Just a recent example of this not happening: I played NieR: Automata with both dubs, and 2B sounds completely different in Japanese and English like the English VA wasn't trying to match the Japanese performance, but give her own interpretation. You listen to the old Evangelion Japanese and English dubs, and to me it sounds like the English VAs were trying to match the inflection. Even if it sounds awkward in English and results in some comedy, because it's not quite how native English speakers talk, to me it's easier on the ears, because it seems closer to the Japanese intention.There is probably some middle ground between getting VAs that can turn out performances that sound the way westerners really talk, and VAs giving performances meant to match the Japanese VA performance, but this breathy spoiled white girl ASMR voice isn't it.
