In this season, the sizzling summer heat gets to decline, cool wind blows and crops ripen. Korean ancestors cut grasses for next year’s farming, and particularly sowed seeds of bok choy, radish and other vegetables for winter pickles.
Meanwhile, they enjoyed folk dances such as shoulder dance and handclap dance, and children played a game of occupying the opponent’s position among others.The Korean people also prepared some foods that suit to the seasonal features, enriching their dietary life.
Among the traditional dishes of Korea is yakpap.Since olden times, yakpap cooked with glutinous rice, honey, chestnut, jujube, dried persimmon and others has been known as a tonic.
Yakpap is prepared as follows: Soak glutinous rice in water for about six hours and steam it after draining. Remove seeds from jujube and shred it into three or four pieces. Peel chestnut and gingko nut. Put the steamed rice in a bowl lest it should cool down, and mix it with gingko nut, chestnut, jujube, honey, sesame oil and onions sauce. Then put the mixture into a jar and seal it and then cook it in a double boiler. The dish gets reddish brown and shiny. Finally, scatter powdered pine-nut and cinnamon over it.
