-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-=GIRLPLA GROUPBUILD=-

Build a kit featuring any brand of Girlpla, including but not limited to:
>Frame Arms Girl
>Megami Device
>30 Minute Sisters/Missions/Etc.
>Figure-Rise Standard
>Megalomaria
Additionally, any "Feminine" mechs like the Nobel Gundam or Valsione are fair game as well. What you do with your build in terms of theming is up to you so long as your base is "Feminine".

Send a description along with both WIP and Finished images of your build to gunplaplamo@gmail.com

That's not true at all. You can get an entire kit with the compressor for like $125 on Amazon and it will work.

If you consider you buy one can of spray paint for like 8? It really saves you a ton of money.

The major downside I think with airbrushing is learning how not to get color bleed or beading.

>>
>>23963893
Bandai is overall weird in its approach towards non-Japanese markets. Apparently they tend to ignore shops requests and add to each shipment whatever THEY think it should sell.

Idolmaster is big thing in Japan but to typical western guy, these are the same kits all over, just with different faces and haircut and with extra price tag slapped. No wonder they are not popular. How much versions of essentially same kit you can buy? Or assemble?
>>
>>23963893
I think it's mainly them finishing what they started with the Shiny Colors branch, and the rest being kits released for the 20th Anniversary of the franchise. The stock is probably due to the last two years being for said anniversary. I feel like they'll be done or slow down a lot once the SC girls are done. They aren't even doing the SideM guy to complete the All Branches kits.

I still hope for a Hibiki one day.

thanks for reading my blogpost
>>
>>23963902
A few popular idols sold pretty well, but majority of them become shelf warmer with frequent discounts. It really boils down to the same reason anon said, people got bored of assemble the same kit over and over, only a few hardcore fans would want to collect all of them.
>>
>>23963954
enjoy it while you can cus MG X-1 is not a banger of a kit at all
>>
>>23963954
pro tip: try looking into third party hands for the full cloth
>>
>>23963483
I have the Zeon Samson trailer in my backlog but that was... expensive. I would like the Gundam transporter also but that is to boring a model to spend that much money, so I can live with the 30mm one. Get a base jobber when there is a sale or not even kidding, safe a Tikbalang from shelf rotting. They are neat little kits, I got one for €10,- at last year's black Friday.
>>
>>23964055
Different anon, but are there even any that would fit it? It's a Late UC kit, but the research I've done indicates that third-party 1/144 hands are still smaller than Late UC hands.
>>
>>23962331
the chinks bootlegged the MGEX didn't they?
>>
>>23962248
This is why you buy from a reseller that gets their merch shipped in bulk. Buying straight from china means the manufacturer will just send the package in a black bag and hope for the best.
>>
>>23964089
there a variety of sizes, usually 1/100 and 1/144 hands come with two or three different sizes of hand for small/medium/large designs
nta and I haven't placed the hands on mine but it is a good recommendation. the normal hands suck donkey dicks.
>>
>>23963816
Oh well that ain't too bad
>>23963893
They're either out of stock or shelfwarm over here, I couldn't really tell you what the fuck's going on here in the west, apart from the fact that girlpla routinely goes on sale in Japan whereas the western price bloated by shipping+profit+etc usually just stays as-is

>price was the same as the basic base jabber but went up
Are they clogging up the shelves that badly? You almost won me over with the notion of saving them from misery, but I'm not a fan of the recent price increases. But I'll tell you what, I'll get one the next time I see it for $15 CAD irl or when I'm making an order, fun little plane

Thanks, friend. My dream is to have a series of shelves, one for each era of Zeon and fed suits, peppered with other mecha and unique little oddities like Agg, all tied together with the mono-eye motif.

>>23964201
https://www.dalong.net/reviews/old/old_cata_e.htm

If you wanna build an Agg or Agguguy, you gotta go back to the early 80s.

>>23964248
I changed the Gunperry's colors to more closely resemble the GM, Ball, and other Federation mecha. The green and yellow just didn't feel right to me.

Although I quickly learned just how much visual identity you can lose when you've got a shelf full of kits with the exact same colors. So I try to keep my other Feddy kits closer to the original colors.

What I did is nothing compared to what some other builders have been able to do with those hunks of junk. They're basically blank canvases for builders to showcase their true skill.

Haven't put together a kit in over a decade. Last time I was using nail clippers or just pulling the parts off, tried to be more considerate this time and sand away all the nubs. I do wanna at least panel line and top coat it, but I have some questions. I've read that panel lining on bare plastic after assembly can lead to problems, so should I do two coats, with panel lining in between them? Is it recommended to panel line the sections where the parts meet, like the calves and forearm plates? Will the top coat cover the mold line in the blue of the torso? And is it worth investing in a more expensive set of nippers if I'm sanding nubs flush anyway?

