Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

>Frame Arms Girl
>Megami Device
>30 Minute Sisters/Missions/Etc.
>Figure-Rise Standard
>Megalomaria
Additionally, any "Feminine" mechs like the Nobel Gundam or Valsione are fair game as well. What you do with your build in terms of theming is up to you so long as your base is "Feminine".

I miss the Build series. Seeing variants of old suits was fun even though I wasn't a fan for a lot of them.
>>
>>23903579
There weren't ultimately that many variants I personally liked but I think it was a ton of fun anyways. I hope we get something else like it again. I feel like they could just loosely adapt Gundam Breaker Mobile into an anime and it'd go over pretty well. The characters were reasonably well liked and it was a fun GBF-style kinda plot.
>>

i can understand that he wanted to be involved if it were to happen. the chink kit is a for profit thing after all, so its less like a fan scratch build and more like being cucked out of his own design while the chinks make some money off it

>>23903717
originally theyre mounted in the back where the stock „bulb“ sits. i could still do that and it wouldnt be entirely unreasonable since theyre homing missiles and the launchers can be swiveled. still feels kind of odd to have them behind such a big superstructure (which would block a direct frontal shot). so idk its either installing them there and leaving the bulbs as they are or keeping it as it is. i think making a mount for them inbetween the balls would look kind of messy, i prefer the current solution over that mostly.

idk if a couple people chimed in and agreed on the separate ball thing before it dries i may still undo it to the original.

Setter is nice to lock decals down before clearcoat. Setter is only required if you're trying to put a decal on a complex surface that it can't conform to otherwise.
If you don't use setter, just give the decal a day or two to completely dry before clearcoat and you'll be fine.

The Plan:
>thinner for thinning
>paint remover for cleaning airbrush/any fuckups
>surfacer rattlecan everything for first layer
>solid gunmetal grey for frame/hands/gun
>grey base on white parts, then white over it to try and bubble shade
>blue/yellow may attempt shading, or just do solid
>may brush/marker some silver/etc for small details or wear and tear here and there

>>
>>23903897
I honestly didn't think the thinner mattered. Good thing I posted here to double check.
>acrylics are a pain to use
In what way? I opted for them because I figured they'd be more forgiving than enamel. I know enamel paint lets you use the enamel panel liner, though. I'd likely still use the flow type pen liner over acrylic.
>>23903903
Sadly my local hobby store doesn't carry many Mr. Hobby products, but has basically the full suite of Tamiya products.
>>
You guys would hate my airbrush set up lmao it's literally just a tiny folding desk that I run an extension cord from my apartment into the central courtyard. I make sure everybody walking by gets to smell my paint fumes because I know nobody has the balls to do anything about it, ESPECIALLY anybody here reading this right now.
>>
>>23903894
If possible, you want to eventually get a primer you can apply through an airbrush. Rattlecans are much more wasteful, you can't control the volume of spray so there's the chance you might apply too heavy a coat without meaning to as well as all the amount that gets wasted into the air.

I'm assuming that you're already competent at nubwork, but I've found that a glass file can go a long way towards clearing nubs down to zero. At the least, it's less of a pain in the ass than using sandpaper in gradually increasing grits.

And what the other anon said is true. Enamel thinner for enamel paints, lacquer thinner for lacquer paints, and depending on the type you'll probably need something special for acrylics (I've never used them for airbrushing so I wouldn't know). Also, for cleaning your airbrush, just regular hardware store lacquer thinner works, same with isopropyl alcohol. And if you're using widely available enamels like Testors or Revell, you can mix it 1:1 with hardware store lacquer thinner and just shoot that straight out of your airbrush.
>>
>>23903905
Their acrylics just aren't the greatest quality-wise. If your local store does their lacquers I'd grab them instead, easier to use. See if you can grab some of the Tamiya or Mr. Hobby gray primers too.
>>

>>
>>23903905
Acrylics are the opposite of forgiving, they love to fight you in every part of the process. You dont surface prep right, they'll show through. Too much pressure and/or thinner and they splatter like crazy. Take a little too long or don't thin enough/dont use retarder or flow improver and you get excessive amounts of tip dry. They take ages to cure as well, and the end product is fragile and prone to flaking.

Lacquers are the forgiving one
>>
>>23903913
How would you know? Do you visit plebbit a lot? It sure sounds like you do!!
>>
>>23903906
I would walk right up and drink the delicious paints right out of your airbrush
>>
>>23903907
I didn't see any airbrush primers there. I'll probably end up buying some online once the rattelcan is out.
>I'm assuming that you're already competent at nubwork, but I've found that a glass file can go a long way towards clearing nubs down to zero
I already have a glass file set and can get my nubs down pretty well. I generally do two cuts, then a small amount of sanding, then finish with glass files. I can get flat surface nubs perfect, still a bit of trouble on curved surface nubs.
>>23903915
With what both of you have said I think I'll opt for enamel or lacquer. I'll hit up my hobby store this weekend for them. I'll keep the acrylics for brushing small details.

