His original VA I think just couldn't do the role anymore as he'd switched to doing deeper voiced adult characters well before then. The original VA was also the original Cyborg 009, and Speed Racer, as well as Garma Zabi. He was also in all three J9 shows as one of the leads (all three shows had the same 4 lead VAs playing the same type of character) and that one he DID come back to SRW for in fact he was the only one of the 3 male leads who did as the others were Kaneto Shinozawa who infamously died before any of his mecha roles beyond Bundle from Goshogun got into SRW, and Kazuyuki Sogabe who'd retired from VAing by then (and also died in 2006)
