I did not know Riichi Seike was the suit actor for Jupiter Bit in Cybercop. Ironically, it's actually even sadder than his death. If anything, people out there might be buying that PLAMATEA figure in his honor right now (unless it's sold out, because most Good Smile model kits keep getting sold out).

>>23913521
Metal Hero wasn't a term until around B-Fighter, it was originally a term made by fans.
She's not included probably because of different production staffs from Metal Hero? Or maybe because of different age rating? idk
>>
>>23913521
>>23913534
It was used way before that. The first time Toei used it officially was apparently around 1990 in some home video packaging.

Anyway, though, the big point was same production team in the same timeslot, yes. So, yeah, nothing else they made at the time was considered a Metal Hero, even if it was a Toei original armored/robot hero (see also Changerion, which isn't a Metal Hero).
>>
>>23913382
>>23913532
A good chunk of the Cybercop cast are dead. A few years ago a friend of mine found out who did the voice for the announcer in the suit-up and weapon deploy sequences. A Jazz singer by the name of Bob Timbello. Turned out he'd been dead for like 15 years now. Learned it via his son on Facebook who shares a name with him.
>>
>>23913558
Yeah but it's not like Toei doesn't slam other series that weren't originally part of the line up into them years later. Example, Suki Suki Maho Sensei and Guru Guru Medaman were placed under the Fushigi Comedy series. What's stopping Kikaider, Changeron, Kyodane and Lady Battle Cop from being Metal Heroes?
>>
>>23913584
>Kikaider, Kyodain
Ishinomori-made. Metal Heroes were an explicit attempt to have another hero franchise that Ishinomori had no presence in
>Changerion
While not directly Ishinomori made, it stemmed from the Kikaider reboot project and that might have influenced the staffing politics
>Lady Battle Cop
Basically no one from the Metal Heroes teams worked on it and it served none of the utility of Metal Heroes as a franchise
>>
>>23913809
And where Suki Suki Witch Teacher and Medaman being lumped into Fushigi Comedy any different?
>>
>>23913959
Where do you see either of those being lumped in Toei Fushigi Comedy? Toei recognizes it starting at 8-chan in 1981.

>>
>>23915969
The Toei section is fucking wild.
>>
>>23916503
That's a lot of Rider & Sentai. Sure they may be the basic Toku choices but you've still seen a ton of them. Nothin to sneeze at when those shows are ~50 episodes a pop.
>>
>>23915969
Shouldn't Ryukendo and Girls x Heroine in the Takara Tomy section?
>>
>>23915969
Let's see, I can't count movies but in terms of shows, off the top of my head I've seen Ultra Q, Ultraman, Ultraseven, Return of Ultraman, Ultraman Great, & just started Ultraman Max. I've seen Kamen Riders Kuuga, Agito, & Zero-One. Haven't seen any Sentai, Metal Heroes, or any other major franchises, but in terms of one-off shows I've seen Ambassador Magma, Giant Robo, Spectreman, Iron King, what's been subbed of Barom-1 & Rainbowman, two-thirds of Red Baron, & Mach Baron.
>>
There's this guy on YouTube who remastered not only the English dub of Spectreman, but ALL dubs of it! & his remaster is uncut compared to the other remaster which keeps all the cuts the dub originally came with. & now they're uploading the series raw..... with AI-generated subs, which sucks obviously, but it makes me think, correct me if I'm wrong but surely it wouldn't be THAT hard for someone who knows Japanese to fix those, or anything with bad subs for that matter, right? Definitely gotta be way easier than subbing it from scratch at least.
>>
>>23917494
Speaking of fixing MTL subs, did anyone ever try doing it with Jisariz? I remember someone mentioned it a while back but nothing ever came of it. I was curious if having better subs would make the show less incomprehensible.

Ohba and Kurosaki were JAC guys who beat the fuck out of themselves when they were younger. They burnt brighter and that means they burnt out faster. The fact Ohba in particular got so far despite the fact he was overworking his body well into his 50s is a testament to his overall constitution.

Fujioka did his own stunts too.

Fujioka was a solid stuntman but the shit he did paled in comparison, as he largely did grapples and pratfalls. Kenji Ohba, meanwhile, was doing shit even pre-leg break Fujioka needed two other stuntmen to accomplish. And later on he needed a separate trampoline guy (Osamu Kaneda). Ohba did all that shit himself, and also did crazier things like hurl himself off of cliffs into rocky waters.

There’s an 80's Korean toku movie called Thunderhawk from Outer Space (외계에서 온 우뢰매), starring the notorious Hyung Rae-Shim, which got like 8 sequels. I bring it up because I saw a bunch of English reviews for it on Letterboxd all from around the same time, meaning it had to have been subtitled somewhere, but I can’t for the life of me find where.

The Ureme films are incredible. They use a lot of regular cel animation for the robot fights as well as cutouts of toy photos played like animation cels for stuff like big ships and space fighters. Sadly one movie is just a clip show narrated by the teapot robot kid from Taekwon V and the final two were shot on video and have zero robot fights. They even downgraded the knockoff Tobikage robot to just a dog sized flying bird prop.

I really should’ve specified, I meant I wish I could watch them translated. Which as established, it seems a sub of the first one exists but apparently nobody who watched it wants to say where it is.
>>
>>23931115

I think the reviewer might have just known Korean and watched them. There's a couple of films from the same company that have been subbed like Taekwon V but the only live action one I've seen with subtitles was Friendship Power 5 (the one with the bootleg TMNT costumes).
>>
>>23931137
Nope, this Letterboxd review explicitly mentions subtitles. & most English reviews there are from around the same timeframe. When I very politely & non-confrontationally asked him where he watched it, he blocked me. Did I do something stupid?

>>
>>23932970
Is it any good?
It’s fantastic. Unique kyodai/sentai hybrid, lots of great single-take, multi-performer action sequences, main lead does well in a dual role, kid ranger is actually pretty great, OG Ultraman actor shows up as a villain later on.
>Are the subs any good?
ARR and Gorgom? Fuck no. I had a great time watching raw and just reading a JP episode summary after each episode to make sure I hadn’t missed anything important, so I doubt even ARR could make Megaloman a bad watch.
>>
>>23933712
are the subs crabsticks?
>>
>>23933714
At least the first few (1-15?) were definitely translated from Chinese fansubs by Gorgom who’s Malay and at least knows basic Chinese and English, so at least some form of actual translation had taken place (haven’t checked them out as I’d already watched the full series raw by that point)
Any episodes beyond that I don’t know who was responsible. Anything that ARR “subbed” will 100% be haphazard MTL and/or guess-subs. Careful/diligent machine translation (especially from official JP subs) can be a valid form of translation, but ARR’s output is almost exclusively irredeemable dogshit unless based on a fairly “accurate” BR-PT dub (which is unlikely to be the case in this instance)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure there were no live-action Japanese superhero shows between Messenger of Allah & National Kid in 1960, & Ambassador Magma & Ultraman in 1966. >Would it be controversial to say that superhero manga/anime like Astro Boy, 8-Man, & Cyborg 009 are like the missing link between those 2 eras of toku?
Wouldn’t be much of a surprise, they do compliment one another. As for your first question there were in fact a small amount of “hero” shows released around that time period such as 1960’s Kaiteijin 8823 made by daiei but these shows are highly obscure even in Japan. There was also a few feudal era themed heroic characters and were included as such on Toei’s 100 heroes from a video they released in anticipation of Spielban
