>We can stretch out a MOTW episode plot into a 3-4 episode arc: THE SHOW
Otherwise this was a fun watch, though I didn't like it as much as G Gundam.
What other Mazinger stuff should I watch?
>>
>>>/wsr/
>>
Your wife's son.
>>
>>23958470
Start with the original Mazinger Z.
In many ways it's the perfect opposite of Shin Mazinger, but in all the good ways
>>
>>23958470
WATCH MAZINKAISER
>>
>>23958470
>>23958488
WATCH MAZINKAISER SK FUCKING L
>>
>>23958481 is, of course, correct.
Mazinkaiser's fun and SKL is good if you approach it as a music video with aspirations beyond its station.
I liked Infinity more than I expected. It kind of should be terrible, especially with its 3dpd, but damn if it doesn't feel like it understands that robots fighting robots is cool as hell. Also it properly respects Doublas M2.
>>
>>23958481
>>23958491
Toeizinger's the last Mazinger thing I watched (haven't started God Mazinger) and it's probably my favorite, and I love all of these shows greatly. Although I would love to see a continuation for Shin than I would for Toei. Although, I am curious what sort of show we would have gotten had we never gotten Grendizer, and it was just solely Z and Great, getting the older/younger brother dynamic except between actual brothers. And actually getting some explicit fucking closure for Great's show in any piece of media outside afaik SRW 30
>>
>>23959163
OP here.
God Mazinger is, funnily enough, the only other Mazinger thing I’ve watched (I’m about 3/4 through the story).
All my other Mazinger exposure has been cultural osmosis or SRW.
>>
>>23958470
Would this series have done better if they didn't have the Kurogane crew sucking half the screen time away from Koji and his friends?
>>
>>23959251
Yeah, they really needed to give more character focus to Kouji, Sayaka and Boss. The kurogane 5 could have been there, but should have remained more as background figures (and they pretty much were by the end, making the early focus a waste of time).

Really, overall, I think they also could have skipped the ancient backstory time travel arc in the middle and summarize it into some quick exposition, and then actually give a conclusion to the story at the end with whatever Imagawa had planned for Great Mazinger and "Blade".
>>
>>23958491
SKL is retarded fun. How can anyone criticize it as there is no way it can be taken seriously.
>>
>>23959251
>>23959266
Kouji really felt like a side character in his own show. Like, all the actual drama was between the various scientists involved in Bardo’s Island and Ashura, and he was just there to do the fighting.
>>
I'm going to be reading the original 70s manga and then I will watch the original 70s anime
>>
>>23959326
For the original manga, keep in mind the actual ending in the most common online compilation is actually at the start of the Great Mazinger volume. You can skip from the end of Volume 3 straight to Great Mazinger. Volumes 4 and 5 have chapters that were published separately in another magazine (the first chapter of this part is very obvious since it reintroduces all characters and the basic conflict) and are very episodic, while also introducing a bunch of the anime robots out of nowhere.

There's also the Gosaku Ota Mazinger Z manga which has been fan translated by now too, and it's based on the Toei, but mostly covering the "big" events. It also continues into Great Mazinger and Grendizer but these split into their own things and are very different from the anime (Great Mazinger's Ota manga... is great though).
>>
>>23958470
Shin Mazinger fucking sucked. Worst show by far.
If you want good Mazinger watch Kaiser and SKL.
>>
>>23959377
Oh god don't do that shit again. TV Magazine was a continuation of Nagai's SJ serialization after Nagai had a falling out with SJ.

>>23959326
You don't need to do any mental gymnastics like >>23959377 is pushing. Just read Mazinger Z and then read its sequel Great Mazinger for the finale.

>>23959425
Thanks based majin anons
>>
>>23959425
>Oh god don't do that shit again.

I will always bring that up. The number of people I've seen hating on the Mazinger Z manga due to those freaking Tv magazine chapters being stupidly thrown in there is depressing.
>>
>>23958470
Mazinger Z
Great Mazinger
Grendizer
Mazinkaiser
god Mazinger

Skip Kaiser SKL, it's tasteless shit for edgy teens and isn't full adaptation of the manga (which is also shit)
>>
>>23959571
Bullshit, fuck off. Stop spreading misinfo.
>>
>>23959380
Those redesigns are genuinely painful to look at. I dont get why they feel the need to fuck with the formula. Just give me more classic fucking Mazinger Z.
>>
Honest question, why does Mazinger Z struggle to retain relevancy nowadays? He's my favorite Nagai-bot and it seems like he's lowest on the totem pole now. Are the others just that much more popular? Did Nagai fail to keep Z and Koji alive in the wider zeitgeist? What is it? Even Ultraman and Kamen Rider seem ro perform better than Z.
>>
>>23959647
Mecha is an oldschool fad in today's world. Modern kids don't really care about mecha.
>>
>>23959647

Mazinger was fucked in the late 70s and 80s due to disputes between Nagai and Toei, which resulted in nothing getting made and it falling on the wayside (See for example the "Dai-Mazinger" project in the 80s being blocked by Toei). Its popularity was revived in the 90s thanks to Super Robot Wars and with Mazinger's SRW debut being a big success we eventually got the Mazinkaiser OVAs which were also a success, although only with your usual mecha fans.