Every hobby paint is acrylic
>>
>>23904065
wait what? What are they then?
Will they negatively interact with tamiya panel liner? Cus someone told me acrylics + panel liner = bad time
>>
>>23904068
classic hobby acrylics like vallejo paints dont use solvent but water as i understand it. what tamiya or ak interactive sell as acrylics is a hybrid between acrylics and solvent based paints like lacquer. therefore you need to use lacquer thinner to thin them.

as for the panel liner thing, i think its wholly irrelevant what paints you use as long as the paint has fully dried before you apply it.
>>
>>23904068
you are mostly right but there are a few brands out there (specifically rattlecans) that use an entirely different solvent and pigment than what you're used to. they are also toxic as hell
>>

dont trust me about the panel liner thing though i wont be responsible for you runing your model. all i can say is i slap washes onto both lacquer and acrylic painted surfaces and though effects may vary a bit, it both works sufficiently well.

>>23904065
I mean they and Mr Color do use acrylic pigments for their paints. The real issue is that people market water-based acryllics as acryllic instead of water paint, to avoid being mixed up with watercolors.
>>
>>23904092
I'll take the risk. Does Tamiya sell water based thinner? Or is there any brand that anons recommend?
>>
>>23904100
then use a more recent but shittier one then, just so you can see a difference in experience from the past you, or better yet, a theme where you improve an old build, call it "2.0" or something
>>
>>23904001
I think so. Before panel lining my kit I painted with pour type markers over a bunch of parts from different runners, including some pretty fragile/thin ones and one that had arrived snapped and was only hanging by a thread and left it overnight. The day after I removed all the liner with ipa and the plastic hadn't changed a bit. It isn't even an expensive chink kit, just the bootleg hg grimoire from some no name company. You're probably fine as long as you panel line before assembly, remove any excess and let it dry well, unless there are different kinds of abs or mold release that react radically different to the markers, but that sounds unlikely.
>>
>>23903546
Working on a custom zaku. I was gonna take color suggestions but I was given the worst color pallet possible for what I'm building. The concept is kind of like a swat version of a police zaku.
Mind you, I will still do a light blue, pink and fluo green zaku at some point. Probably a high grade.

HG upscales are garbage look fucking terrible because they never do anything substantial to make it look in scale. RG ones are okay (except that 1/72 unicorn). and generally translate better.

No, you don't. With Tamiya acrylics use their lacquer thinner. Or better yet use the Mr. Color leveling thinner. The x-20a is not great, it dries way too fast. I only use it to clean with.
>>
>>23904065
It was a marketing thing in the 80s, you couldn't sell harmful chemicals (solvents) to kids and it made it really difficult to import. So they just changed the name on a technicality (technically the pigment is acrylic, even though they still use solvent to mix) for market appeal.

You can actually do a similar technique with water based acrylics. Put them over some dried lacquer and then rub them off with a q tip right as it dries and before it's had time to stick. It's exploiting the slow dry time and weaker adhesion.

I've only built the one. No real issues there as long as you don't mind filling in some prominent seams. You get some extra face plates, some speech bubbles and a stand for them, and a medal to serve as a base.
>>
>>23904408
Weapons that came with the 2.0 were sold as P-Bandai exclusives with 3.0. The G3 that's a 2.0 retail kit is a P-Bandai, Gundam Base exclusive with the 3.0

The 3.0 is a dead end line because they over-engineered the kit to the point it's a shaky and expensive mess that Bandai can't do anything with.

No, Hi Nu uses polycaps. The main issue is how it saggy it is, the pcs are not tightly secured and they get saggy pretty fast due to the heavy frame. The hollow LED gap inside its chest causes the head and backpack to fall off. The hands are pretty trash, too. It is just a mess.

>>

>>
>>23904653
Well my friend, abstractions may be difficult for you, but not everyone has the same taste in designs.

Some HGs are just dogshit as well. I don't want to spend more time fixing joints, range of motion, proportions than painting.
>>
>>23904656
>I don't want to spend more time fixing joints, range of motion, proportions
Well you should build every RG from RX78-2 1.0 to Unicorn, they all fit your description one way or another.
>>
>>23904665
They certainly don't. RX and Zaku aged poorly, but most of them are badass. The only people I know who fumbled the Unicorn are children (who it is understandable) and retardmaxxing adults who chewed the arm apart. Yeah early RGs were definitely not perfect but they were never as bad as newfags proclaimed. Unfortunately you can't stop them from running into the wood chipper of good kits only to fuck the reputation.

MKII is fantastic, ZGok is actually 10/10, Zeta looks great and handles fine, if you don't care about the transformation you can make it more solid very easily. I didn't build GP01 but my kid did without issue and loved it. Exia was honestly pretty good, the only part it struggled with was the shoulder attachment and that was a very easy fix. Astray was fine, I built some build fighter Strike or something and it was fine.

