Why are Urbanmechs such a meme anyway?
>>
>>23901738
He's a lil guy that looks like a trashcan, runs half the speed of most mechs in his weight class, and has a single big fucking gun.
They're cheap and if you're lucky, they can score some unexpected clutch hits and fuck up mechs much bigger and better armoured than they are. What's more memeworthy than a joke character that can sometimes instagib a heavy if he gets a good roll?
>>
>>23901738
Because on paper they suck. It's a light mech trying to be a medium and ending up slower than a Heavy. However, because Urbies are so cheap and durable they end up Golden BB'ing their way to victory by raw probability.

What happens when Shoji Kawamori is working on Armored Core and then takes a commission from Group SNE for the JP release of BattleTech.
Must have been an interesting headspace to redesign a lot of your own studio's work from multiple projects for a completely separate one. Not even to mention being handed a bunch of barely redrawn Kunio Okawara mecha to redo.
He did great, kept a few nods to the originals, but redesigned them to fit his then current 90's style. It was talked about a bit in an Ollie Barder interview but not in much depth.

I just started watching the cartoon. It's kind of amusing how many western /m/ projects take the "these mechas are ancient and the wars they're apart of have lasted for eons" approach. The pre-Harmony Gold Robotech Defenders comic used alot of the same plot points, but made a bigger deal of the alien glup shitto cast. I'm enjoying it for what it is but I cant help but feel alot of it's peers did a better job with similar premises, Exosquad especially so.

BT folks can only be an antagonist faction as they'd be vocal about how they're pretty certain that Newtypes, Coordinators, Cyborgs, Androids, Robots and any non-human sentient being belong under the bus rather than just in the back of it.

BT's strictly Anti-Transhumanist at the political level. It's also anti-alien on all levels, considering that colonization and terraforming probably killed more alien life than they ever bothered to count.
Getting an arm and a leg prosthetic was something a character figured would end his marriage, even though women didn't even have the legal right to divorce their husbands under normal circumstances, and another had to explain to everybody that he wasn't doing anything untoward with his artificial arm when he was doing therapeutic gymnastics in a public place. The open discrimination people with prosthetics face is noted in background material, and likewise is the discrimination variant humans experience - specifically Heavy Gravity worlders who have received population-wide gene modding as part of a humanitarian effort in the past.

Consistently, cyborgs and modded humans appear in fiction either as something out there, along the edge of humanity and society or as straight up enemies, the existence of which easily manage to unite the setting's antagonist political factions into a single resistance block.

The cyborg faction was even more fun - they openly acknowledge that becoming a cyborg is an absolutely horrifying step that is completely beyond the pale, but it was a sacrifice somebody had to make for the greater good of baseline humanity.

Baseline humanity. They didn't become cyborgs so that there would be more cyborgs in the future, they did it so that normies could breed in peace.

So I'm sorry, the BT dudes would be, at minimum, weirdly racist towards Newtypes, Coordinators, Cyborgs, Psychics, Androids and Robots. They would at least openly point at the guy with the talking cat kamikaze bombs and ask him if he's counted as quite sane.

Nah. Once the Clans learn of Operation British, of their conduct of the OYW and of Zeon's Transhuman ideology, they'd classify every piece of Zeon heraldry as target for their battleship barrages. No quarter, no acceptance of surrender.
>>
>>23914142
The IS doesnt have enough warships to matter during the clan invasion era. I honestly think that they only way to put BT in SRW would to use the idea of the setting, and not the setting of itself. Like, have all the houses, clans, whatever, but morph it into something usable.

The Jags bombed a city on a planet, which was enough for the rest of the Clans to stand down when the IS specifically sent a task force all the way to the Clan home worlds to eradicate the Jags.

Zeon, meanwhile, killed half of humanity in their setting as their opening move, won the Battle of Loum by deploying undeclared forces and generally waged a total war. Never mind their repeated use of WMDs.

Das some Armaris type shit and so Chalcas that they'd treat blowing everything Zeon out of space as a Dark Caste eradication operation. No funny green man call for Zeon, no prisoners taken, not even among civilians.

Has anyone ever done simulations to see if Urbies actually suck on a C-Bill to C-Bill basis?

In universe Urbanmechs are the cheapest battlemech in the entire galaxy. (technically the base model of the Hornet is cheaper, but only by 30,000 C-Bills, which is chump change)

For the price of an Atlas you could buy 6 Urbanmechs.

SO imagine you give both teams a C-Bill limit. One side gets Urbanmechs, the other side can buy whatever they want within the C-Bill limit. The battle takes place in an urban setting.

How badly would the Urbies fare? Could 6 base model Urbanmechs take out an Atlas?

