How can you possibly get to giant robots from modern technology? In Planetes, El Tanika basically builds a giant robot that is a trashcan with arms. But arms are dead weight in a vacuum. In Moonlight Mile, they develop a powersuit for use on the moon even knowing how inefficient 2 arms and 2 legs are in any environment. In Gundam, everyone knows that Balls are the actual ideal combat unit: A tiny sphere that encapsulates a pilot, dozens of thrusters to move it around faster than any mobile suit, and the ability to spin to bring its gun to bear on any target in a 360-degree sphere. Yet they're treated as disposable suicide weapons when in fact everyone who wasn't a fan of Gundam before 2008 said they were what we'd be building to fight in space if we didn't got full automated drone swarm. So why all this work to justify AMBAC or put a humanoid robot into any post-2026 science fiction setting in general? We all know they can never be built and would never work. The Tachikomas aren't a real design that could survive the strain of driving or jumping. The Labors are anachronisms that can't perform better than bulldozers, cranes, or forklifts. What's the point of wasting so much words and art on something that isn't the correct engineering solution?
>>23956032 development of darpa gxv-t and similar concepts
Because it looks cool.
>>23956032We let the chinese solve the future. They're clearly capable of it unlike the 11s
>>23956032>>23956039spbp
>>23956032You sound like a joyless cunt
>>23956039>>23956101>>23956109>>23956178None of that explains anything. The Chinese must be fools to spend the time and money on this. Otherwise, the Americans would also be making humanoid robots.
>>23956295Americans are too busy getting funneled by billionaires to worry about robots.
>>23956295We're not trying to explain, we're calling you a retard
Lightweight land combat vehicles with wheels mounted on legs gradually become erect and bipedal… For reasons.
>>23956383>gradually become erectCurious, so do I.
>>23956383That diagram was made by a tranny.
>>23956032>In Gundam, everyone knows that Balls are the actual ideal combat unitno. in microgravity and in enclosed spaces and when trying to reorient in zero gravity limbs allow for movement without expending fuel, plus the arms can manipulate anything they encounter including standardized weapons the head is just a sensor suit mixed with CIWS which makes sense to be mounted where it can rotate freely
>>23956434limbs also allow to reposition the thrusters for better rotational leverage. and kick and punch, and rescue the infantry >>23956032>How can you possibly get to giant robots from modern technology?fucking easily. it's all about shareholders
>>23956394Prove it.
>>23956434>limbs allow for movement without expending fuelreaction wheels are better at it
>>23956640no they arent, please explain to me why a larger reaction wheel is superior to a smaller one of the same mass
>>23956032drone warfare is /m/ and I'm tired of pretending it isn't
>>23956295>Otherwise, the Americans would also be making humanoid robots. The Americans are working on it. They've been doing it since the 1990s. But their focus is on Iron Man armor. Not giant robots. The main problem is the power source. The suit can't run for more than 15 minutes or so because battery technology is too limited and they don't want to make suit too bulky. They tried giant robots but the same problem came up. The only way to solve was using a nuclear reactor but no one wants to put that in a war machine that WILL take hits and get damaged.
>>23956786Drone warfare is the equivalent of buying cheap plastic chairs from Walmart for your patio. Boring, cheap, and lacks romance.
>>23956640>>23956644A bigger reaction wheel is just able to rotate a bigger object at the same speed or a smaller one faster. So the ideal space war machine isn't something with a dinky arm or leg but a sphere 300 feet in diameter with reaction wheels sized to match.
>>23956889>A bigger reaction wheel is just able to rotate a bigger object at the same speed or a smaller one fasterwrong it doesnt scale linearly the further away we can get that mass the better. we cant have a massive wheel tho so a mass on the end of an articulating limb is going to be the best option here>So the ideal space war machine isn't something with a dinky arm or leg but a sphere 300 feet in diameter with reaction wheels sized to match.both die instantly when some super fast projectile hit them so wrong again theres no reason to invest in anything other than the dinky robot
>>23956799But unless a series is a dieselpunk or steampunk setting, mecha are always in some nebulous sci-fi future where the power problem has been solved by cheap and easy fusion or compressed fuel or something else. If we assume that fusion power is 50 years away, materials science will make more efficient power transmission materials, and the same science that goes into making a usable fusion generator can be applied to a machine's joints or hydraulics, doesn't that still mean giant robots are stupid because you can just apply that science to a flatbed truck or a new type of train engine or a forklift?
