Story is garbage, gameplay is super robot.

The beginning is kind of mindless and the story takes too much time for something very cliche, but after you get through the equivalent to the original release (the first 11 or so stages) you can choose difficulty when doing a stage for the first time, not just replays, and start getting some actual good missions too. The story also improves. You also get more variation on robot body types.

However, once you get near the ending of the story things go back down again and then you get to the content of the third release which is rushed to hell. The gameplay is still fine though.

The end-game is mostly boss battles though - although at least there are some bosses that are about as big as your robot rather than just even bigger robots/ships.

That said, keep in mind this is one of those games where you need to grind for enemy drops to make/get parts/equipment.