The PGU line was a mistake, just like the unkopla.

all it did was add unnecessary greebles, make the Nu Gundam can't support the funnels on its own and needed support because the new unneeded details added to the funnels made it too heavy.

if Bandai makes a PGU Wing Zero EW, Bandai will make so that Wing Zero can't support the feathered wings

Bandai acheived PG perfection with Exia and they should have gone in that direction instead of PGU
>>
>>23965322
It's not that the PGU line is a mistake. The RX-78-2 is a perfectly reasonable kit if you don't mind the design. It's also not priced unreasonably.
It's just that the Nu is an overpriced hunk of questionable garbage.
>>
>>23965322
God I want them to make the PGU Sazabi and price it at 100k yen.
>>
>>23964557
I already did. And judging by how often Delpi's waterslides kept selling out, a lot of other people did too.

>>23965322
>the Nu Gundam can't support the funnels on its own
You can blame Tomino and Izubuchi for that. It's unreasonable to expect an IRL toy to support the Fin Funnel arrangement in the lineart, because it's fucking stupid and impractical to stack them up like that. Why the fuck do you think they had to design the Nu-FF and use that for the life-size statue instead of the classic Nu?
>>
The PGU line shouldn't have gone past the RX78. Yeah, it looked a bit messy but it didn't really matter because there already was a more standard looking PG RX78.

It's a line that should've been reserved for PG 2.0s or something, not something brand new like the PG Nu.
>>
>RX78

ew I will never understand the obsession for this dogshit design.
>>
PG should focus on internal mechanical structure instead of greebles (external & internal).
PG Zeta is the best in that respect.
PGU Nu's inner frame is so bloated with SHINY COSMETICS AND GIMMICKS instead of working mechanical stuff.

the old 1/100 kit, the MG Nu, and MG Nu ver Ka can do it just fine ( Nu ver Ka's problem is the shitty connectors to connect each funnel)

the PGU Nu's funnels weigh 450grams, half of the Nu Gundam which is around 980 grams. the weight alone makes it hard for the Nu to support it.
>>
>>23965373
Unironically likely to get a SEED PGU. That AU carried this franchise financially for like a decade plus, and Bandai knows it.

I just don't get Bandai decision. They making less MG kits because it's too big for small Japanese home space and cost too much because of the many runners but it's okay for them to made a much bigger kit than most MG kits with more runners. Plus PG Nu is slight bigger than PG Unicorn Gundam

China buys bootlegs, not the genuine products. So the popularity of the franchise in China ultimately does not line Bandai's pockets as much as you would like to believe.
>>
>>23965389
the whole "costs too much" excuse is bs since Bamco is a lot larger of a company than they were back when they were pumping out the MG kits. Then you have all of the bizarre ideas they've tried like the Shitpla, the $800 PGU Nu, P-Bandai only drip feed, and the bionicle gunpla stuff.

They could do MG kits, and it would probably make them some money, but it won't make them as much money as they will with HG, RG, and P-Bandai price gouging. So they're going with those over MG because number must go up and increasingly so each year.
>>

they're not making MGs for 2 reasons:

1) Running out of characters that will sell without the FOMO P-Bandai hype (so has to be main character Gundam or new version of existing one)
2) HG/RG occupy less time on the machines to print and are easier to design multiple new releases to flip inventory quickly for stores

Quick snap in-between painting project. extra stuff like WSD later. My 3rd chinese kino and my first SNAA, one of the most prestigious CN plamo brands. never got one before since I disliked its core design theme, except for this Percival. This should be the "1/144 RG" line, but it's as big as MG Wing series. (17 cm w/o stand).

(+) Inner Frame mechanical design, more detailed than even Bandai's modern MG. going back to Adv MS Joint (one of my future project) after having experienced this would suck!
(+) color/parts separation
(+) Very tight snapfit. there's no chance for parts to fall off when articulating
(+) WSD + action base included. typical chinese bonuses

(-) runner gates are huge and just as thick as actual parts. I had to triple snip everything since it's mostly undergated. It's very annoying to clean and I had to do it since tiny leftover nub would mess with the snapfit of this already very tight kit.
(-) very tight snapfit means very difficult to disassemble, if you're into painting. but chinese kits are typically designed to look great OOB, so this isn't really a problem.
(-) a bunch of extremely pointy edges. I understand japanese safety regulation now.
(-) equipping weapon is annoying, you can't just slide the sword handle in
(-) the twin glaives can't be equipped on the action base ring. the 3D rendered box art lied.

It's far from perfect, but I'm quite satisfied with the overall build. I was interested in YR-series Nether Emperor too, but lost interest as soon as I found out it's 23cm tall. TOO BIG!

