Level with me. Is evangelion worth watching? I got to the episode after the big dick swinging robot and dropped it ages ago. I remember not getting too invested in any of the characters, and the antics of the ginger on particular getting really boring. I really enjoyed Gunbuster for reference.

If you want to see actual flawless animation, watch Giant Robo, Gundam 0083, Gundam 0080, Votoms Shining Heresy, Armor Hunter Mellowlink, Mazinkaizer, Gunbuster and the Babel II OVA. All of the above except the Votoms adjacent stuff are readily available in English if you’re not a knuckle dragging retard who hasn’t even scratched the surface of mecha anime. Also I’d like to see what “old mecha” you watched, since a lot of early 80s anime like Dougram, Votoms and L Gaim are noticeably rougher (largely due to the character design) compared to digital or OVA work but not “amateurish”.

The EVAs are more similar to Mechagodzilla than traditional mechs since they are made from the remains of other kaiju. Asuka is a very grating character, I hated her the first time I watched it but I like her now, she grows on you over time.
