Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

-=GIRLPLA GROUPBUILD=-

Build a kit featuring any brand of Girlpla, including but not limited to:
>Frame Arms Girl
>Megami Device
>30 Minute Sisters/Missions/Etc.
>Figure-Rise Standard
>Megalomaria
Additionally, any "Feminine" mechs like the Nobel Gundam or Valsione are fair game as well. What you do with your build in terms of theming is up to you so long as your base is "Feminine".

Send a description along with both WIP and Finished images of your build to gunplaplamo@gmail.com

you're right that he's being disingenuous but you're dicksucking bandai the same way you're calling him out for dicksucking china. who cares if they stole the marketing? 3min project is literally better than 30 minute mission. better articulation, better looks, better value. that's a good thing, the more hype up-and-comers get the more bandai has to actually give a shit about its own product.

idk just make a product that stands on its own you don't have to twist yourself into a pretzel because I insulted a lack of originality on some random chang kit maker
>>
>>23954367
>copy branding
This is such a low hanging fruit because literally anyone can use "Minutes project". The word is just so common.
>>
>>23954371
It doesn't need to be bad or good, it's just the reality of the Chinese market

Nobody should be surprised or outraged for that matter
>>

>>23954371
i didn't say its a good thing, i said its irrelevant. stated itt once but 30mm is already aping hexa gear. that's how marketing works.
>>
>>23954374
yeah man it's just sooo common to have some kinda 3-based digit of time coincidentally also referring to the 3mm holes of it with Minutes directly after it
i can't go to the store without tripping over brands named this it's just crazy how many there are it's a total coincidence haha
>>
>>23954378
I commented on it being pathetic they stole the branding
Other people have ballooned it into a pathetic argument either refusing to admit that's what they did (lol) or you now saying UHH YOU JUST LOVE BANDAI WHO CARES!
well I care, it gives me second hand embarrassment to see what could be a good product doing this bullshit, it's just an actual fucking joke
literally temu 30mm
I just wish they had some kind of standards or maybe even pride
>>
>>23954325
Shit if it works, Bandai at fault for printing unicorn,rx78,astray,wing, and seed 90% of the time, those peasent kits wait years for reprints
>>
>>23954382
they do, it goes into the kits and that's the part that i care about. seems silly that (you) don't.
>>
>>23954378
Literally no one was asking for a mecha modelkit with gorillion amount of hardpoints until Kotobukiya introduced that shit. And then suddenly Bandai made a knockoft brand 2 years later. Even if the Chinks made some shit like 29 Minutes Mission, i won't feel bad for them.
>>
>>23954328
I’d buy the John orbit gray version, classic colors look like it’s sun bleached and ay lmao Gundam is meh
>>
>>23954384
>they do, they just then ran out of their creativity juices and stole branding because the product stands so well on its own it needs to be confusable for the existing more popular line from a competitor
it's just a joke bro, it's literally the biggest chink meme imaginable
if bandai made a line called Hexa-Gun aping every presentation of Hexagear tomorrow I'd say the same fucking thing about them
>>
>>23954388
if it was better and cheaper than hexa gear is like 3m project is better and cheaper than 30mm i'd buy it regardless, and again think it's silly that the marketing is what you're concerned with.
>>
I just don't get the 30MM line man they all look like ass
Yeah the chinkshit is a ripoff but at least they have decency to ripoff shit that looks good like Dougram
>>
>>23954391
marketing is something someone somewhere in the company had to do
this brand presentation came from nothing and got okay'd to be this
there are infinite possibilities and they settled on it
the way a company operates speaks to the company itself, if they have to do this I already have doubt about the quality because a good brand would actually distinguish itself rather than opt for the "I hope they confuse me for my competitor" approach of Great Thievery of Auto 5 (for grandmothers looking for games for their grandsons edition)
>>
>>23954393
You’re inventing scenarios to be upset about. It’s a sneaky marketing trick but the toys are good. If they become shit later because this trick belies some natural poison in their identity, I’ll simply stop purchasing. But they’re good now.
>>
>>23954392
The 30 minute fantasy line is good tho, more unique than generic robots that is 30 minute mission
>>
>>23954402
I didn't invent a single scenario anywhere in there, that's literally what they did with the branding. Like actually, if you wanna try to dispute that you're a fundamentally unserious person. Buy whatever model you want, I don't give a shit about (you). I'm making fun of a chink company for stealing branding and lacking originality. I couldn't give less of a fuck what you personally do, buy all the chink knockoffs you want man, your money and models and time. Maybe don't play defense for a company so hard though idk, that's weird to me.
>>
>>23954406
The scenario you invented is that their marketing scheme to draw the attention of the model kit demographic belies a poison in their chinky souls, and compromises the quality of their product. This is, as of now, untrue.