BT characters also tend to be realistic humans with the ability to read the room when they're not in positions of power that afford them the ability to dictate policy.
They'd be far more likely to notice the number of 'transhumans' and just quietly favour the normal humans while making excuses to avoid transhumans than they would make a scene by shouting out 'HE a CYBORG! CYBORGS BAD!' like a cartoon caricature of racism.

>BT characters also tend to be realistic humans with the ability to read the room when they're not in positions of power that afford them the ability to dictate policy.
Mind, some of them could be Clanners.

My point is that they all sport attitudes and opinions that will make them come across as weird and abrasive in SRW.

Like they won't think there's anything objectionable about the Aerogator invasion, other than the fact that it's clearly ridiculously weaksauce and low teste shit.

A human space empire that spent decades hiding itself in preparation for an invasion? What kind of concept is that?
They'll only change their tune once the Aerogator's use of clones, autonomous units, brainwashing and infecting people with sentient alien crystals comes up and they'll also talk shit about the use of Psychodriver systems, because it's politically incorrect anti-panhuman technology as far as they're concerned.
Additionally, they would mock the likes of the Aerogators and Zentran/Meltran as Chuuni tryhards - what kind of concept is an alien that looks like a person and breeds true with other humans without the slightest issue? With the gumption of an interstellar race, they hold the opinion that being human is peak and any people that loudly claim they aren't would be asking for a knuckle sandwich.

Base model trashcans VS base Atlas? hard to say. both are fitted out for close range combat.
Atlas' LRM-20 should be able to take out at least 1 trashcan before closing in IF it chooses to close in. in theory it could just keep sniping at the cans until it runs out of LRMs.

supposedly an Atlas can also punch them.
> The Atlas is also quipped with hand actuators which, combined with its sheer weight and power, makes it a potent hand-to-hand fighter. Accounts of Atlases actually picking up medium-weight 'Mechs and throwing them around like toys makes for suitable horror stories and further enhances the aura of the 'Mech.

according to lore, an Atlas can pick up 2 trashcans and throw them at the other trashcans.

For the sims, 3 doesn't look like crap and has good controls, but 2 has the most convenient mech lab of all, if you mainly wanna dick around with custom configs.
4 put a lot of restrictions on customization, 5 was the first in the franchise to feature punching.

For the strategy games, the Mechcommander RTS series was very good, but its mission structure is strictly linear. The pros and cons of BattleTech people will gladly tell you about. It's popular enough.
Megamek apparently also has persistent online play servers, but you'll get pasted by vets and the Princess a whole lot before you'll git gud.

Yep. Double heat sinks and Clan double heat sinks really help alot. I dropped the PPC and slapped a L Pulse to at least mitigate the heat problem especially if I'm the one using the Black Knight. >Zeon's Transhuman ideology
>as if the Clans of all people would think that's bad
Anon, they're the guys that brought the Elementals and Pilots into being, view people born from vats as superior, and created the EI Implants, they absolutely have no problem with transhumanism. Hell, they'd probably assume Cyber Newtypes are the result of a more stable version of EI Implants. That said, they'd probably still loathe Zeon for what they did to Earth, though they'd obviously sound like hypocrites, considering how the Clan Invasion turned out...
>>
>>23929851
>Hell, they'd probably assume Cyber Newtypes are the result of a more stable version of EI Implants.
They think that EI is for losers. They'd consider the Puru Program (closest thing to what they're doing) a mockery and a dead end as it's all identical clones.
If you showed them Psycommu systems, they'd point out that a Neurohelmet has the same functionalities and 99% of humanity can use them rather than less than thirty people in total. The wireless functionality is something EI implants have as well, but they're for losers anyway.
There really isn't anything about Zeon that they wouldn't think worthy of Damnatio memoriae.
>they absolutely have no problem with transhumanism.
What you have to understand is that the Clans' program aims at collectively improving humanity, with the idea of reducing the fallout and collateral damage of war (which they think inevitable) by making ever-better soldiers. So a Transhumanists ideology that killed a couple millions just to kill a couple billions would get top honours on their shit list.