/blog
>>
>>23965803
Not really, they only have slightly more parts than your typical HG and increase in parts mostly apply to more and more additional accessories, weapons and armor.

What do makes Koto kits in particular more problematic is how tight their plastic is. This problem was largely mitigated by newer molds and most modern and new models have good fit out of box with only minimal corrections required but older ones were infamous for joints breaking. It was not uncommon to have people report joints break solely from test fitting. So if you happen to try to build some early Gourai, Stylet, Hres or Innocentia, you do need to test fit every joint and be prepared to sand them gently if they put noticeable resistance to movement. If it's one of latest models, they are usually fine as they are. But 30MS suffered from same problem (first generation of Sisters had stiff and breaking neck problems and my Rishetta cannot rotate her torso without risking breaking it).
>>
>>23965810
Two glass cabinets (or rather normal cabinets but with glass on front). Unfortunately started to run out of space again and don't really know what to do with that problem.
>>
>>23965376
The real problem is that Bandai is incompetent and too lazy to implement ratcheting joint systems. Hasblow for all their faults actually knows this. They've had general retail figgers that are bigger, heavier, with backpacks that are about as big as PGU Nu's upper body, that can still comfortably hold poses because they had enough braincells to know that big hefty ratchets are the way to go when you get any larger than a foot.
Fuck, they've even used POM before in previous PGs. There was just no attempt here to make Nu actually rigid because they knew they could slap a stand on it and watch everyone jerk off to le surface detail.

#1 is bullshit since part of the reason the bootleg market is booming right now is because their making kits fans have wanted for years, but Bandai just dgaf, like the Daban MG Jagd Dogas, Solomon GP02, Kyshatria, the Thunderbolt Acguy, and there’s probably more. The creator of Thunderbolt was even confused and embarrassed that China made the Acguy before Bandai did and wondered wtf Bandai was doing. You’re right on #2 though.

Also as others pointed out, despite all of Bandai’s innovations, they’re really stupid when it comes to larger kit structural integrity. They absolutely avoid ratchet notch joints when it should absolutely have been used.

Finished

A for effort/general design

B- for overall engineering and casting/molding

it says 120 but the "canon" places III as bridge between regelgu- Sazabi, I say the kit being the size of 144 Sazabi is ok.

Nothing seriously wrong but the're a lot of minor issues. If people want to know what they are to avoid them do let me know.

The biggest issue is that I don't know getting the full package is worth it. I'm not talking about money here as the regular and the full version are not that different in prices. But the display stand is just too big and pointless too. You cannot even place the feet within the inner circle properly. And I really don't know who have to space to have the arms extended.

As for regulegu shoulder, they are fine as extra but one of the maintenance door don't actually close properly. It's like a few micrometers off on the side and got pushed out from the socket. Some double-sided tapes can lock it down but this should not happen in the first place considering every other doors are good.
Having all the pieces in one picture does make me feel that maybe they should have just version- keep the extra shoulder and dump the displace stand.

Also all the circular knob parts are molded in the same direction so the knobs on the elbows and the backpack are actual opposite in where they are pointing at once assembled. Seeing some of the Chinese early copy reviews, I'm pretty sure stuff like this were expressed to the manufacturer. they did not make any changes- probably due to time and cast being made already. Which is also strange considering during computer drafting you would think errors like this would be picked up rather early considering the efforts on everything else.

Overall I would recommended it if you like the look and don't know mind some fiddling during build.

I would say if they did not go with the pseudo RG look and went for a more streamlined HG style, the ending product should be better than what we got.

Anyone know of some connector pieces like pic related circled in red? Just standard L shape connectors with a hole and a plug. I think Bandai used to make some back when they gave a crap about the consumer.

This is from the Minelayer Messer. I don't get why they didn't include those pieces in the F-01 Type since it's the range of motion the Messer's back skirt had in the first movie. Like, why?
>>
>>23966315
I use Tamiya but both are acrylic. I do 1:1, sometimes a little more thinner if I want the topcoat bottle to last a little longer. Use around 12psi and do two passes. Works on my machine.

>>23966349
skirts plug into polycaps most of the time
just change the peg or change the polycap
>>
>>23966351
well, which polycaps would snap onto the Aile Strike's waist and allow the Strike Noir's pistol skirts to plug into them?
>>
>>23966306
If the side skirts use a 3mm peg, I would grab one of Bandai or Koto's joint sets and drill some holes.
>>
>>23966355
so those use the little clip things and end with a peg
just take that part and drill a hole in the skirt to match the clip's peg
if there's not enough thickness in the side skirt then cut the peg down a bit and just glue it directly on
with cement and a hobby knife you can make this happen it just takes thinking about the parts you have

I regret to inform you that if you can get over the proportions, MGSD is actually a really fun build with tons of neat detail stuffed into a small package.
>>
>>23964599
For pencils, you can put it bare and use an eraser to tidy up the lines. If you’re using tamiya panel liner which has enamel thinner inside, any pooling or unevaporated liner risks cracking the plastic, so it’s recommended to line before assembly (bare is fine, careful on small parts). However, if after assembly, gloss topcoat to protect, panel line, and then you can topcoat with gloss, semi-gloss, or matte of your choice. For the areas like calves, there’s no crevices for the ink to fill so you have to scribe, unless you use a pencil instead.

