Why are Urbanmechs such a meme anyway?
>>
>>23901738
He's a lil guy that looks like a trashcan, runs half the speed of most mechs in his weight class, and has a single big fucking gun.
They're cheap and if you're lucky, they can score some unexpected clutch hits and fuck up mechs much bigger and better armoured than they are. What's more memeworthy than a joke character that can sometimes instagib a heavy if he gets a good roll?
>>
>>23901738
Because on paper they suck. It's a light mech trying to be a medium and ending up slower than a Heavy. However, because Urbies are so cheap and durable they end up Golden BB'ing their way to victory by raw probability.

What happens when Shoji Kawamori is working on Armored Core and then takes a commission from Group SNE for the JP release of BattleTech.
Must have been an interesting headspace to redesign a lot of your own studio's work from multiple projects for a completely separate one. Not even to mention being handed a bunch of barely redrawn Kunio Okawara mecha to redo.
He did great, kept a few nods to the originals, but redesigned them to fit his then current 90's style. It was talked about a bit in an Ollie Barder interview but not in much depth.

Wonder what he thought of Duane Loose's mostly non-functional mechanical design when redesigning the few original BT 'mechs included in the JP BT starter.
Wonder if Loose and Kawamori ever met at a convention, two dudes who were payed to redesign each other's works across time and space.

I just started watching the cartoon. It's kind of amusing how many western /m/ projects take the "these mechas are ancient and the wars they're apart of have lasted for eons" approach. The pre-Harmony Gold Robotech Defenders comic used alot of the same plot points, but made a bigger deal of the alien glup shitto cast. I'm enjoying it for what it is but I cant help but feel alot of it's peers did a better job with similar premises, Exosquad especially so.
>>
>>23912110
You could do what some western crossovers have done and just blame the entire story on some sort of temporal timewarp fuckery (magic or otherwise). I just dont know who'd make for the best BT ambassador.

BT folks can only be an antagonist faction as they'd be vocal about how they're pretty certain that Newtypes, Coordinators, Cyborgs, Androids, Robots and any non-human sentient being belong under the bus rather than just in the back of it.
>>
>>23913926
You're confusing 40k with BT. Then again, the IS has shit tech compared to most japanese mecha series, so, not like the IS could do much about it anyway.
>>
>>23913926
Nahhhh, the IS would be with the protagonists, Clans with the antags (specifically siding with Zeon/Neo Zeon for the space overman ideology) and periphery would be either or.
Comstar for a twist villain who's with you the whole game but then turns into the WoB near the end.

BT's strictly Anti-Transhumanist at the political level. It's also anti-alien on all levels, considering that colonization and terraforming probably killed more alien life than they ever bothered to count.
Getting an arm and a leg prosthetic was something a character figured would end his marriage, even though women didn't even have the legal right to divorce their husbands under normal circumstances, and another had to explain to everybody that he wasn't doing anything untoward with his artificial arm when he was doing therapeutic gymnastics in a public place. The open discrimination people with prosthetics face is noted in background material, and likewise is the discrimination variant humans experience - specifically Heavy Gravity worlders who have received population-wide gene modding as part of a humanitarian effort in the past.

Consistently, cyborgs and modded humans appear in fiction either as something out there, along the edge of humanity and society or as straight up enemies, the existence of which easily manage to unite the setting's antagonist political factions into a single resistance block.

The cyborg faction was even more fun - they openly acknowledge that becoming a cyborg is an absolutely horrifying step that is completely beyond the pale, but it was a sacrifice somebody had to make for the greater good of baseline humanity.

Baseline humanity. They didn't become cyborgs so that there would be more cyborgs in the future, they did it so that normies could breed in peace.

So I'm sorry, the BT dudes would be, at minimum, weirdly racist towards Newtypes, Coordinators, Cyborgs, Psychics, Androids and Robots. They would at least openly point at the guy with the talking cat kamikaze bombs and ask him if he's counted as quite sane.

Nah. Once the Clans learn of Operation British, of their conduct of the OYW and of Zeon's Transhuman ideology, they'd classify every piece of Zeon heraldry as target for their battleship barrages. No quarter, no acceptance of surrender.
>>
>>23914142
The IS doesnt have enough warships to matter during the clan invasion era. I honestly think that they only way to put BT in SRW would to use the idea of the setting, and not the setting of itself. Like, have all the houses, clans, whatever, but morph it into something usable.
>>
>>23914142
I'm not as up to the Clan era of Battletech as I should be, but IIRC weren't the Smoke Jaguars very brutal and supremacist? They'd probably appreciate the ruthlessness of Zeon colony drops.

The Jags bombed a city on a planet, which was enough for the rest of the Clans to stand down when the IS specifically sent a task force all the way to the Clan home worlds to eradicate the Jags.