Furthermore, their breeding program operates the way it does specifically so that they can politically distance themselves from Transhumanism.
>>
>>23929882
They quite literally consider themselves superior to the point that normal humans birthed the old fashioned are viewed as inferior, even if of the same caste, and some clans even treat their non-Trueborn as second class citizens or even slaves. They're the same people who consider "freebirth" a swear word, after all. Their obssession with genetic purity and superiority is what led them into creating a massive vatborn breeding program to begin with, it's just that their view of transhuman shit is biological rather than mechanical. They'd rather breed the perfect guy over an artificial womb while playing play-doh with his genes than turn him into dollar-store Adam Smasher.
>They think that EI is for losers.
Yet at the same time, there's nothing stopping an EI-equipped guy, or an Elemental, from reaching prestigious ranks like Star Colonel, saKhan or Khan, as Franklin Osis or Nicolai Malthus can attest.
>If you showed them Psycommu systems, they'd point out that a Neurohelmet has the same functionalities
They don't, though. Neurohelmets are basically an assist to keep the 'Mech's balance, meanwhile a Psycommu-equipped machine can almost be entirely piloted by Newtype psychic stuff, even without the cockpit, on top of the obvious use of Funnels. For instance, Kevin Langstrom walking around with the Black Marauder following right behind is part of a creepy and unverifiable ghost story, while Four Murasame outright calling out the Psycho Gundam to come to her is something that nobody in the Titans batted an eye.
>What you have to understand is that the Clans' program aims at collectively improving humanity, with the idea of reducing the fallout and collateral damage of war (which they think inevitable) by making ever-better soldiers.
But isn't the first part of your statement basically what transhumanist ideology is?
>>
>>23929885
Stopped there because I was reaching the post limit, sorry bout that. Anyways, transhumanism is, as the name implies, improving the human condition. Isn't genetic manipulation, the development and use of cybernetic implants, and an enormous cloning/breeding program meant to create better soldiers exactly that?
>>
>>23929885
>They'd rather breed the perfect guy over an artificial womb while playing play-doh with his genes than turn him into dollar-store Adam Smasher.
They don't breed the perfect guy. The enable the procreation of the warriors that have shown the best performance of their generation. Their proposition is that war is humanity's eternal, natural condition and technology can not overcome it. It can only be somewhat controlled and contained through a specific political arrangement, which is the Clans.
The point of the warrior program is to maintain the consensus that the one that beat you was better and if you're mad about it, you should git gud by the specific metrics society agrees on instead of escalating the conflict. You have been set up to succeed before you were born, so your failure is clearly specifically a personal one.
>or Nicolai Malthus
Malthus is remembered as the guy from the cartoon in-universe, even among the Homeworld Clans. As for the others, the Clans are largely meritocratic. Osis specifically styled on both mech warriors and aerospace pilots in single duels. After watching him shoot down hypersonic space fighter/bombers wearing nothing but a tin suit, they would've had to be US Americans to deny a nigger his due.
>Neurohelmets
Balancing assist is the baseline ability. The Neurohelmet also enables a pilot to control any number of weapon systems on their mech while piloting it. The Funnel thing of controlling multiple independent weapon systems that less than 30 pilots have access to in Gundam is standard on Battlemechs.
Remote control is possible through EI, which works on anybody with a brain rather than on less than 30 humans in total.
>>23929886
>Anyways, transhumanism is, as the name implies, improving the human condition.
Transhumanism is based on the idea that technology drives politics and that human nature is infinitely malleable. The Clans think that the human condition is eternal and politics are what keeps the lid on it.
>>

>on paper they suck.
The paper in question is both the record sheet and the map the Urbanmech is standing on.
Urbies are a meme because 99 times out of 100 they get killed without doing anything useful but initiative sink. But while they are armored with paper and hope and have the movement profile of the fattest assault mechs, the usually carry at least one actually dangerous weapon. This means once in a blue moon somebody forgets and walks in front of that gun and gets got.
Urbanmechs are absolutely trash, and non-silly people will spend the BV to improve the skills of a mech that isn't trash.

The worst part is that later my save got corrupted after I fucked up with some mods, and I lost it all.
I also had a Grasshopper and a Marauder, and was about to look for an Atlas and Highlander to cap off my roster

I had a 200+ hr unmodded save that corrupted when my computer crashed and restarted on me. I wasn't happy.

The Urbie is one of those remnants from when Battletech was made with computer gaming in mind. Every time it pops up in a Mechwarrior game it's just a walking turret meant to wear down the player's health and nothing more.

Marauder Cockpit is K.I.N.O.

Clanner cockpits have too much bullshit.
>>
I've bought some models and the quick start boxes but have no friends that want to play the fucking game, and the local games store is too gay and annoying for me to want to go try meeting randoms to learn how to play a game.

Anyone got any good tutorials on how the tabletop is actually played so I don't fuck up the rules? Is there like a tabletop simulator group that plays or something?
>>
>>23937925
What's the Marauder-Catapult cockpit look like? Or does this game not do Clan 'Mechs?
>>
>>23929562
any mech can do crits. spamming Hollanders makes more sense.
https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Hollander

personally i prefer PPCs.

