The key is world building and having memorable characters. Layzner was one of Sunrise’s many flops that tried to outdo Gundam and while Votoms is in the same category it’s hardly a flop.
>>
>>23892451
what world building?
Votoms is just another "dystopian future with barbarians who somehow can use technology"

Layzner isn't like Gundam at all. you are thinking of Dragonar
>>
>45 years
>zero Dougram sequels
>>
Layzner was just a casualty of one of it's sponsors going out of business mid show because it's product turned out to be a fire hazard. A victim of circumstance
>>
>>23892457
>dystopian future with barbarians who somehow can use technology
leave a thumbs down on the youtube video you watched before pretending to have seen the show, because it's not like this at all
>>23894748
was going to post this. at least it makes for a funny story

It really is a shame. Dougram was pretty successful, IIRC, it had to be to run a whole 75 episodes. But aside from the new manga from the Gundam Thunderbolt guy I don't think they went any further with it.
>>
>>23894748
It turns out the deadly oil heaters weren't responsible for this (it was too early) but the fact Sanyo failed to sell enough VCRs in their bid to enter the home theater market.
>>
>>23894552
Galvion had it pretty awful too, even some completed but unvoiced and unaired episodes that are likely long trashed.
>>
>>23892457
>Dystopian future with barbarians who somehow can use technology
Why are you describing Layzner?
>>
>>23894818
I think there could be a lot of fun making OC squads using that papercraft book
>>
>>23892418
Layzner's first half is amazing.
The the second half happens.
Ru Cain and some other stuff hard carry the second half, but it really misses the point of what made the first part one great.
Votoms is consistently better than Layzner, and i say it as someone that actually liked it.
>>
>>23894552
You did get a manga by Otagaki

>It turns out the deadly oil heaters weren't responsible for this (it was too early) but the fact Sanyo failed to sell enough VCRs in their bid to enter the home theater market.

Is there a source on Sanyo trying and failing to sell VCR's around Layzner's run?
>>
>>23895191

This thread from a former magazine editor trying to piece things together because it seemed like the Layzner kits were selling well enough.

You'd be surprised what Toei hangs onto. A an episode of Voltron (not Golion, Voltron they animated a season's worth of original episodes for it) that completely slipped through the cracks and wasn't voiced, but was scored and otherwise completed ended up being found and posted online a while back
>>
>>23895216
Depends if MIC held onto anything from Galvion, since the original studio went out of business and prevented them from completing it in OAV or movie form. That's pretty neat though.
Maybe someday someone will leak the other Lupin VIII episodes TMS completed but hadn't done the voice track for. Toei also had Sarutobi Ecchan episodes 27-29 they advertised in reel rental catalogs, but have never been unearthed.
>>
>>23895188
I've seen some Japanese people reminiscing about Layzner and even back then they saw the second half as an obvious attempt to cash in on Hokuto no Ken's popularity.

God help me this is unironically what got me into Battletech. I never paid much attention to it aside from offhandedly until someone told me the Shadowhawk was based on the Dougram and I figured the strategy game was as close as I could get to a Dougram game.
>>
Layzner was a snoozefest though
>>
>>23895484
Layzner had a strong story to tell.
Votoms is just 1 guy who keeps running from cops because he saw a perfect soldier boobs, gets caught, then his friends who keep saying they don't want to save him change minds then save him anyway, repeat
>>
>>23895386
t. sun-fearing cousinfucker Am*rican who has never left the flyover podunk shithole he calls home
>>
>>23895197

Thanks. All the more reason why Layzner needs a revival because I find it shameful Ryosuke Takahashi didn't get to tell the story he wanted to tell with Layzner due to how arrogant Bandai-Sunrise were about what they can do to earn more money.
>>
You can't directly compare the two because one was made for Takara and the other for Bandai.

>>23895807
>Layzner had a strong story to tell.

Racism against halfbreeds and AI is bad. Ripped straight from today's headlines.
>>
>>23896331
>Layzner
>half-blood alien/Earthling risks his to make peace between two planets
>gets misunderstood and treated like an enemy by both sides
>Earthlings lose, then it becomes a fight to regain freedom
>turns out both planets share ancestry

>Votoms
>dude saw a capsule with a naked woman
>becomes obsessed
>police wants to kill him for seeing her
>he escapes, gets caught, escape, gets caught, repeat
I didn't finish Votoms yet, but it's just aimless and repetitive

I recall MW2 (PC) having a way to unlock platforms you can't normally use when playing Trials of Grievance mode, among them a BattleMaster IIC (I trust you already know what that was originally). Apparently trying to use it crashes the game without a patch to unbreak it, but for some reason I seem to recall having played it without that problem way back in the day.

Dougram's ending was perfect for a spinoff, would've been cool to see how Deloyer's "independence" ended up. Though I wouldn't want to see Crinn, he had a good ending.

Seriously, we need the VOTOMS TV series, VOTOMS: Case Irvine, and VOTOMS Finder in the same Super Robot Wars game already.

We had the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Z Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, and Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack in one game (Super Robot Wars GC) and that game kept to One Year War.

Why not do the same by having Case Irvine and Finder take place in a hypothetical game primarily using the VOTOMS TV series?
>>
>>23911628
Votoms isn't anywhere near the money maker. I'm guessing Code Pizza Butt makes more so there's more representation.

I don't think it's a snoozefest, but I think the show is 99% padding. The actual story the show wants to tell would be better suited to a 3 episode OVA.

You can go an entire story arc in Votoms with basically nothing of consequence happening. The plot of the whole show would fit on an index card. It can make for a very frustrating viewing experience.
>>
>>23913626

>I don't think it's a snoozefest, but I think the show is 99% padding. The actual story the show wants to tell would be better suited to a 3 episode OVA.

I may like VOTOMS more so than Gundam, but I do believe it too squandered its 52 episodes. We could have used the Uoodo arc to explain what the Gilgamesh Confederation stood for and the Sunsa arc for the Balarant Union.
>>
>>23892418

You just described most of Layzner. Does it make you mad Takahashi was going to reuse the giant computer plot from Votoms?
>>
>>23913794
I don't think Ryosuke Takahashi has ever made a show that didn't shit the bed in one way or another. But, I haven't seen Flag, or some of his non-mecha shows. Maybe there's a flawless gem out there. I haven't found it.

There was some program that was meant to be a sequel or followup to VOTOMS that he and Shioyama worked on, but that Sunrise has never shared stuff on. Awfully curious how that would've been.