A more expensive nipper can make the cut cleaner and reduce the sanding work. If it’s a shitty nipper that crushes plastic, cutting too close can stress the inside plastic and cause unremovable white marks that normal sanding can’t remove since it’s too deep (needs painting or cement to cover up). More pricy nippers tend to be single-bladed which cut the piece rather than double-bladed pushing together, and you can cut flush with minimal residue and part stressing
>>
>>23966623
My only issue with MGSD is that they're yet to make a suit I actually care about
>>
>>23966623
i'm really excited for the Kshatriya, the SD proportions on it don't look TOO crazy off

how are single blade nippers more expensive when it's cheaper to make because you have to sharpen only one blade

>>
>>23966628
Same. Personally, what I want from the MGSD line is SD gundam designs given the premium treatment. The MG musha gundam for example has an inner frame; just take that and return it to SD proportions and I'd be all over it. Give me a Command Gundam, or a Captain Gundam, or an elaborate King Gundam II. I guess, for me, the appeal of SD was never in seeing regular suits in SD proportions. I like the SD line's original designs.

i can't speak for US as im EU but i use it if i know i'm going to get multiple things shipped altogether. if you're buying one kit sure you might get it cheaper but the shipping will make it probably cost the same, if not more, then if you bought it on ebay or whatever
i have the GQ Hambrabi coming which i got for 2,600 JPY ($16.50) but then shipping was 6,040 JPY ($38.50) and by the looks of it i could've got it for $50 or so basically the same
but in that i have some other stuff im interested in so i've saved on shipping overall

30mf feels like most of the population got turned into strange organic robots or something considering the rotting robot head in one of the scenary pieces

Dunno if I'm going to get my groupbuild finished. Going in for surgery on Wednesday so I've basically got tonight to finish it for tomorrow's photoshoot.
Should have had time but cunt boss kept dragging me into work all last week despite me being on medical leave.
Dragged me in today on the pretense of one short job and I ended up not getting in till gone 6. Paints decided to shade me. Lights fading. I dunno if I can finish her, I might just toss the kit at this rate.
Sorry for blog posting, had to vent.

Shit annoys the shit out of me. He should at least panel line them like dalong so that you can see where the detail is. It's not like Bandai is dropping a new kit each week. He has time.

I think you should glue some extra stuff to the arms to increase the bulk. A basic kitbash can only go so far, you need to think out of the box sometimes.

>/gpg/ talks shit about mechagaikotsu painting his nails but not his snapgods
Most people here are annoyed by his bad influence on the hobby because he gives people the wrong idea of what scale modeling is. His painted nail is just an allusion to the main problem. Gaikotsu is IGN of plamo, alot of professional editing and presentation but the reviewer's performance is just too sloppy to be taken seriously.
>>
>>23968243
>gives people the wrong idea of what scale modeling is
What is that wrong idea, and what is it supposed to be?
>>
>>23968276
In his reviews, the best kit is whatever is most like an action figure. Articulation and durability are weighed too heavily in comparison to aesthetics
>>
Next Hobby Next Phase when?
Surely they'll finally announce the RG X there.
>>
>>23968292
I think these are valid things to critique and you're in denial if you act like gunpla is not trying to achieve these things.
It is not super high detail, billion part, hand-drilling, cement-requiring display piece modeling like military and motor/aviation stuff. These are extremely easy to build kits that become articulated figures, oftentimes with better ranges than a lot of actual action figure lines of their time of release.
Yeah, you can use modeling skills to make a shit kit better, but it's still a shit kit at a baseline.
>>
>>23965888
bro the majority of the bootlegs out there are still just different versions of the same suits bandai is making Nu/Hi Nu/Exia/Astray/strike freedom etc. There's 3 different Chinese 1/100 Hi Nu's coming out in the next few months for god's sake.

So you are just poor? There are Gunpla kits out there for €25,- and less. Printing is not free you know and what you safe in money you'll more than make up in hassle and frustration. If you do resin (Wich you want for Gunpla) you don't Really need a wash and cure machine bit you do need IPA alcohol each time and some setup with some uv lights to cure.

why do snapshitters paint their nails but not their kits? curious.

it's the same reason behind the "gunpla collectors wear tattered underwear" stereotype; it's all about priorities.