The problem is that Dynamic planning started struggling with some other anime afterwards like Jeeg and New Getter. However, Shin Mazinger had a huge marketing push, and seemed poised to make a big splash, but it failed to make any impact. The marketing was heavily based on nostalgia, but the first few episodes turned off a lot of people who tried the show based on that and then it faded out into obscurity outside of SRW. I've seen people on Japanese twitter that only know about Shin Mazinger through SRW and had no idea the show ended without resolving the Mycenae battle originally.

Mazinger Infinity came and went. It didn't do badly, and you can see the toyline related to this series continued for years with many new "Infinity" style designs, but it wasn't the big mainstream hit Toei was looking for so they didn't bother with Mazinger anymore afterwards.

Then we had Grendizer U recently which was just a complete misfire.

For what's worth, Nagai is launching a new Violence Jack manga spin-off featuring Mazinger among other Dynamic Planning series later this year (Chikyu Taisen 2053) and the issue of the magazine with the prologue chapter that was already released seemed to do really well and sell out.
>>
>>23959661
>Mazinger's SRW debut
Fuck, I meant Mazinkaiser.
>>
>>23959647
Mazinger Z isn't really a franchise comparable in concept to something like Ultraman and Kamen Rider or even Gundam. For a 1970s robot series Mazinger Z has had surprising longevity.
>>
>>23959647
>Honest question, why does Mazinger Z struggle to retain relevancy nowadays
Why would it not? It barely gets any new content, and what new content it does get is Grendizer U
Outside of what was released in the 1970s, the entirety of the Mazinger catalog consists of two TV shows, two OVAs and two movies. As far as animated works go, that's literally it. And non-animated works almost never create relevancy outside of super rare exceptions like Berserk
>>
>>23959647
Mazinger is a MoTW franchise at it’s heart, it doesn’t have any big themes like Gundam or Getter to keep people who are in it for deep stories around.
>>
>>23959658
Right, I knew that much but I get the sense there's some part of the history I'm missing. >>23959661
Anon's post sort of highlights what I suspected would have been the root cause of Mazinger's decline. Some franchises just cant endure as long as others but damn it all I just like Z the best. I just wish he'd retained more favor over the past few decades.
>>23959695
>>23959754
Do you anons believe it was a matter of changing tastes that did him in? It just seems like many of Nagai's other creations were able to keep up with the times while Mazinger retired early.
>>23959705
How much action did Tetsujin or Cyborg 009 see after their initial successes? There are alot of /m/ mainstays that see action long after their heydays. At the end of the day I suppose you can lay my confusion at the feet of chance.
>>
>>23959647
Gundam and Kamen Rider push product. That's how it gets funded and how it stays relevant. Bandai is always figuring out how to push more product. This creates a feedback loop of new product getting people to stay interested which justifies making more product. Toys, model kids, music, etc.

Mazinger product is very niche. Dynamic isn't deeply involved in product. It's hard to get Bandai or anyone else to invest because they know Z/Great/Kaiser will only sell so much and Dynamic isn't making new product that people are interested in. Imagine if the only Rider merch was Ichigo, Nigo, and V3. Only grampas would be interested. All Dynamic has ever done is "Mazinger Z, again, but with a little twist" and that's not going to move product.
>>
>>23959792
Your reasoning is sound but I'm left to wonder when they just gave up on him. Seems like sometime after the 1970's they just didnt bother pushing Z in the toylines anymore. Come the 90's and 2000's he saw more use but it was always these niche collector lines. I remember seeing the Fewture figure as a kid in a local comic shop and just drooling over it for the entire time we were there. In the years since then it's just been more of the same between companies like Yamaguchi, Super7, 3A toys, etc. Given the various reimaginings we've had over the years I just expected atleast one attempt to market the big lug towards kids again. The 2000's really wouod have been the perfect time to get him back in the spotlight given the 70's nostalgia wave but they just sort of kept things small scale with Mazinkaiser and the rest.
>>
>>23959774
>>23959647
> He's my favorite Nagai-bot and it seems like he's lowest on the totem pole now. Are the others just that much more popular? Did Nagai fail to keep Z and Koji alive in the wider zeitgeist?
>Nagai's other creations
Nagai is far more passionate about Devilman than Mazinger
>>
Mazinger as a concept just isn't set up like Gundam or Kamen Rider which can keep going on forever as new series after new series to push more toys and I don't think Nagai has any interset in that in the first place. Something like Gundam is a committee made product whereas Mazinger is more of a personal creation. It's not that black and white but that's the gist of it.
>>
>>23959805
>Your reasoning is sound but I'm left to wonder when they just gave up on him. Seems like sometime after the 1970's they just didnt bother pushing Z in the toylines anymore.
Because there were no shows. The situation with Toei having the rights but deciding to move to original mecha anime (before then mostly dropping mecha aside from rare shows here and there) then just sitting with those rights for years until they ran out, while also blocking other Mazinger anime, could have actually killed many other series.