Zeon, meanwhile, killed half of humanity in their setting as their opening move, won the Battle of Loum by deploying undeclared forces and generally waged a total war. Never mind their repeated use of WMDs.

Das some Armaris type shit and so Chalcas that they'd treat blowing everything Zeon out of space as a Dark Caste eradication operation. No funny green man call for Zeon, no prisoners taken, not even among civilians.

Has anyone ever done simulations to see if Urbies actually suck on a C-Bill to C-Bill basis?

In universe Urbanmechs are the cheapest battlemech in the entire galaxy. (technically the base model of the Hornet is cheaper, but only by 30,000 C-Bills, which is chump change)

For the price of an Atlas you could buy 6 Urbanmechs.

SO imagine you give both teams a C-Bill limit. One side gets Urbanmechs, the other side can buy whatever they want within the C-Bill limit. The battle takes place in an urban setting.

How badly would the Urbies fare? Could 6 base model Urbanmechs take out an Atlas?

BT characters also tend to be realistic humans with the ability to read the room when they're not in positions of power that afford them the ability to dictate policy.
They'd be far more likely to notice the number of 'transhumans' and just quietly favour the normal humans while making excuses to avoid transhumans than they would make a scene by shouting out 'HE a CYBORG! CYBORGS BAD!' like a cartoon caricature of racism.

>BT characters also tend to be realistic humans with the ability to read the room when they're not in positions of power that afford them the ability to dictate policy.
Mind, some of them could be Clanners.

My point is that they all sport attitudes and opinions that will make them come across as weird and abrasive in SRW.

Like they won't think there's anything objectionable about the Aerogator invasion, other than the fact that it's clearly ridiculously weaksauce and low teste shit.

A human space empire that spent decades hiding itself in preparation for an invasion? What kind of concept is that?
They'll only change their tune once the Aerogator's use of clones, autonomous units, brainwashing and infecting people with sentient alien crystals comes up and they'll also talk shit about the use of Psychodriver systems, because it's politically incorrect anti-panhuman technology as far as they're concerned.
Additionally, they would mock the likes of the Aerogators and Zentran/Meltran as Chuuni tryhards - what kind of concept is an alien that looks like a person and breeds true with other humans without the slightest issue? With the gumption of an interstellar race, they hold the opinion that being human is peak and any people that loudly claim they aren't would be asking for a knuckle sandwich.

>Could 6 base model Urbanmechs take out an Atlas?
Base model trashcans VS base Atlas? hard to say. both are fitted out for close range combat.
Atlas' LRM-20 should be able to take out at least 1 trashcan before closing in IF it chooses to close in. in theory it could just keep sniping at the cans until it runs out of LRMs.

supposedly an Atlas can also punch them.
> The Atlas is also quipped with hand actuators which, combined with its sheer weight and power, makes it a potent hand-to-hand fighter. Accounts of Atlases actually picking up medium-weight 'Mechs and throwing them around like toys makes for suitable horror stories and further enhances the aura of the 'Mech.

according to lore, an Atlas can pick up 2 trashcans and throw them at the other trashcans.

>>
>>23922493
For the sims, 3 doesn't look like crap and has good controls, but 2 has the most convenient mech lab of all, if you mainly wanna dick around with custom configs.
4 put a lot of restrictions on customization, 5 was the first in the franchise to feature punching.

For the strategy games, the Mechcommander RTS series was very good, but its mission structure is strictly linear. The pros and cons of BattleTech people will gladly tell you about. It's popular enough.
Megamek apparently also has persistent online play servers, but you'll get pasted by vets and the Princess a whole lot before you'll git gud.

Since this is a Battletech thread, I gotta question
I was playing MW5 Merchs lately, and is the Black Knight really just that easy to overheat? I feel like I can stick 20 heat sinks on that thing and it's still filling up half the heat gauge in a full salvo...
>>
>>23925478
i dunno. MW4: Blackknight was the last good Blacknight to me.
play no heat and unlimited ammo?
also i thought that Nova Cat mech was a better laser boat?
>>
>>23925478
IS mechs can't really go full retard with energy weapons since most of the base heat starts with 1.

Even with clan double hit sinks combined with heat upgrades my Black Knight goes red if I don't properly manage my shots.

>>
>>23926203

Yep. Double heat sinks and Clan double heat sinks really help alot. I dropped the PPC and slapped a L Pulse to at least mitigate the heat problem especially if I'm the one using the Black Knight. Clan mechs are nice, but fuck their repair cost since even a scratch sometimes reaches 5 to 6 digits for repair. AI lancemates are a monster with it though. At least I never see them overheat and rape things.

This is my current loadout for my black knight without any mods. I have imported my save multiple times already.