>>
>>23954421
Man, Sturm Gallus gets uglier everytime i see it.
>>
>>23954412
I don't think you're really good at this whole english thing since I didn't invent that scenario and I explicitly said "I have doubt about the quality" which isn't something I invented or an indisputable fact, just a statement of myself. What is the scenario is that they aped the branding, and they aped the branding to sew confusion and get sales from people who may think it a 30MM product, and that's just exactly what it is. I haven't built shit from them but I consider quality to be more than just if the pieces fit together in the first place, but I also don't exactly expect them to fall apart or anything. I've bought bootlegs and other chinkshit I'm sure it's "fine". Also not to get too moralfaggy about it but I mean we are here in all this to begin with, but I'm as interested in who my money goes to as much as I am what I'm getting with it and that's even moreso what's suspect with these practices.
I don't need to buy little plastic robots from anyone no matter how cool they look so if there's really any halfway decent reason for me to not want to I can just not, it's all luxury and hobby not an unironic addiction despite my ruinous financials due to plastic acquisition over my life. If they're doing something I think is scummy it's just that easy to not. If the design is cool I'll just make it myself.
>>
>>23954429
lmao okay anon
>>
is bro ok
>>
>>23954429

Zssa's action sequence was different in the novel. There were 2 Zssa units arrived to attack Unicorn. One of them dodged the missiles and had a close ranged battle with Unicorn Gundam. Obviously it was losing but still pretty cool that Zssa of all things got this close to the protagonist MS.

Just snapping an HG Jegan. Did some minor detail painting and I'm slowly getting better at hand brushing. Still bad though. Might give the yellow one more pass later now that the parts are together. Putting a dab of Gaia florescent blue on the inside of the visor was a good idea, just wish I could have seen those tiny gaps when doing so. Still, both look acceptable from a distance.
Really weird build order on the kit.

I wouldn't say it's terrible, but the proportions feel weird (especially those fucking thighs) and make it feel like a fat midget.
It also had absurdly stiff joints, but that might just be due to me not sanding enough.
All in all, it just felt a bit disappointing for the slightly higher than average price.

The care and attention Squeenix has shown their model kits reflects the care and attention they've shown Xenogears as an IP.

Honestly, I'm shocked these kits even exist to begin with. I guess I should be thankful, but painting Xenogears itself was one of the worst model building experiences I've ever had. I just can't bring myself to get the third set of kits they put out.

Alpha-kun, in the early 2000s when zoomers started to develop awareness of the world around them, there was this special thing called cable TV. The fuck are you on about lmao? Millennials were addicted to instagram and facebook when those site were in their prime while zoomers were watching random tv cartoons in the pre 2010 period. Fastforward to the mid 2010s era, zoomers started to consume and write creepypasta while millennials were writing fanfictions and smut on Archive of Our Own and Tumblr. >>23955548
I think they would all start glossy and inevitably end up matte. A gravity front mobile suit would probably end up matte just from all the dust and grime. Can you imagine an OYW suit in active service? I doubt they have the manpower do deal with powerwashing something so huge. Even amphibious suits would need to deal with sediment and whatever nasty shit's in the water. Oceans and rivers aren't exactly chlorinated swimming pools. Suits fighting in space would start out glossy, but would get eroded quickly once things start blowing up around them, just imagine a high speed mobile suit flying around with all the micro debris eroding its surface that shit would get fucked up something awful in no time. Even worse in a place like A Baoa Qu, just imagine a Gelgoog patrolling before the fight starts at combat speeds. Its fancy paintjob would probably get sandblasted by tiny space rocks in no time. Would the armor be in any danger? I doubt it, but the paint probably won't be pristine for long.
>>
>>23955582
It pedends on the artistic intepretation. Almost everything in MS Igloo has matte texture.
>>
>>23955584
I don't think the igloo crew ever got their hands on anything factory fresh. Their suits were already busted rejects, the oggos were never fabricated with quality in mind, and their gelgoog probably saw a lot of service before it joined them. The big rang had some fairly glossy bits and pieces though, but that thing was probably fresh off the production line.

