The characters are dull and tropey, specially the MC which came straight out of Jump magazine and has such ridiculous plot armor he invalidates any interest I could have in the well-animated action sequences because he took down a custom Zaku with a fucking Ball in the very first episode. Any reason to not drop this or just watch the Gouf fight and quit?

08th was never actually good an doesn't have any real fans. It's just that 4chan secondaries saw a webm of the Gouf and decided that the whole series is good by nature of having that sequence and in fact the entire franchise should be chasing that high for the rest of forever and that "real" Gundam is most comparable to Battletech or some shit.

I thought the beginning was solid, I liked the protagonist's optimism and the relative realism of the combat, but it’s a shame the second half devolves into one-dimensional villains and conflicts lacking depth or sufficient exploration. 6/10.

the American Gundam fandom is so fucking gay, it's all zoomers with a chip on their shoulder about Toonami counter-signaling about how they're not some filthy casual who started watching on ToonamiWing, 08th MS team, and 0083 get bizarre levels of vitriol because they aired on Toonami and Adult Swim and thus were seen by "casuals" or millenials or whatever.We've had 26 years of largely mediocre and ugly looking Gundam series since 2000, and yet a few series get ragged on far more than mediocre crap like Age or Seed because some millennials might've watched them as kids and it exposes the fact that the franchise they pride themselves on being "niche" (one of the biggest IPs in the world) was more mainstream at one point in the US.

AGE has a cool premise that they didn't execute on, even if they got closer during certain arcs. Also nobody watched it because the art style made people assume it was for 10 year olds. SEED is recognized as a Mexican soap opera demake of '79 that is only carried as far as it gets by the mechanical design, basically leaving it as something only for toy enthusiasts.

The Anaheim Journal setting book implies that 08th MS Team is an in-universe movie. That is my personal headcanon and it makes the flaws of the show more endearing to me. The contention that it is a realistic depiction of the OYW "grunt experience" is laughable. Even Code Fairy, a moeslop quasi-visual novel, has a better more generally lore-accurate depiction of what it was like to be more of a normal soldier during the war. All of the praise 08th MS Team gets are from people who are judging the surface level aesthetic. Another poster in this thread said that the camo netting and the general U.S. Army in Vietnam vibe is enough to convince people it's "grounded." Of the 90s U.C. ovas, 08th MS Team is the weakest by a mile. Stardust Memory and War in the Pocket are far superior.