>>23956889you don't have to make it bigger, you can just spin it faster
>>23956295You're not worth explaining anything to. You're basically whining that people are enjoying fictional things on the grounds that they won't be real.
>>23956889please tell me exactly how we are going to change the direction this 300 foot wheel is spinning in or else its fucking useless
>>23956898You don't. You have two 150 foot wheels spinning in the other direction if you want to turn the other way.
>>23956899so I can look left and right using two massive wheels rather than being able to orient myself any way I want in 3d with arms and legs which also serve other purposes?
>>23956898>>23956889Member the legs are just for show.
>>23956902Have you ever tried to orient yourself in zero gravity with just your arms and legs?
>>23956902Exactly. Because the reaction wheels can spin infinitely and react whenever they need to while arms and legs are limited to their range of motion and need to keep flapping to keep you turning if your turn is going to be greater than about 30 degrees. Don't think about what happens when a wheel gets jarred by a near-miss or the ball gets struck by an armor-piercing warhead.
>>23956918no but ive watched astronauts do it plenty of times as a party trick
>>23956899I don't think it works that way.https://share.gemini.google/iQKpg4EXG56w
>>23956925Yeah but an AI doesn't know military logistics or how procurement works. If the space pod is cheaper, it will always win out over a giant robot.
>>23956801>
>>23956032>What's the point of wasting so much words and art on something that isn't the correct engineering solution? It must be hard being too autistic for such an autistic genre.
>>23957598But mecha aren't autistic. Mecha are fantastic. Real autists know that >Mecha are unrealistic>You can do literally anything without a mecha>Mecha would be too fragile to do anything because steel and lead won't hold up a 60 ton robotor>Space warfare is impossible>Stealth is impossible in space and everything in space can be seen by telescopes and radar and infrared>Anything with a gun in space can be shot down by anyone else

>>23957020Yeah, historically the winner of wars is always the one who spends the least money. The less money you spend, the more logistic points you get until you win by default.
>>23957706So you understand that they're fantastical and exist for cool factor but still want to approach the question as a real world problem?Do you have trouble separating fantasy from reality or what?>The entire greentextNot sure if you're really autistic or just retarded, none of that makes sense, and neither can you prove what is essentially speculation
>>23957740But if you spend cheap amounts on the wrong thing in vast quantities, you still lose. Look at French aviation before WW2 or Japanese tanks.
>>23957749I'm not sure if going for the opposite extreme would have prevented them from being beaten anyway
>>23956786>Jegan vs bug
>>23956032*RAUGHS*
>>23957706Anon, honest question, do you know what fiction is and why people tell stories that aren't just a recounting of real events?
>>23958094>>23957748So you think mecha can't be real? That there is no world where they have a role or place? Because it sounds like you're just agreeing with the greentext arguments everyone uses to say why mecha can't exist.
>>23958356Yes? To spell it out for you, those greentexts are right in the strictly technical sense and nobody who likes mecha cares because they are, as you yourself suggest, autistic enough to know their cool fiction is not necessarily realistic or viable, but they still think it's cool. This has been discussed a bajillion times before. You seem to be doing some serious mental gymnastics to suggest to yourself that mecha enjoyers think mecha are actually viable IRL or something.
>>23956801Welcome to war? War has always been about the dirtiest, cheapest way to kill the other team before they do the same to you.
>>23958356Mate, no one sane watches giant robot stuff because they think giant bipedal combat platforms will ever be real, much less plainly fantastical stuff like Getter or Gurren Lagann.
>>23958471>>23958508But how can you enjoy something that can't realistically happen? Isn't this a speculative genre by definition? If it isn't possible, then what is the meaning of it? To find that out is the goal of this thread.
>>23958508There's no reason India can't fight Pakistan using a big guy with devil wings and an axe.
>>23958512This is why somebody else was calling you an autist earlier. Autists who enjoy fiction of all stripes, of which there are many, know well what does or doesn't work but also use that autism to enhance their sense of enjoyment for the fantastic, or even to add spice to their utterly improbable and impossible fantasies. You on the other hand seem to be trying to use autism as a cudgel against the impossible, which to all autists capable of enjoying the fictitious is a complete waste of time because they already know it's impossible and consume, create, and enjoy more anyway.
>>23958512Anon, we return to >>23958356 in this case.
>>23958679Or the post immediately above it, >>23958094 and then we all pretend I linked the right one the first time.
>>23958471>>23958508No justification about why mecha are not viable IRL can be sustained. It's an ideological point, not a scientific or engineering one.
>>23958953It doesn't fucking matter either way. Gundam is not real and that is okay.