>>
>>23938729
It does, but the issue is that you're dezgra Spheroids using jury-rigged honourable Clan OmniMechs. So as a result, you can see the rewiring and modifying, resulting in a cockpit that's not particularly sleek or clean.
>>
>>23935581
Damn what all 30mm parts is that made out of?

>>23937932
>Anyone got any good tutorials on how the tabletop is actually played so I don't fuck up the rules?
I mean there is the Mega Mek program that runs a completely automated 2D sim of the tabletop game.

He said game-breaking crits, and spamming more formidable mechs isn't nearly as amusing.

I was once a nogames. I went to my FLGS discord and from there found my way to a local Battletech group's discord, and now I'm a hasgames. Unless you want to spend your life dealing with the bullshit Princess does on MegaMek, and never get to show off and play with your mech collection, you're going to have to deal with other people. It's not that bad. I actually like the group I found.
>>
>>23939346
Yeah, and besides, they're for pussies anyways. You take a Highlander instead if you wanna add some hair on your chest, rather than some pussy ass plug-n-play lego 'Mech...

My local games store literally has fag flags up everywhere and I'm not willing to put up with hideous abominations and play along with their delusions / fetishes just to play a board game.

And yet again, YOU are the one pissing and shitting himself that he'll never actually play the game.

Also don't look up Maeve Wolf...

>ur so mad that a shit store is shit, that means you can't play the game and we, the faggots, won

No, it just means that I need to find a group that isn't a bunch of delusional fags that are guaranteed insufferable to play with. There are other game stores that don't tolerate fag shit and have a ton more business, but have no interest in battletech or are not worth a long drive.

You gatekeep nothing, you're just a puddle of vomit that normal people avoid from the smell.

I mean you are the one bitching that the same social niceties that allow these "disgusting incongruous abominations" to populate your local Battletech scene won't also extend to yourself...

Which then implies that no matter how disgusting these transgender folk are, you are some type of garbage person that is still considered even WORSE.
>>

>social niceties
Being forced to play along with a bunch of degenerate's AGP and public crossdressing fetishes is not a "minor social nicety" you faggot. They are always, every time, obnoxious degenerates. You will never be a real woman and I will not pretend your adam's apple having, 5 o'clock shadow having ass is whatever stripper-name like lilith you are demanding people call you (because it's a fetish) is legitimate. Not willingly jumping into a dumpster does not make ME the trash, you "pretending to be retarded" thing.

Every last AGP degenerate demanding everyone tolerate and engage with their disgusting fetish roleplay belongs on a rope.

You act like such a prissy little faggot while crying about faggots, it's hilarious. Look at the little princess crying and shitting and pissing because people he doesn't like are in the store open for the public. So much so, in fact, you need a little safe space to actually "enjoy" your hobby, of which you don't actually play and don't have enough interest to seek out people who do. Seriously, just man up and look for a fucking group if you really want to check out BT, Jesus Christ. Even actual homosexuals sucking cock and getting fucked in the ass sound less gay than you.
>>
>>23942842
>projection
You will never be a real woman. Even the actual battletech players hate you basically everywhere you go, the endless attention whoring drama you faggots bring is somehow worse than actual tourist women which is why the groups for this game died out at the other gamestores.
>>
>>23943004
>the groups for this game died out at the other gamestores.
Did you happen to attend those groups?
>>
>>23943125
I used my mystical superpower faggots like you are physically incapable of called "honest communication". Where I talked with the guys at the other stores, and they explained that their battletech group died out, and why. Because of insufferable faggots.
>>
>>23943004
Well, good for me because I am in fact not a woman.
You however are still a pathetic little fag who'd rather live with homos in your mind rent free 24/7 then actually do anything productive with your life.
>>
>>23943222
>they explained that their battletech group died out
And you are sure the "insufferable faggot" they were refering to was not, in fact, yourself?!
Because it kind of sounds like they're just telling you the group died out so YOU don't show up...

The urbanmech is the minion of battletech. It's the quirky little chungus that everyone picks for their least funny memes.
>>23915940
>>23918580
Everyone compares things to the atlas and I don't know why, the atlas kind of stinks. Urbanmechs get eaten alive in many different cost efficiency scenarios, including undercutting them with conventionals designed for the same job. Newbies just get high off their first "omg the urbanmech is more cost effective than a madcat?" without noticing that everything is more cost effective than a madcat.
>>
>>23948452
It's because the Atlas is consistently the biggest and heaviest thing in most core boxsets across the franchise, so its accessibility makes it an easy data point of comparison. Plus while it usually can't outdamage something like a Nightstar, it's usually extremely durable.