Its fine to be shit, but I mean either get better or be ok with not doing so and pick models you won't struggle with instead of doing pic related online.
>>
>>23904674
Tl;dr Get Gud, kek.
>>
>>23904674
You wrote a long assed text about things that are completely based on redditor's opinions and not in the context of what people here actually talking about. Shit like Unicorn's arms or Zeta's armor parts are all child's play, the real elephant in the room is how hard much of a chore it is to remove the horrendous design off these RGs and actually find a way to unfuck the sealed advanced ms joint. Want to fix the frame? Buy the Chinese fix, bitch. Get gud? Howabout get more money.
>>
>>23904620
But redditors love RGs. Every third post on their subreddit is about RG Sazabi/Nu/Hi-Nu/RX-78/God
>>
>>23904731
Because they are the target audiences. The premade frame was probably for them too but it backfired so bad, Bandai had to backtrack and reduce the usage of that trash.
>>

>>23904733
Honestly they are. I mean as someone who's been in the hobby a decade+ doing a snapfit here or there is nothing feel shame over, but the RG line and what they want out of the MG line is just that, all perfect snapfits but they must all be cave troll resistent.
>>
>>23904740
>if you struggle with either your tools and the plastic or your money in the plastic, either is a personal issue and not a plastic issue retard
The what issue? Retard i'm not a toy engineer, i'm not gonna learn engineering just to open up those sealed up AMS joints. A fully painted HG Zgok is a 10/10 kit while an unfucked RG Zgok is a 5/10.
>>

It's clear you lack the experience to understand what you're saying, so I'll leave you to drool on yourself. HG ZGok is a great kit, but RG Z'Gok has few if any flaws. Lmao, it is easy to tell that you are either trying to be a contrarian or just coping. Once you painted HG Zgok joints then it it as solid as a rock, meanwhile RG Zgok has most of its AMSJ permanently sealed minus the balljoints. Alot of 20+ years old kits are extremely nice once painted while the shiny new thing is just a stinky pile of dogshit no matter how much putty and joint reinforcement you give them. This phenomenon is extremely common.

I don't understand
I have never seen this level of corporate lapdog? slave? masochism? mentality.

Anyone with any knowledge of economic will tell you that KO, counterfeit, none licensed work will always exist in some from or another. Under supply vs demand, bandai in its inaction (willing to unwillingly) did create an opening in the market.
This Acguy (currently HG serpent and gelgoog III) is just an extension of past 3d printed/GK.

You can't really be ok with 3d/GK and go full sperg with these- it's logically inconsistent.

Otagaki has a right to ve angry for he is the right holder. But for the general public to act as if they were raped it just laughable.

Comparison between the HG Hazel Icarus rifle and the EW Kehaar II rifle.

They look different because Fujioka redesigned the rifle between Flag of Titans and ReBoot. The EW version has better parts separation and you can fold it without taking it apart. It also lacks the side handle of the Hazel rifle, but when you look at the Kehaar II lineart it doesn't have the handle either. It wasn't until ReBoot when the hammer came down and the rifle itself looks the same regardless of the extra parts attached to it.

Bandai did cheat a bit by shrinking the rifle itself to match the lineart though. Not a big fan of that.

Pretty much. As the idea goes, you give the paint a rough surface to "grip" on to, just use primer instead. I actually just finished my RG Hi-v
I seriously don’t see how it could possibly be topped as my favorite 1/144 scale kit. This thing is a magnificent brick shithouse of a kit, perfect in every way.

It's incredibly impressive, definitely one of the best they've made. But pretty much all the recent RGs are as nice as it really.

practicing spraying Tamiya x-10 gunmetal on a Tamiya x-1 black base.

One of the sprays came out decent but the others looked like this. I'm not sure if it's my pressure or my thinning ratio. I was messing with a mix a bit as I went along so maybe the later.

Also I was trying to get a much darker result. I'm painting an FSS kit. The one in this video.

https://youtu.be/lGHQJngeIy8?t=2147

I want to get that dark black metallic look for the frame.

>>

I have no idea. I just recommended aqueous because I've used it for a lot of things and it'll get you that look. It performs very similar to tamiya too.
>>
>>23905394
My local hobby shop mostly has Tamiya paints which is why I ask, I'll try to grab one of those if I can.
>>
>>23905332
here's what the aqueous metal black looks like.
i've used x-10 for some stuff before and i recall adding some black to it to darken it. the enamel x-10 looks more like the metal black oddly enough, much darker than the acrylic version.

I prefer Type F design but Moriki Messer is starting to grow on me, i just prefer Kazumi Fujita over Yasuhiro Moriki in general. Huge improvement on the waist, the joints feel tighter, the sculpt for the butt skirt is better and the vulcan holes look deeper, but i find the tubes and spikes to look too mushy compares to Type F. Still a banger though.

The actual issue that killed creativity in japan isn't rules or whatever, it's not allowing younger generations to have a life. You can't build creativity if all you do is study and work.

At minimum, you'll have to wait at least another 3 years before the next announcement, and then another year after that for the release itself. But more likely, another 5 years before it's announced at a show.
