That's the entire fucking cause of the issue, dummy. Because Balls are larger and have more mass, they're less agile and far easier to shoot down. The thing that makes bits and funnels dangerous is that they're extremely small and can boost and twist and turn on a dime, in no small part due to not having to limit their acceleration for fear of whiplashing the pilot to death. This not only makes them more difficult to destroy, but also allows them to quickly maneuver into enemies' blind spots and shoot them in the back.

I doubt the average pilot can even see bits/funnels before they kill them. Shit is small. Balls on the other hand are slow and large enough to shoot first.

Bits are beam weapons which are directly controlled by an autists' brain while also being significantly more maneuverable than a Ball. Balls are typically piloted by normal people while being significantly larger, heavier, and less maneuverable.
Balls manage to kill things now and again but it's typically not very glorious. They get some kills on Gattles in 0079 for example but the scenes are all very quick.
