Armageddon and liked it, but from what I've read, it seems like some kind of noncanon AU thing? there's a lot of other anime but they all seem to be attempts at a sequel to the manga, so should i just read the manga?

There is no such thing as canon in mecha anime.