And then years later when it was recovering you had Shin Mazinger's marketing and actual show not lining up at all and its second big chance was lost. Even Infinity's marketing wasn't as big as what Shin Mazinger was getting in tv commercials and such.

>Mazinger as a concept just isn't set up like Gundam or Kamen Rider which can keep going on forever as new series after new series to push more toys
It's more like the popularity of Mazinger is too bound up in the character of Kouji Kabuto
The failure of Great Mazinger to catch on strangled Mazinger's potential in the crib, and by the time SKL rolled around, it was the final nail in the coffin

It's not like they couldn't it's that no one would care if they did

Shin Mazinger is the perfect example of what happens when you give Imagawa too much freedom

Are we atleast getting a manga? I'll be happy if we can land that much. The Transformers crossover was alot of fun. I wish it had gotten an American release.
>>
>>23961749
Has there ever been a thread about SK knock off anime? The Taekwon V films certainly are an experience. It says alot about Mazinger's popularity in the 70's that everyone from rhe koreans to the argentines were rushing to offer their own off brand takes on the formula.
>>
>>23961780
The first Taekwon V feels like an honest attempt at Korea's own version of Mazinger that it's kind of sad how they devolved into literally head-swaps of other robot toys the CEO of their sponsor brought back from Japan.
>>
>>23961780
they get some chatter here and there
a lot are at least amusing to see what they're boosting from, like Space Black Knight with various capes, I think one of the He Man gals is in it too, Space Gundam V has Red Areemer from Ghouls And Ghosts, there's one I can never remember because VF ran it raw so the title was in hangul, but at one point it lifted the ending from Mars when the kid calls out to the robot
>>
>>23961778
Nah, Go Nagai is working on Chikyu Taisen.
>>
>>23959276
I disliked SKL because it's doesn't look as cool as it sounds. You'd think an edgy mazinkaiser with two getter manga reject pilot would be an awesome testosterone pumping 60 minutes action flick, but it's more like a filler episode from a long running show that doesn't exist.

Agreed, though even that initial film's pacing is jarring at times. I wish we saw more from that initial cast too. My biggest gripe with all those SK films is how little they do to develop their heroes. I suppose it's par for the course with how fly by night the productions must have been but the tiniest bit of character development would go a long way. Still, many of them provide so many crazy visuals there's always something worth dwelling on. I could talk your ear off about them if you let me.
>>23961794
Ironic you should mention Space Gundam V as the film led to some psuedo-fan art on my part. It's in the creative thread if you care to see it. The more shameless efforts always seem to bare the most entertaining fruit. It still surprises me that HG never tried localizing SGV considering their history in localizing other SK titles like Goldwing. Tangentiwlly related, Goldwing features a Inspector Zenigata lookalike who turns out to be a recolored Iron Man in a human skinsuit named "Marzak".

I learned about these while doing a deepdive on Italian Mazinger toys. DeAgostini's released a few varieties of these kits with their monthly magazine for years now it seems. Most recently they did the MMPR Megazord and before that Bayverse Prime. These models might honestly be the best Mazinger figures ever made.
>>
>>23970566
>trailer
what trailer? All we have is a title card, no actual footage
Which is worrisome, since evidently they're redoing things for the Y engine. I hope they find a way to just upscale most things, if they do, it'll be the first game in almost decade to have Boss and Sayaka playable
If everything's gonna be all new though, some stuff is probably gonna get cut

How come they didnt do anything for the 50th anniversary? Personally I'm just hoping for a classic Mazinger figure that sells for less than 50 bucks. Everything we get now is always upwards of 60 dollars, an original redesign, or both.

>>23971754
50th anniversary series was Mazinger ZEST/"Mazinger from Hell" manga with a Mazinger battle royale story, but that one kind of came and went without any impact.

Doesn't help it was an all new cast but for half of the manga basically all Mazingers were small variations of ZEST (which is just another take on a modernized Mazinger Z).

What're we're getting is an officially translated and remastered version of this game
https://akurasu.net/wiki/Super_Robot_Wars/Z2/

One of the most utterly stacked rosters I've ever seen a SRW game have and also Shin Mazinger's debut game. Of course Tetsuya isn't playable since Great Mazinger didn't appear in Shin Mazinger (outside of a silhouette) but I can hardly complain when the game does the plot from start to finish. Mazinger Z doesn't even get a Scrander until 40 stages in
>>
>>23971870
this mazinger is light in the pilder
this mazinger works at the other photonics lab
this mazinger is ZESTy

The truth is that I will never forgive Imagawa for fumbling Mazinger Z-hen. The show could have been truly great if he hadn't fallen into his worst habits as a storyteller and consequently robbing us of a Great-hen. Unforgivable.
>>
OP here, just finished God Mazinger.
It was fine, though really confusing. They changed God Mazinger's voice three times, and seemed really inconsistent on whether the dinosaurs were magically summoned or were robots. The tech level was all over the place, and very few of the characters were interesting at all. Felt like Eld was upstaged in coolness by Dorado (who was a demon or alien, I guess?) really hard.