You could also consider that 3d technology at that era wasn't there yet so it could be a tech issue.
>>
>>23955588
Pretty sure most of their Gelgoog were fresh from the factory, including several Zudah units that were never on battlefield before. It is safe to assume that how the MS and the related look like is up to the artists.
>>
>>23955594
They only built a limited number of Zudahs those probably saw a few test runs before the igloo crew got them. I'm pretty sure Kuspen's igloo got to fly around in space a few times.
>>
>>23955595
The test Zudah had grey paint, probably a coat of primer so i'm pretty sure EMS's paint was new. Also, you don't sand glossy paint into matte, upon friction they would be straight up chipped.
>>

Have you seen how they've been playing the Upscaled RG game? One kit with all dlc, one kit with LED, one kit with final shooting a few months down the line, one kit with perfect zeong legs a few few months down the line.
If you're smart, you'll control yourself and wait for the second run. Yes, there's an absolute risk that there wont be a second run and you'll never see it again on ali express, but there probably be a second run, and it'll have weapons. Or you can be like me and buy a double pack and wait for the reprint and cope that the second set is so you can have a squad of 4.

I got the upscaled RX-78 that comes with an LED. Its just a tiny thing that you slot in the head operated with a magnet and powered by what seems to be the kind of battery that you put in watches. I don't know how much juice a LED needs, but that probably means that permanently sealing the head is off the list. Is there like a super long lasting aftermarket watch battery that I could get? I doubt a chinese freebie would be of any decent quality.

For these threads? 5/10 is probably fair. No color bleed. Everything looks more or less level thanks to the topcoat. The color scheme reads as what it is trying to be. In the grand scheme of all Gunpla out there? It's probably more of a 3-3.5. It shows a lot of promise, and understanding of technique, but there's obvious room for improvement. Even red cliff is at worst a 2 esp. because it was most likely made by a kid.

Ah my hands hurt making this

I don't know why when the large model comps are moving away abs or using softer abs, the Chinese companies are still sticking hard to old abs. It is not the old hard abs is inherently bad, but damn it does hurt hands when most of the thicker pegs seem to be just slightly thicker than the peg holes. Had the same problem with 144 python though not as bad.

I had to do some sanding for the hip connections because they just won't go into the holes and one of the video unboxing, the crotch connection is already cracked from the pressure

Hello
I am completely new to this stuff of mecha and gunpla. Lately I was searching around for stuff related to knights in aliexpress and found these Liber Knights.
And my God, they so awesome. I don’t know, they have this design that really nails the medieval knight while also being mecha. It’s something I haven’t felt since BIONICLE I think. As if it can go either way and both ways work.
But aside that I know absolutely nothing of it. Not even where they are from, the lore etc.
Does anyone have opinions and reviews on Liber Knights? I’m gladly listening to everything not just lore but also structure durability design etc.

this particular one has a bootleg yulong fang brand version, if you find it very cheap on ali it's probably that, and apparently it's a hit or miss bootleg so i'd stick with the original bandai one that's probably somewhere up to 20 bucks

Liber Knight is the first model of the 30 minute fantasy line iirc, so probably doesn't have many bells and whistles but I hear the whole line is solid, they're also pretty large for the scale

Never built one but I did see them all and they look good without any additional work
>>
>>23956661
They're pretty solid and got a decent articulation, no glaring issues as far as I know. As for the lore there's a whole 30MF section on bandai hobby website with that stuff
>>
Just had the most horrible time trying to build the HG Zeta Gundam.

