Even back in Gundam when they introduced the Gelgoogs it really added to the tension that the cast really was coasting on skill and not hyper durability or portable shields. From ZZ to Wing to 00 and on only major figures have the firepower to take out the MC and thus dont have to deploy strategically

>>23904900IIRC GQX didn't have special armor for its pilotsthe bit staves in WFM could block beams but otherwise the gundams didn't have special armorby gundam seed freedom only one side character's machine had beamproof armor, the rest of them are all vulnerable to varying degreesnarrative gundam was underwhelming as fuck and gets trashed before the end of the movie fighting against the villainin thunderbolt the MC fights the rival to a virtual draw where both their machines get trashed. technically the gundam survives sorta intact but the rival's reinforcements arrive to capture the MC