I own one, I got it because I like knights and I'm not disappointed. There's add-ons for 30 Minute stuff (the Liber Knight is 30 Minute Fantasy) such as a treasure chest and I think a campfire and stuff like that, as well as different adventurer pals as well as monsters coming up, it's still a relatively new line. The 30 Minute Missions Spinatio Knight (which I don't have yet) and the HGUC Gyan (which I love) are stuff you might like as well, at least with the knight motif.
The instruction manual will probably give you an extremely basic lore but I only know that they're from different kingdoms/etc and have different elements. One neat thing for 30 Minute kits is that they have all sorts of kits and ports (holes) for you to add different stuff or replace parts with. Also, if you want him looking like that with all those lines filled in, you might want to get some sort of marker or panel liner, and someone hopefully will give you the details on that (because I need to sleep) also get some sort of cutters as well). Personally I thought he looked fine out of the box and I wanted him as a knight rather than a robot. Only small gripe is that his pauldrons swing from the backpack, so you can't raise his arm up in a natural manner, although if you're taking photography you can probably play around with the angle. Welcome to the hobby and hope you have fun!
>>
>>23956994
They have 3 colors, green, desert and black. You have to buy them as standalone though. About 20 dollars each in my place but the price can get quite nasty in Burgerland.
>>
>>23957011
The price is affordable for the generic soldier. It is just that not many people willing to pay 25 - 30 bucks for a 1/24 human kit.
>>
>>23957011
Depends on what your metric for GW pricing actually is. Most governors are $25 ish, and I’ve seen the more complicated/accessorized ones pushing $40. They do generally beat GW by being as posable as a typical HG kit and coming with a similar amount of accessories.
>>
>>23957013
There is a 3-pack for the Night Stalkers variant, but they come without weapons and the accompanying weapon set is sold separately
>>
>>23957017
Governor has a full set of expressive hands and numerous other items to customize. They are actually pretty great.
>>
>>23956996
I see it for around 30 USD among others. Wait, especially next to the Fenrir, is this going to be a microscopic kit that looks horrible unpainted
I have a Number 57 Yui maid which is pleasant enough but absolutely tiny, I'm terrified of switching her hands because I have no room to grab anything except the soft-plastic fingers
>>23957013
I wanted just a green one as a generic but battle-hardened soldier, then maybe a stealth one that just straight up kills people if I fucked with the kit enough (why am I so indifferent to desert camo?) 30 CAD doesn't sound miserable, but it looks like it usually goes for something closer to 30-35 USD

and I don't know if it's worth the price compared to the sheer size or parts count

If you like a mix of mechs and knights, definitely go check out SNAA. Picrel is the Tristan, the most "typical knight" kit they've made. They have an entire line of knight-based mechs (Percival looks especially cool).
Also they tend to be very cheap compared to Bandai while being extremely close in quality.
You might need to search a bit through Aliexpress to find a decently cheap listing as they haven't reprinted any popular kits afaik, so it's only batch 1 stocks.

I'm not looking to paint the model, just have it look a little better. Also does a matte coat really hide sanding marks?
>>
>>23957080
>parts while they're still on the runners
No, you'll have nubs that are unpainted.
>>
>>23957080
I will probably get shit for this, but I dont think a gloss coat is necessary for waterslides/ panel lining. Yes, i paint. If your only doing the basics, just have your final step in the build process be hitting it with topcoat

I usually just panel line on runner then flat matte topcoat after assemble to seal in decal.

>>
>>23957086
I don't apply gloss before panel lining either. I mainly use gloss paints to avoid having to gloss coat a billion times

anyone here does sponge painting nowadays? what paints do you recommend?

>>
>>23957136
You use same paints, sponge is simply different distribution method. But I would recommend water-based acrylics simply because solvents might react with sponges themselves.
>>
>>23957029
Finally sent you mine, I hope it landed successfully.
>>
>>23957100
What exactly are you glossing it up for? I hear people do it to make the waterslides/ panel lining easier. I have used it once or twice to protect a piece from me finger fucking a painted part that il be handling still because im masking it up for other colors
>>
>>23957143
Makes panel liner flow better, easier to clean up excess too. I personally don't like surfaces too glossy for water decals, makes it harder to set it in the perfect position because it moves so easily. But too flat and then you get silvering
>>
>>23957119
Gotta seduce GBD with thigh pics
>>
>>23957084
It's just a clear coat, I'll be sanding off most of it anyway, i heard panel lining can make the plastic brittle if you don't top coat the model first.
>>
>>23957160
You should cut from runner, sand, gloss coat, panel line, then you can gloss again for the panel lines, then finish with matte if that's what you're going for.

Dunno if I should call it the Powered GM (Blain Cooper Custom) or the Heavy Weapons GM.
>>
>>23957080
If you are just doing it for panel lining, just do the majority of the panel lining while the parts are on the runners. It accomplishes the same anti-cracking that the gloss coat does as all of the parts aren't under stress. I've even panel lined some ABS parts on runners with Tamiya liner.

How many kits would say you would have to complete before you could consider yourself more than a novice or is it purely based on which grade you're most comfortable with?

quantity is irrelevant, you are more than a novice if you at the very least can decal, panel line and top coat. There are so many complete shitters out there who build hundreds of kits that look like they were made by someone with a learning disability

>>23957563
I have it, bought it as a huge aoz fan. Never thought it'd get a kit so I jumped at the chance. I can't recommend it enough, a little glue is needed for it (the hip split will make you want to kill yourself) and some parts needed filing to fit properly. I overdid the joint thinkening for the leg connection so if I touch it I'll fall apart. But I love it, I truly adore it and I recommend it
